** On a meta level, there's the whole fact that after all the trouble the creators went through to earn the Chinese box office money, it ultimately [[ShootTheShaggyDog wasn't]] [[{{Irony}} even]] [[AllForNothing released there.]] What's more, if the villain was changed to North Korea to avoid angering China and causing them to blacklist MGM's future films, that would prove the point of whoever updated the villain to China in the first place. Regardless, it's mentioned the Chinese have apparently invaded the west coast anyway, with the North Koreans only helping in the northwest.

** One of the Wolverines, Daryl, makes a ''VideoGame/CallOfDuty: VideoGame/ModernWarfare'' reference. Before the 2012 remake came out, there was a mission in ''VideoGame/ModernWarfare2'' that had a ''Film/RedDawn1984'' reference. The mission was called ''Wolverines!'' and the achievement for that mission was ''Red Dawn''.
*** Also, apparently in this continuity Russian ultranationalists took over control of the country. This is ''exactly'' how the ''VideoGame/ModernWarfare'' series begins.

*** Which would be highly ironic considering Panem is rich and decadent, exactly the opposite of North Korea.

* CommonKnowledge: Due to the change of Chinese invaders being switched to North Korean for a multitude of reasons, the movie is assumed to have the plot of the DPRK taking over the ''entire'' United States which gets it trashed as unrealistic and absurd. In actuality they are only providing ''assistance'' to the off-screen Chinese holding the west coast and Russian forces holding the east coast by being assigned the Pacific Northwest to occupy. While still an arguably far fetched premise, it does become less jarring once it's clear it's still China and Russia doing the brunt of the work while North Korea is only taking on a relatively smaller slice.

Not a YMMV Trope.

* DidntThinkThisThrough: '''Meta:''' Remaking a movie where the Chinese are the bad guys in a market where China provides a large revenue, only to replace the Chinese villains with North Koreans. Given that a quick internet search could bring this up, it might be considered just as insulting to some Chinese citizens that they'd be so easily interchanged with North Koreans. Especially ridiculous since a manufacturing superpower rapidly militarizing is believable, while it's well known that the [[PaperTiger pitiful forces]] North Korea currently has are all it's gonna get. After all the money and time spent, it was ultimately not even released in China at all.
** Also the whole premise: A nation gets overrun and those resisting are heroes while those collaborating are villains. All the while Chris Hemworth's character is a marine 'providing security' in overseas. Which makes him a bad guy (occupier) and good guy (resistance fighter) at the same time. Goes for the whole movie and the climate it was released for. Originally it would have come out the same year the Surge in Afghanistan happened (2010) and the retreat of US troops from Iraq. The movie manages to be self-aware and completly oblivious at the same time.

** The film opens with Josh Peck's character losing a football game. [[Series/DrakeAndJosh At least he didn't have to go through a bunch of wacky sitcom hijinx to trade places with a crazy janitor in order to do so.]]
