** Redemption Island was rescued from the scrappy heap of seasons when [[TheWesley Russell Hantz]] was ''finally'' eliminated pre-merge before the producers could forget the other 16 players existed. YourMileageMayVary though - most otehrs would have preferred to see Rob go next because the producers seem to have forgotten his tribe has people who aren't him or Phillip. (Grant? Who's that? Ashley ''who''?)

*** And now, producers have seemed to have forgotten about Grant, Natalie, Ashley, and Andrea, and have put him on almost ''every'' "Player of the week" award candidate...even when Rob's "Strategy" was merely "finding the clue" or "talking to Phillip". As someone on a board put it, "Boston Rob could take a dump while the rest of his tribe engineered a blindside, and he would ''still'' be nominated for 'Player of the week' by Sprint."

** In ''Nicaragua'', Jane was already feeling like she was the odd-man out of her alliance with Sash, Chase, and Holly. Already things weren't going well merely because there were ''four'' and there could only be ''three'' of them. So when Chase brings Sash and Holly along to an immunity...not a good idea. Unfortunately, their target Fabio wins immunity. So you have to vote someone else...why not the other person Dan? Nope...guess you gotta blindside Jane. Unfortunately they practically told Jane ''to her face'' that they were going to vote her out, and at the same time exposed their ''entire alliance'' to Fabio and Dan. ''WHOOPS''. Suffice to say, Chase and Sash more or less ''had'' to bring Holly with them to the final three if they didn't want a very ugly attempt on Jane's side to turn the Jury towards Dan or Fabio if they made it to the final three. (However, Jane actually voted for Chase)

** The Final Three. Jeff Probst likes that rule better because normally people would intentionally bring someone with them to the final two who was TheLoad and dislikable so they could say almost ''anything'' to the jury or just play the lesser of two evils card. However plenty of the fans hate it partly ''because'' they liked seeing someone bring TheLoad to the final two or because it's more traditional. Not to mention; only once have all three contestants actually received at least one vote in the final three. (''China'', where the votes were 1-2-4.) The other times, it was really in between two contestants anyways. There's also a ''slight'' chance that, with a Jury of nine and final three that there can be a three way tie but the Jury's often united enough to give someone a majority.

* DethroningMomentOfSuck: Even for some of Russell's fans, his behaviour at the reunions at ''Heroes Vs. Villains'' caused this. He pretty much showed himself GenreBlind to the fact that evicted players have to ''like'' you, or at least ''respect'' you if you want to have any chance at winning. Immediately, he begun saying that the rules were flawed and need to be changed, because ''he didn't win''. (See "CompletelyMissingThePoint") Chances are; Jeff Probst wasn't too fond of his behaviour there, either.

to:

* DethroningMomentOfSuck: DarthWiki/DethroningMomentOfSuck: The ''Tocantins'' representatives shamed their season during ''Heroes vs Villains''. First, Tyson screwed his alliance's plan, thereby getting ''himself'' voted off early. Then, Coach did not force a tie for a chance to save their leader, and his alliance got systematically voted off (except for Sandra) afterwards, starting with ''him''. And finally, J.T, ''the season's winner'', apparently TookALevelInDumbass and attempted to SaveTheVillain, only to get himself voted off for his efforts by the UngratefulBastard he bothered to save.
** How's ''[[BeyondTheImpossible two people quitting within minutes of each other]]'' catch your fancy? That's exactly what happened in ''Nicaragua'', when [=NaOnka=] and Purple Kelly quit with only nine competitors and 11 days left... because they couldn't handle a little rain. Their tribemates, both current and former, were visibly disgusted with them... and for good reason. Especially after both got to sit on the jury. They didn't even get tribe colors on their torches during the "honor your tribemates" tribute march.

** ''Fiji'' also was hit with this and TheyChangedItNowItSucks; because only one person on the show actually applied. Everyone else was recruited. The producers also admit that it's a failed experiment. (A "heaven" tribe and a "hell" tribe. Needless to say every challenge was more or less a CurbStompBattle)

** The Final Three format gets hit with this a lot. Probst actually says he prefers the final three because people would bring someone to the finals for perverse incentives, whereas others argue that this is part of the game, Others also point out that it's still in between two people in the end, since there has only been one season in which all three members in the final three received at least one vote (China: Amanda received one vote, Courtney received two, Todd received four)

** In-show, Eric had a lot of Jury time to watch [[SmugSnake Russell's]] unstoppable rise to power in ''Samoa'', and to see Mick and Natalie follow their deceitful leader to the success of the final Tribal Council. [[HumbleHero You]] [[HeroicSelfDeprecation would say that you are least deserving of the title]] of SoleSurvivor, but maybe (just maybe) in an environment filled with arrogance [and] delusional entitlement, maybe the person who thinks she's least deserving is probably the most."

* BadassDecay: James laments [[TheAce Colby]]'s disappointing struggling early in ''Heroes Vs Villains''.
-->"[[ConfessionCam My Superman sucks!]]"

* ComplacentGamingSyndrome: Three out of three times now, Russell's strategy was always "Ally with some pretty little bimbo that I can manipulate." Even though it didn't work the first two times - both of those girls were at least as savvy as he was, and the first time it actively backfired when ''she'' manipulated ''him'' and won! Lampshaded during the third time, where other members of his tribe knew what he was up to from the start.

* EverybodyRemembersTheStripper: Obviously, Jenna and Heidi stripping for peanut butter and chocolate during ''Amazon''. So much that they even posed for {{Playboy}}. Jenna lampshaded this during ''America's Tribal Council'' saying people will remember her stripping instead of actually winning that season.
* EvilIsCool: Some contestants believe this (as it ''is'' a game of deception), and swear to lie, cheat, and steal their way to the million. YourMileageMayVary as to how cool they actually are though. (Not that they care, [[AttentionWhore as long as it keeps the camera on them]].)
** ''Samoa'''s Russell Hantz, who was not only one of the wickedest bastards to ever play the game, but also has his share of fans. It helped him that, in that season, GoodIsDumb; the choice was between repulsive (and, outside of idol-hunting, not that great) strategy, and no apparent strategy at all.
** The Villain tribe from ''Heroes vs Villains''. Their dramatic entrance alone was all kinds of {{Badass}}, the descent of their chopper literally [[AHandfulForAnEye blowing sand right at the Hero tribe's faces]].

* GameBreaker: The Hidden Immunity Idol in ''Exile Island'' and ''Cook Islands''. Although Yul used it strategically to sway Jonathan, it otherwise pretty much made him invincible the entire game. You can see why they added a rule stating you can only use it until the final six.

* NeverLiveItDown: The especially manipulative, deceitful, or heavy-handed contestants tend to get treated this way, along with the WhatAnIdiot contestants.

* SpotlightStealingSquad: One or two guys get the bulk of the screentime each season. Usually the main one's a Machiavelli wannabe that CBS thinks we'll "LoveToHate" -- but we just hate him, making him TheWesley.
** ''Samoa'' might as well have been called "The Russell Hantz Show" given how much they worked his ramblings into ''every single episode'' and the viewers can probably think "...who're these guys in the purple? And who's that 'Mick' person they keep dragging along...?"".
*** When it was confirmed Russell and Rob were returning to ''Redemption Island'', suffice to say, you can pretty much expect to ''only'' see Rob and Russell unless they were voted out.
**** Surprisingly; they actually ''haven't'' forgotten that there was a total of ''eighteen'' players this time...so far. It also helps that Russell got booted in the third episode (he's still on Redemption Island, but nothing happens there so they don't spend much screentime on it).
** Russell was easily the worst, but other spotlight stealers were Rupert of ''Pearl Islands'', Stephenie of ''Palau'' and ''Guatemala'', and Coach of ''Tocantins''.
** Some of Rob and Amber's fellow Survivors actually did call ''All-Stars'' "The Rob & Amber Show."

* TooCoolToLive: The strong, cool and outstanding players are usually the first ones to be targeted for elimination (post-merge) by their fellow castaways because they see him/her as a great threat in the game. Usually leads to a ShockingElimination.

* CharacterAlignment:
** ChaoticGood: Sugar from ''Gabon''. She doesn't mind losing as long as "good people" win the game, but she isn't reluctant on screwing the "bad ones" from winning.
*** Dr. Sean from ''Borneo''. During the early stages of his season, he swore to always vote his conscious regardless of alliances. During the merge, his alphabet system was designed so he didn't have to make alliances with anyone at all and thus never betray anybody. Of course, some people took advantage of his naivete and aligned ''their'' votes with whomever was next in line in Sean's alphabet system.
** ChaoticNeutral: While they may have flashes of either sincere generosity or outright malice, almost every single contestant is truly this at heart.
** NeutralGood: Ethan Zohn from ''Africa'' and Rupert Boneham from ''Pearl Islands'' fit this very well in RealLife. Ethan organizes charity games for children and Rupert used his winnings to start a youth outreach program.
** LawfulGood: Tom in his original season, where he was such a saint that he practically guilted a fellow player into giving up an Immunity challenge (and later his spot in the Final).
*** Colby from ''The Australian Outback'', who ruined his chances at winning by bringing with him the person he felt most ''deserved'' to be in the Final Two, rather than the person he felt he could beat.
*** Arguably, Kim in ''Africa'', although some have thought that maybe she brought Ethan with her to the finals because she felt he deserved it more, rather than Lex's mad witch-hunting earlier in the season.
** TrueNeutral: Sandra Diaz-Twine is the quintessential example. Her "As long as it's not me" strategy explains it all.
** But at the end of the day, players' alignments within the game fall almost exclusively on the SelfishGoodSelfishEvil axis. Only one can win, after all.

* EarWorm: The main theme found in every ''Survivor'' introduction.

* EvilIsSexy: Female examples are Parvati, Jerri, Ami, Danielle, Courtney, Sandra. Male examples are Brian, "Boston" Rob, and Tyson.
** BeautyEqualsGoodness: On the other hand, the "Good" characters can boast Ozzy, Colby, J.T., Stephenie and Amanda.

* MagnificentBastard: Richard Hatch from ''Borneo'', Brian Heidik from ''Thailand'', Chris Daugherty from ''Vanuatu'', Todd Herzog from ''China'', and Parvati Shallow from ''Micronesia''. Sandra Diaz-Twine was less outright manipulative, but she was able to win ''twice'' (''Pearl Islands'' and ''Heroes Vs Villains'').
** Honorable mention goes to "Boston" Rob Mariano, who dominated ''All-Stars'' and came within one vote of winning the million dollars, but still got away with far more than any second-placer can even dream of (starting with ''marrying'' the winner).

* NeverLiveItDown: The especially manipulative, deceitful, or heavy-handed contestants tend to get treated this way, along with the WhatAnIdiot contestants.

* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Coach in ''Heroes vs Villians''. He was less obnoxious and he became good at the challenges (and we were less exposed to his... "eccentricities" thanks to [[SpotlightStealingSquad Russell]]). Likewise, Jerri became very well liked by fans throughout ''Heroes vs Villains'', especially when you compare how she was booed off the stage in her previous appearance in the reunion show and how the crowd cheered and applauded her in this recent one. [[WhenSheSmiles Her smile]] could've just lighted up the whole studio.
** Boston Rob's gotten a variation; he was never anybody's Scrappy, but he's certainly been rescued from the ''villain'' heap. He came into Heroes vs. Villains as the arch-manipulator untrustworthy bad guy, but having Russell around to contrast with suddenly made Rob look like a pretty nice, easygoing guy (marriage and fatherhood probably helped too). By ''Redemption Island'', his tribe immediately expressed relief that they got the "good" veteran.

** Somewhat inverted if you watch Probst in the first season, before he had fully ritualized his routine. Viewers have become so used to Jeff's never-changing dialogue and calm demeanor that watching a somewhat nervous, not-so-smooth version of Jeff that stumbles over much of his even more long-winded dialogue, which borders on DisorganizedOutlineSpeech, is highly entertaining

* SoBadItsGood: To some fans, the ''entire show'' counts as this.
** Not necessarily true. As far as reality shows are concerned, it's usually considered to be one of the best. The complaints directed at the show more or less results from disdain of the Reality TV genre itself, rather than the actual show. Generally; if criticisms towards a work are about the ''genre'' rather than the ''work itself'', that shows they're doing ''something'' right.

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: Some of the earlier seasons can be a little hard to watch nowadays because so many twists (Hidden Immunity Idols, Tribal swaps, final three) are now so commonplace it can be seen as boring. And for strategy, many people had played the strategy game so well (Cirie, Russell Hantz, Sandra, Boston Rob, Parvati, Amanda, Bob) some of the early players seem like utter fools in comparison. Even predesignated roles - Jerri proudly wears the title of ''Survivor'''s original Villain, but seeing her in ''Australian Outback'' after the likes of Russell Hantz, Boston Rob, Johnny Fairplay, and Parvati can make her look like just a rude girl in comparison. (She admits as much in the premiere of ''Heroes Vs Villains'', and she wasn't ''that'' villainous thereafter.)
** But you are forgeting that the earlier seasons had a different mindset than what we are used to today. Richard Hatch was HATED by the audience not just for being arrogant, but for daring to play the game at all, because at the time most people(including most of the earlier contestants) considered alliances and shrewd gameplay to be unethical.

* BaseBreaker:
** Rupert Boneham, who either comes around as one of the few people who play the game with integrity and ''not'' wanting to anger everyone, or a doof who needs to learn that he can't just drift through the game on people's shoulders.
** Russell Hantz, who either comes across as a brilliant player who ''knows'' the game and doesn't get enough recognition from his fellow players, or a terrible sport who needs to learn that people don't ''just'' win by playing ''his'' way.
** How people play the game can be a BaseBreaker in itself. It's caused a few fame wars on fan sites.

* EnsembleDarkhorse: Despite the fact that being this has proven to be a very effective means of getting to the end, players and fans still refuse to acknowledge it as an actual strategy.
* FanDumb: Probably the most interesting theme of ''Survivor'' is how differently everyone views the show. To some, it's SoBadItsGood. To other viewers, it may be SoBadItsHorrible or SoCoolItsAwesome, and there's rarely any middle ground opinions about the "quality" of the show. The FanDumb for ''Survivor'' claim that the show used to be good, but dropped off in quality somewhere between ''Australian Outback'' and ''All Stars''. YourMileageMayVary, and it probably will.
* FanNickname: "Pagonging" is when, after tribes merge, the one with the majority systematically eliminates the other (named for the Pagong tribe of ''Borneo'', the first victim of this). As many of the players don't feel a need to ''immediately'' break the original tribal alliances upon merging, pagonging is attempted rather often.
** "Ulonging" is similar; only the tribe gets utterly destroyed ''before'' the merge by losing challenges. Named for the Ulong tribe in ''Palau'', who lost ''every single Immunity challenge''. They went down in history as the only tribe to be completely eliminated before the merge (except for Stephanie). In fact, there was no official merge in that season because of this.
** "Idoled" is when a contestant is eliminated only because another player who has the same or higher total of votes against them uses the Hidden Immunity Idol to save themselves from elimination.
** "Loser Lodge" is a popular term for the Ponderosa, the nearby complex at which Jury members are sequestered before the final Tribal Council.
* FollowTheLeader: Started an entire wave of reality shows.
** Jeff Probst's first speech to the players in ''Heroes Vs Villains'' called his beloved show "the '''greatest''' adventure game in the history of television".
* GuiltyPleasures: Not just the show itself (for some), but the fact that every last female contestant seems utterly obsessed with chocolate and peanut butter...
* HilariousInHindsight: Amber mentioned in her audition tape for ''Australia'' that the host visited her in a dream and told her she would win. Which she did...the ''second'' time she played.
* HoYay: Some contestants are prone to this.
** [[BiTheWay Bisexual]] Ami from ''Vanuatu'' generated more than a little LesYay with some of her female tribemates.
** Parvati Shallow (from ''Cook Islands'', ''Micronesia'' and ''Heroes vs. Villains''), is prone to this, as she uses her good looks to manipulate everyone around her. During ''Heroes vs. Villains'', Danielle's FatalFlaw was defensively revealing her alliance with Parvati to Russell.
-->'''Danielle''': I'm closer to Parvati than you think.
-->'''Russell''': [[TranquilFury ...oh, really?]]
** There's a running joke among hard core Survivor fans that Colby and Jeff Probst are gay lovers. It didn't help to diffuse the rumor when Colby said during the ''Heroes vs Villains'' pre-show special, and I quote, "Probst, snuffing the torch. Man, I'd like to snuff that guy's torch." Seriously, he said this with a straight face... because he meant that he'd like to dismiss Probst from the game. [[FanDumb Sometimes the fans]] [[YaoiFangirl see what they want to see.]]
*** And then there's the running joke amongst some fans where they try guessing which of the men Probst will crush on every new season, as he seems to hold favoritism towards the "manliest men" each season.
** On the "Greatest and Most Outrageous Moments" DVD for ''Borneo'', there's an extended scene of something orignally shown during Jenna Lewis' boot episode. The scene featured Gervase, Sean and Rudy discussing Richard's fishing ability and whether it was worth the value of him not doing any other work around camp. The conversation then turns to Dr Sean discussing Rich being a "fat naked fag", and how he would buy a calandar of other FNF's scuba diving and rock climbing. Ironically, Rudy said that such a calandar would sell "To the queers, anyway".

* NauseaFuel: People ''do'' get hurt in ''Survivor''. Heck, it's an inherent risk, especially in the more recent season in which they have fighting challenges. However, one particular moment following a rather ''vicious'' looking challenge in ''Fans vs. Favourites'' had many viewers looking away from the TV screaming, "EW EW EW EW EW!!!" or feeling like they were about to lose their lunch. Jonathan Penner received a puncture wound to the knee and had to be evacuated from the game due to an infection that could potentially have taken out his leg. They actually showed the medic ''irrigating the puncture wound'' on TV to show how bad it was. Zetta-{{Squick}}!!!!!!
* NeedsMoreLove: Some seasons, most notably ''Thailand'', are very underrated.
** Jerri is often misunderstood.
* PortmanteauCoupleName: "Romber" was one for Rob & Amber.
* RootingForTheEmpire: Maybe you don't accept CBS' choices for DesignatedHero and DesignatedVillain, or maybe GoodIsDumb and [[ArsonMurderAndAdmiration the "villain's" strategy appears better]]. (Russell of ''Samoa'' is a prime example of the latter.)
* SceneryPorn: Especially in the seasons post ''Gabon'', which were shot in HD.
* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: Some of the earlier seasons can be a little hard to watch nowadays because so many twists (Hidden Immunity Idols, Tribal swaps, final three) are now so commonplace it can be seen as boring.
* SuperCouple: "Boston Rob" and Amber; from ''Marquesas'' and ''Australian Outback'' respectively but they courted while playing ''All-Stars''. The fame from this parlayed into ''two'' stints on ''TheAmazingRace'' (one regular, one in ''their'' All-Star season) and their own reality show.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: The many additions/changes to the show have created a BrokenBase over the past seasons.
** If you watch all of the seasons back to back, there is an unmistakable shift in tone that occurs during the more recent seasons starting with ''Vanuatu'', emphasizing strategy and shocking twists over everything else. Whether or not this "sucks" is up to you.
* TooCoolToLive: The strong, cool and outstanding players are usually the first ones to be targeted for elimination (post-merge) by their fellow castaways because they see him/her as a great threat in the game. Usually leads to a ShockingElimination.
* UltimateShowdownOfUltimateDestiny: Fans are anticipating the battle of the {{Sole Survivor}}s and [[TheRunnerUpTakesItAll Runner Ups]]!
* UnfortunateImplications: On ''Cook Islands'', the original tribes were [[strike:segregated]] divided according to race.
* {{Wangst}}: Too many examples to list, but applies to several characters each season.
* TheWesley: As you might have noticed from other tropes listed here, production plays favorites when it comes to screentime. More often than not, people tire of their choices.
** Ben "Coach" Wade. Before ''Tocantins'' began, Jeff Probst claimed that he would be the most popular contestant since Rupert. He then became the focus of the entire season, often getting more screentime than the entire rest of the cast combined. To say there was a backlash would be putting it mildly.
** Russell Hantz is worse, if only for the fact that the viewers had to put up with him for ''three nearly-consecutive'' seasons: ''Samoa''/''[[SpotlightStealingSquad The Russell Hantz Show]]'' and ''Heroes Vs Villains''/''[[SpotlightStealingSquad Heroes vs. Russell]]''; viewers then got a one-season break before he returned again for ''Redemption Island''. (Want to bet that people will call it ''[[SpotlightStealingSquad Russell Island]]''?)
** Boston Rob is hitting this point, too. Returning with other previous players in reunion seasons is one thing - coming back again for a showdown with Russell is another.
** Subverted in ''Nicaragua''. Jimmy Johnson, who had been set up in a classic Wesley role, was voted off third.
* WhatAnIdiot: Guaranteed to happen at least once in glorious fashion during each season:
** Jason Siska in ''Micronesia''. In a 9-day period, he managed to mistake a stick for the hidden immunity idol, give up immunity for a bowl of candy for the tribe, and finally get blindsided while holding a hidden immunity idol - despite coming within one vote of being eliminated at the previous Tribal Council.
** Erik Reichenbach from the same season as well, who is voted off after being manipulated by the [[FemmeFatale Black Widow Brigade]] into giving up his individual immunity for "redemption". Erik's decision wasn't 100% dumb: the others were only slightly exaggerating how much his double-dealing had irritated them. He'd have been unlikely to get enough votes to win without such a generous gesture.
** Also James, he who got voted out of ''China'' while holding ''two'' unused hidden immunity idols. Whenever he's appeared since, [[NeverLiveItDown people have never failed to bring it up]]. However, due to Erik's aforementioned "sacrifice", [[TakeThatMe he said he's no longer the dumbest Survivor ever.]]
** JT in ''Heroes Vs Villains'' ''gave away an immunity idol. To Russell. Whom he's never met before. Who is on the opposite tribe. The one labeled "Villains".'' Because of a faulty assumption that Russell is on the wrong end of an AmazonBrigade.
*** Candice went along ''with'' the villains despite that ''one of them'' (Sandra) was telling her to not do so, especially since they had no intentions of taking her along.
** Brandon on ''Africa'' prevented his former tribe from taking control during the merge by switching his initial vote for major threat and CloudCuckooLander Lex to total non threat and defector Kelly out of a petty dislike for his former Samburu tribemate Frank. This insured that not only would his tribe be Pagonged, but he would eventually be voted out himself for being seen as untrustworthy and undependable.
** Denise during the ''China'' reunion show. She claimed she was fired from her job working as a lunchlady, and was now a janitor in desperate need of money. Producer Mark Burnett felt bad for her and gave her a cash prize to help out her situation. The next day, her lie was exposed, and the money was returned.
** Pretty much 15-16 out of the 20 players in ''Samoa'' managed to make one of these at least once an episode. Put them with a player like Russell, and they practically all voted ''themselves'' off.
* WhatMeasureIsANonBadass: Any winner who most fans deemed as "undeserving" solely for not being both physically and/or strategically dominating and aggressive compared to their [[TheRunnerUpTakesItAll runners-up]]. Notable cases are Tina Wesson from ''Australia'', Amber Brkich from ''All-Stars'' and Natalie White from ''Samoa''.
** As listed above, Becky Lee in ''Cook Islands'' was [[OvershadowedByAwesome ignored because of her opponents in the final three]] are the season's resident [[GuileHero Guile]] and [[ActionHero Action]] heroes.

And There Was Much Rejoicing is about someone getting offed. Big No doesn\'t count if only the fandom screams it.

** To Russell and Rob's fandoms, the confirmation of ''Redemption Island'' being "Russell vs. Rob", while at the same time, a BigNo came from their hatedoms.
* BigNo: Russell and Rob are coming back '''AGAIN'''?!? DARN IT! We won't see ''any'' of the sixteen other players in Redemption Island, knowing how the producers ''love'' the shit out of them.
