Flynn lost a lot of sympathy in the fanbase once they checked out the ExpandedUniverse; he is something of a jerk to his friends and family, taking their devotion for granted, lies to everyone (including his wife!) about what he's up to, blows off multiple warnings about The Grid's instability, the Program/Iso tensions, Clu's ambition, etc. His only appearance in ''WesternAnimation/TronUprising'' being something of a [[JerkassGod Jackass User]] and not healing [[WesternAnimation/TronUprising Dyson]] ([[MistreatmentInducedBetrayal which caused Dyson to be one of Clu's lieutenants during the coup]]). ** Another one, however unintended, Programs are a SlaveRace to humanity, [[HappinessInSlavery even if it's presented as something mutually beneficial]], it's still a nasty bit of FridgeHorror.

** The right thing to do is to let your elders dictate ''every'' aspect of your future, even if it means shoving you into a figurehead position in a Fiction500 company as a proxy for your father. It is also the right thing to carry on and maintain the heroic image of a man for the sake of the public, even if he was ''incredibly'' flawed behind the scenes.

* UnfortunateImplications: Of the FamilyUnfriendlyAesop variety, possibly unintended.
** Creating an open and free system that is accessible to everyone isn't always a good thing, because all entities are not created equal, and some entities, when given infinite rights and access, will use them to force their will upon others, and remove their infinite rights and access. Sometimes proprietary is the way to go.
** If things get bad enough for a large group of people, it won't matter how much good you have done or how well-intentioned you were. The people ''will'' turn on you and support a demagogue instead.

a Family Unfriendly Aesop must be intentional. If the work gives unintentional bad messages, try Warp That Aesop

* BaseBreaker: Kevin Flynn's moral compass or possible lack thereof is a hot topic of debate, depending on what fan board you head to. Tron Sector's fanbase is more inclined to see him as a well-intentioned, benevolent figure unjustly exiled and imprisoned. Fans on Tumblr's Tron section lean more toward a darker view, to the point of arguing he was a high-functioning sociopath enamored of virtual godhood. As ''Legacy'' was written by [[{{Series/LOST}} Adam Horowitz]] and [[{{Series/OnceUponATime}} Edward Kitiss]], [[GrayAndGrayMorality any interpetation on the spectrum is possible]].

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: ''Every'' "pure" AI character wants to kill the heroes in a painful and messy fashion. ExpandedUniverse material points to plenty of self-serving spin in Flynn's official story. 2/3 of the named characters are dead or de-rezzed, most of the other third have dim survival odds, probably wish they were dead, or both. The Grid is a WretchedHive. It's arguable that OnlyTheLeadsGetAHappyEnding, but even that is under debate as Sam trudges off to a corporate job where it's clear that everyone sees him as a proxy for his father and Quorra has no analog world skills or identity. This lead to a backlash on {{Tumblr}} when Kosinski said that the planned sequel would go even ''more'' DarkerAndEdgier.
