** Even Misty, the original heroine, has gotten a lot of retroactive hate. A lot of it comes from her being seen as a sterotypical Tsundere and for constantly complaining about what a terrible trainer Ash is, even though from the seventh episode onward he is shown to be her equal at worst. More comes from her supposedly losing all of her personality after obtaining Toegpi and having basically no role in the show shortly thereafter.

** Cilan is indeed an Ensemble Darkhorse of Best Wishes (and Pokemon Black and White in general). However, given Pokemon's status, people will find things to hate him. The best example is that he's accused of being a CreatorsPet for taking the spotlight away from Ash and Iris and generally given more Character Development than Brock has done during the entire series. These fans are the Vocal Minority though and generally bash him due to Nostalgia Filter. Other reasons include he's way past his times within 50 episodes and want Brock back, his "antics get old" (despite the fact Brock flirting for 4 generations caused the same backdraft), and the fact that he's Ambiguously Gay/Camp Straight compared to the Lovable Sex Maniac Brock was. Depending on where you look depends on how much of a Base Breaker Cilan is. (EX. The main Pokemon forums like Serebi.Net and Bulbapedia will take a jab at him mainly because they are bias to Best Wishes and the 5th generation in general while websites like Youtube, Fanfiction.Net, Deviant Art and any non-Pokemon sites think the opposite.)

After going on forums, I found that Cilan is indeed a Ensemble Darkhorse. However, due to Pokemon being a Broken Base, fandom will always find something to complain about especially the forums. As a result, this is a case of Vocal Minority where the haters are more vocal than those who like Cilan mainly due to Nostalgia Filter. Also, what I learned is by bringing up Cilan in a non-Pokemon forum about characters from other series they like, people like Cilan a lot and there is hardly any backlash.

No need to worry, though, as the problem was rectified and the voices were subsequently added in, almost immediately after the episode that Who's That Pokémon? had debuted with in Best Wishes.

* Woolseyism: Naturally quite a few, particularly the puns which can/can't be translated. One worthy of note, however, is that Brock's Sudowoodo's use of Take Down in the original Japanese - which Sudowoodo cannot legitimately learn in the games - was changed in the English dub to Double Edge, a move with similar properties which Sudowoodo can use.
