** The subplot about [[spoiler: Yuri taking the law into his own hands by murdering people, even though they're people who deserve it]] seems to fade about two-thirds of the way into the game without ever being concretely resolved. The game largely drops it after [[spoiler:Estelle is saved from Alexei]], and Yuri never has to truly worry about it again. The seeming resolution to this plot comes in the form of him and Flynn dueling and settling their differences, which comes across as less a resolution of the plotline, but instead them just reaffirming their friendship.

** [[spoiler: Yuri getting stabbed and lost at sea at the end of the second act]] is a great way to cap off a tense WhamEpisode. But [[spoiler: he recovers with no major setbacks, the party is soon reunited,]] and we're back to business as usual. Aside from some dialogue later between Yuri and Sodia, the incident leaves little impact on the story. * AmericansHateTingle: Patty is generally a popular character in Japan due to her fun gameplay quirks, her cute design, and the nature of how she is integrated into the story. In the West, she's much more polarizing. The reason for this is largely attributed to the NoExportForYou nature of the [=PS3=] version, meaning she ended up becoming the face for many who were unhappy about the lack of release until several years later. Ignoring that, her personality and role in the story is seen more negatively compared to Japan.

** Yuri's vigilantism is '''not''' something you're supposed to think is factually correct all the time. Yes, he punishes ''really'' evil people, but ''he might end up JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope'' and it alienates him from his friends, as well. He even realizes that it's best to let the law punish people, and is fully aware that meting out vigilante justice is less than moral. Yuri needs someone like Flynn to rein him in at times.
** Likewise, Flynn's always-lawful approach isn't automatically the best, either. Yes, he has a point about Yuri JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope, but TheEmpire's laws have repeatedly proven ineffective at protecting countless innocent people from the very {{Asshole Victim}}s Yuri targets. By following his orders all the time, Flynn can potentially be party to less than moral actions, like the Empire's seizing the apatheia. Like Yuri, Flynn's approach needs a counter balance to it, or else he risks becoming a KnightTemplar like the BigBad.

* HighTierScrappy: Rita is widely considered to be [[GameBreaker one of the most broken/OP characters]] in the entire Tales series to date, due to her ability to speed cast high-level spells during Overlimit and [[PersonOfMassDestruction singlehandedly wipe out entire fields of enemies]] in an instant. She's still a force to reckon with even without Overlimit, since her Resilience support skill prevents the enemy from staggering her as long as she's casting a spell and her Levitation ability keeps her safely out of reach of most enemies. ''The Definitive Edition'' gives her the Perfect Magic support skill[[note]]It makes Rita immune to all enemy spells, though it depletes her TP for each spell's duration[[/note]] and "Indignation" (the Tales Of series' most powerful spell) as her second Mystic Arte. Put simply: Rita is like having an SNKBoss at your party's disposal.

* TierInducedScrappy: A ''very'' subjective example in that all party members are unique and fill different roles in battle.
** Low Tier:
*** Karol is often seen as a low tier party member due to being [[MightyGlacier strong, but very slow in both attack and movement]]. His AI is actually rather competent, he has good HP and defense, and is something of a JackOfAllTrades in terms of his skill and what he brings to the table, but he is a rather unpopular pick for players who would rather use someone much faster like Repede or Judith. This stems from how combo-heavy the game is; Yuri, Flynn, Judith, and Repede are able to do fast and strong combos, while Karol is left with slow Artes that are poor in combo potential. The best thing going for him is his utility, but Raven and Flynn simply outperform him in utility.
** High Tier:
*** Rita is widely considered to be [[GameBreaker one of the most broken/OP characters]] in the entire Tales series to date, due to her ability to speed cast high-level spells during Overlimit and [[PersonOfMassDestruction singlehandedly wipe out entire fields of enemies]] in an instant.
*** Raven. Having characters who are ranged and ''stay ranged'' (as opposed to Estelle) or are effective at hit-and-runs are a very valuable asset. Raven is also one of the three (or [[MagicKnight four]], depending on the version) characters with an ability that can heal the party as well — Yuri and Karol can only heal a small area around them with Guardian Field and Nice Aid Smash respectively (though Nice Aid Smash is a good alternative to healing the entire party outside of combat), so Raven's healing from anywhere on the field makes him quite versatile.
*** Flynn is one of the most powerful knights in-story. And in gameplay, he [[GameplayAndStoryIntegration plays this role way too well]] due to how many of his artes have wide range, high damage, and ''very'' fast animations. The game is one of the [[SequelDifficultySpike harder]] games in the series - and some players think Flynn makes the game too easy. He balances this out by [[GuestStarPartyMember only being available some of the time in the Definitive Edition]], but once he permanently joins late in the story, chances are good that he's going to stay in your party.
*** Yuri is by ''far'' the best physical attacker in the game thanks to his ability to combo enemies into oblivion all thanks to his skills while also being able to achieve the different Overlimits through those combos alone. He is also the only playable character who can get the Glory skill, which helps him continue his combos without interruption and helps with his survivability. His only downside is his lack of crowd control, but this can be circumvented by setting his burst arte to [[AreaOfEffect Divine Wolf Flood]].
** Both:
*** Judith's gimmick is juggling enemies in the air or attacking from the air - which the AI just ''can'' not handle in ''any'' way. Unfortunately this goes both ways - since ''her'' AI usually can't do this, and will instead try to have her dash around or keep combos going. She's amazing [[DifficultButAwesome if a player can pull it off]], but it's going to take a lot of trial and error to do that.
*** Patty uses a StanceSystem but also requires a bit of luck. She's very DifficultButAwesome - if the game treats you well then you'll rip through things ''very'' fast. If it doesn't, you'll end up slowing things down. The AI can kind of handle her decently, but it requires some luck.
*** Repede is simply just OvershadowedByAwesome. While he can also juggle enemies, Judith can handle it better (His AI just ''will not'' do it) but he will be best played as a flanker unless a player can pull off a DifficultButAwesome move that abuses invincibility frames. (The AI does not do this) He simply just is a hard pick to put in the party when you can put in Flynn, Raven, or Rita instead.

* PortingDisaster: When it first released, the ''Definitive Edition'' version was this for all consoles, being marred by run-on sentences, typos, grammatical mistakes, and the newly localized lines also having inconsistent writing compared to the polished dialogue of the original. But worst of all, the newly dubbed dialogue and extra skits (with Yuri having a [[Creator/GrantGeorge new English VA]] voicing all the extra dialogue) have inconsistent sound quality. Except for Patty’s audio (mostly), the new audio is either too low in volume, or too high, which distorts the audio due to the inconsistency (mostly evident at Ghasfarost). It had game-breaking bugs and glitches that ''were not present in either the [=PS3=] or Xbox 360 editions,'' like shutting down at random times.
** Thankfully, Bandai Namco released an update (version 1.0.2), rectifying most of the most annoying problems regarding glitches, but some of the typos and the occasionally inconsistent sound quality still remain.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: The [=PS3=] version and ''The Empty Mask'' manga fixes many issues with the original game:
** Flynn being playable first and foremost. A common complaint with the 360 version was that despite Flynn having a large role in the story (and arguably being more important than some of the party members), he is only playable for one battle. The [=PS3=] version however upgrades him to full-time status.
** One of the most infamous parts of the 360 version was the lengthy segment where the party loses Estelle and Raven leaving them without a reliable healer (Karol and Yuri have healing artes, but they only affect a small area around them and don't heal very much HP). In the [=PS3=] version, however, Flynn joins the party during this segment which helps since he has "First Aid" as a healing Arte, and Patty should have her own healing artes by this point in the game.
** The fact that, after 10 years of [[NoExportForYou hoping and wishing]], the [=PS3=] version finally got a release to western gamers on all consoles (including [[UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch the Switch]]), as ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6juT0GEGpnE "The Definitive Edition"]]''.
** With the ''Definitive Edition'', it only has two, free, pieces of additional DownloadableContent. One is a fast unlock for the GuideDangIt costumes, the other... is the slew of bonus items released instead of the costumes with the XBOX 360 version, ensuring ''all'' the content is in the game, even that which would break the game.
** After a lot of players complained about a ''lot'' of issues with ''Definitive Edition'', especially a bug where the game could crash ''anytime'' (everything mentioned in the PortingDisaster section), Bandai Namco released a patch (1.0.2) pretty much fixing the majority, if not 90% of what people have complained about.
** ''The Empty Mask'' adds much needed characterization for Alexei, whose status as a FallenHero comes off as an afterthought in the main game. The manga also makes Raven's motive for betraying the party more believable and sympathetic, showing how the horrors of the Great War and later Don's death broke his will to make his own decisions.

* AmericansHateTingle: Patty is generally a popular character in Japan due to her fun gameplay quirks, her cute design, and the nature of how she is integrated into the story. In the west she's much more polarizing, and a good number of fans dislike her. The reason for this is largely attributed to the NoExportForYou nature of the [=PS3=] version, meaning she ended up becoming the face for many who were unhappy about the lack of release until several years later. Ignoring that, her personality and role in the story is seen more negatively compared to Japan.

** A significant portion of the game is spent on the debate over whether [[spoiler:Estelle]] will have to die for the sake of the world. Of course, if [[spoiler:Estelle]] died, the party
would ''really'' lose [[spoiler:its primary healer]], so it's hard to believe that the character will be killed off.
** Just after defeating DiscOneFinalBoss [[spoiler:Alexei]], [[spoiler:Yuri, the protagonist]] is stabbed and falls hundreds if not thousands of feet into the ocean... and survives. The outcome isn't especially surprising, since the game wasn't about to
kill the party's off [[spoiler:the main healer, Estelle. And later the protagonist, Yuri, before the third act.]]character]] in such an anticlimactic way.

** One of the most infamous parts of the 360 version was the lengthy segment where the party loses Estelle and Raven leaving them without a reliable healer (Karol and Yuri have healing artes, but they only affect a small area around them and don't heal very much HP, making them nowhere near as proficient as Estelle's or Raven's). In the [=PS3=] version, however, Flynn joins the party during this segment which helps since he has "First Aid" as a healing Arte, and Patty should have her own healing artes by this point in the game.

Yuri's Guardian Field can heal others around him, it's just that the aoe is small.

*** Karol is often seen as a low tier party member due to being [[MightyGlacier strong, but very slow in both attack and movement]]. His AI is actually rather competent, he has good HP and defense, and is something of a JackOfAllTrades in terms of his skill and what he rings to the table, but he is a rather unpopular pick for players who would rather use someone much faster like Repede or Judith. This stems from how combo-heavy the game is; Yuri, Flynn, Judith, and Repede are able to do fast and strong combos, while Karol is left with slow Artes that are poor in combo potential. The best thing going for him is his utility, but Raven and Flynn simply outperform him in utility.

I've seen plenty of Vesperia fans either hate or love Zagi.

Added DiffLines:

** Zagi. Some fans love him for his insane personality and crazed obsession with beating Yuri on top of being the most recurring boss in the game while others loathe him for those same reasons, feeling annoyed by how recurring Zagi is despite having little relevance to the overall story and how one note his personality is.

Removing as saying all of the cast are BBC is not really a valid use of it. Its for individual characters, which some are mentioned below the entry already.

** The party as a collective is somewhat polarizing as well. In contrast to the casts of, say, ''[[VideoGame/TalesOfTheAbyss Abyss]]'' and ''[[VideoGame/TalesOfBerseria Berseria]]'', many of the main characters don't have particularly significant relationships with each other even by the end of the game. They're constantly on the verge of splitting up during the first act and one may feel as if they're being forced together for arbitrary reasons (Patty, a new character in the ''Definitive Edition'' who pretty much had to be inserted into the old plot, is [[TagalongKid hit with this particularly hard]]). Others think the individual strengths of some of the characters (Yuri constantly tops popularity polls) make up for these criticisms, or don't agree with them to begin with.

Alexei was cut.

* CompleteMonster:
** The English version [[AdaptationalVillainy removes the positive qualities]] of [[BigBad Alexei Dinoia]], the [[InsaneAdmiral Commandant of the Imperial Knights]] who betrays his [[Characters/TalesOfVesperiaEmpire Empire]] in an attempt to TakeOverTheWorld. To accomplish this, Alexei orchestrates a [[FinalSolution genocide of the Entelexeia]], the race that protects the world, so he can harvest the powerful apatheia from their corpses. Two of his minions are forced to obey him because he will shut off their artificial hearts at the first sign of defiance. He [[MindRape tortures]] Estelle, a member of the royal family he was sworn to serve, to force her to use her powers to activate Zaude, an ancient superweapon. Using Estelle for this purpose floods Zaphias, the capital city of the Empire, with deadly aer and vicious monsters. In the [[{{UsefulNotes/PlayStation3}} PS3]] and ''Definitive Edition'' versions, we also learn Alexei's directly responsible for the Black Hope Massacre, using the people on the Black Hope as his guinea pigs while he was experimenting to create a replica of Dein Nomos. It went wrong, turning the people on the ship into mindless monsters. When it turned out Aifread survived, Alexei then started the rumor that Aifread was the one responsible for it, using Siren's Fang's leader as the perfect scapegoat while hiding his part in the whole ordeal.
** [[AristocratsAreEvil Alexander Cumore]], a captain of the Imperial Knights, is from a noble family and considers peasants to be completely beneath him. When he is placed in charge of the town of Heliord, he tricks peasants into volunteering for brutal labor with the promise of making them nobles. Cumore has no authority to ennoble people and he knows it. The labor these peasants undergo is so brutal that many of them die of exhaustion. Later, Cumore is sent to govern an oasis town to find a monster that lives in the desert. While in this position, he forces the peasants in the town to go into the desert to find the monster, knowing that this will likely kill them.
** [[AristocratsAreEvil Ragou]] is the corrupt magistrate of Nor Harbor. Nor Harbor has been experiencing storms, making it hard for the people there to make a living off of the port commerce. To make things worse, Ragou harshly taxes his people. If someone cannot afford his taxes, Ragou sends his mercenaries to take their loved ones--including children--as collateral. He keeps these loved ones in a basement full of monsters. When the heroes confront him over this, he explains that [[ForTheEvulz he finds people getting eaten by monsters to be entertaining]]. Ragou offers only one hope to his people: If they kill a vicious monster and bring back its horn as proof, they will never have to pay taxes again. Of course, this monster would make short work of most people who try to fight it. The heroes eventually discover that the storms around Nor Harbor are created by [[AppliedPhlebotinum a special Blastia]] in Ragou's mansion, showing that he orchestrated the suffering of his people for his own amusement.

His only downside is his lack of crowd control artes, but this can be circumvented by setting his burst arte to [[AreaOfEffect Divine Wolf Flood]].
