** Also the whole premise: A nation gets overrun and those resisting are heroes while those collaborating are villains. All the while Chris Hemworth's character is a marine 'providing security' in overseas. Which makes him a bad guy (occupier) and good guy (resistance fighter) at the same time. Goes for the whole movie and the climate it was released for. Originally it would have come out the same year the Surge in Afghanistan happened (2010) and the retreat of US troops from Iraq. The movie manages to be self-aware and completly oblivious at the same time.

* DidntThinkThisThrough: '''Meta:''' Remaking a movie where the Chinese are the bad guys in a market where China provides a large revenue, only to replace the Chinese villains with North Koreans. Given that a quick internet search could bring this up, it might be considered just as insulting to some Chinese citizens that they'd be so easily interchanged with North Koreans.

Especially ridiculous since a manufacturing superpower rapidly militarizing is believable, while it's well known that the [[PaperTiger pitiful forces]] North Korea currently has are all it's gonna get.

** One of the Wolverines, Daryl, makes a ''VideoGame/CallOfDuty: VideoGame/ModernWarfare'' reference. Before the 2012 remake came out, there was a mission in ''ModernWarfare 2'' that had a ''Film/RedDawn1984'' reference. The mission was called ''Wolverines!'' and the achievement for that mission was ''Red Dawn''.
*** Also, apparently in this continuity Russian ultranationalists took over control of the country. This is ''exactly'' how the ModernWarfare series begins.

* BrokenAesop: A meta-example. The film's message about standing up for your ideals and never giving in to foreign invaders rings rather hollow given that the filmmakers censored the identity of the villains in post-production to retain access to that [[MoneyDearBoy sweet Chinese box office cash.]]

Chris Hemsworth\'s character is white, and he dies. This trope is incorrect.

** This was the second film released in 2012 in which [[Film/TheHungerGames Josh Hutcherson co-starred with a Hemsworth brother]]. If not for the long TroubledProduction, one might expect the similarity between the North Koreans' campaign symbol and the flag of Panem to be an intentional sight gag.
*** Which would be highly ironic considering Panem is rich and decadent, exactly the opposite of North Korea.

Shooting one guy does not qualify you for this trope; he didn\'t come anywhere near the brutality of the Russians from the original film and in the conext of the film killing only one guy is not that big of a deal.
