* HarsherInHindsight: For the one who have some taste of Black Humor (or who hate NSYNC, One Direction, or boybands in general, [[http://9gag.com/gag/abbAdMp/nsync-s-joey-fatone-tells-one-direction-everything-is-about-to-be-terrible this post]] will make you chuckle. Note the post was made in 2015 and it is correct that every members have pursued independent careers but it is officially on "hiatus".
* The title of ''Four'', after Zayn's departure left only four of them.

* HilariousInHindsight: All that scandal about 1D ripping off "Baba O'Riley"? When Harry went solo, his first single was "Sign Of The Times", which stunned everyone by taking influence from Music/DavidBowie and Music/{{Prince}}. In fact, there may be a trend of "Stylinators" who have credited Harry with [[GatewaySeries getting them into classic rock]]. And let's not even get into who their entire career [[Music/TheBeatles reminds one of...]]

* ILikedItBetterWhenItSucked: Those who grew up with the likes of Music/BackstreetBoys and Music/{{NSYNC}} dismissed 1D's lack of crazy clothes, over-the-top ballads, TotallyRadical/cheeky attitudes and heavily choreographed performances, disappointed that it was just five guys singing and nothing more.

** "Back to You" for Louis
** "Sign of the Times" for Harry

* EarWorm:
** "Baby you light up my world like nobody else! The way that you flip your hair makes me overwhelmed. But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell.."
** "And we danced all night to the best song every. We knew every line, now I can't remember."

* YokoOhNo:
** A large chunk of the fandom's attitude towards Zayn's ex-fiancee, Perrie Edwards of Music/LittleMix. This has not helped matters when Zayn announced he was quitting the group, despite allegations surfacing of him cheating on her and [[http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6523823/this-is-us-director-morgan-spurlock-addresses-zayn-malik-one-direction-exit anecdotal evidence]] that he was overwhelmed and felt he couldn't handle the amount of pressure and fame that came with being in the group. She ''still'' gets hate from Zayn fans, even after they broke up.
** Keep in mind that all the past and present girlfriends who dated or even hooked up with the members get this from fans. Even the ''family'' of the young woman who gave birth to Louis's son wasn't safe. And Music/CherylCole got loads of flack from the fandom for hooking up with Liam early in 2016, especially given their 10-year age difference, that they crossed paths on ''The X Factor'' when he was 14, and the fact that they now share a son together.

* FandomBerserkButton: We hope [[LongList you're sitting comfortably]]...

** One that has come and past was the issue of "Best Song Ever" ripping off [[Music/TheWho "Baba O'Riley"]]. Fans of The Who were less angry than annoyed, but Directioners were '''''ballistic''''' over the offense to such an accusation.
** An even bigger one was pushed less than a week after the Who controversy. 1D fans still haven't forgotten the famous Channel 4 documentary that famously featured [[{{Flanderization}} Flanderized]] Directioners and portrayed them as insane.

* CrackPairing: [[https://fanlore.org/wiki/Hobama Hobama]], which refers to the pairing of Harry Styles with UsefulNotes/BarackObama. Originally arose from someone photoshopping Harry's image into a tabloid cover accusing Obama of having secretly had a homosexual affair with a man, at which point the fandom just ran with it. Sometimes used to parody the more [[FanDumb absurd]] behaviour of other shippers, particularly believers in Larry Stylinson (see BrokenBase, above).

* AwardSnub:
** ''Massively'' inverted. They've won nineteen Teen Choice Awards. Out of nineteen nominations. In fact, no other nominee in TCA history has come close to the amount of awards they've received without losing even ''once.'' And that's not counting other fan-voted awards ceremonies they remain undefeated at, like the Kids' Choice Awards or [=VMAs=]. Heck, not even Justin Bieber can make that same claim (he's only undefeated as the [=KCAs=]; he should be thanking god he was never nominated against "What Makes You Beautiful" for Favorite Song in 2013, as he almost certainly would have lost). Then, in 2015 they lost to Super Junior. ''Twice''. Despite the loss, they came out with a consolation prize -- namely, setting the all-time Teen Choice Awards win record. In 2016 however, they took home every award they were nominated for, getting revenge on Super Junior in one category and holding back a post-group Zayn. At the very least most people assumed Fifth Harmony was going to keep them from sweeping the show (like they did at the Kids' Choice Awards).
** A special mention goes to the band's 2013 KCA battle against Series/BigTimeRush for Favorite Music Group. It was almost unanimously agreed that 1D would waltz right past BTR and claim the award in a jiffy. But the fight wasn't nearly as one-sided as expected. In fact, on the Twitter-voting page, BTR built up a solid lead for the first month, and although 1D closed the gap in the past few days, BTR ultimately ended up narrowly ahead. But for the votes tallied on Nick.com, 1D absolutely ''demolished'' BTR, in large part to the younger tween fans who didn't have a Twitter account at the time. This proved enough for 1D to nearly double BTR's votes for the award, with 63% of all votes cast being for them, and come out with the win.

* BrokenBase: After Zayn announced he quit the group, the fandom broke off into supporting the group as a four piece, deciding the group should just call it a day, supporting Zayn in whatever path he chooses, hating him for leaving, or quit caring about the group because Zayn was the only member they liked.

* GrowingTheBeard: Critics and non-fans are saying that the heartfelt-sounding "Story of My Life" is the beginning of One Direction's maturing as a music group.

* SignatureSong: "What Makes You Beautiful". "Pillowtalk" for Zayn's solo career, and "Slow Hands" for Niall's.
** "Back to You" for Louis. "Sign of the Times" for Harry. "Strip That Down" for Liam.

** Very few people in the 1D fandom were supportive of [[Music/TaylorSwift Haylor]], to the point that the backlash contributed to the change of Swift's public image into the BreakUpSong specialist she's known as today.
** Just ''don't'' try to mention Music/TheWanted in front of a Directioner. And god forbid, if you say that they're better than 1D...

** Modest Management. There's nothing more to say about them other than that Directioners ''hate'' them (mainly being blamed for Zayn's departure and/or the rumored closeting of "Larry").
** Every time 1D releases a new music video on VEVO, the amount of hate directed at them is absolutely ''nuclear'' due to rumors of them fixing the view count and seemingly costing the group a shot at the 24-hour view record; i.e. them taking away 13 million views from "Story of My Life" and awarding them the record for "Steal My Girl" only to revoke it soon afterwards.
** Naughty Boy is also massively unpopular with the Directioner fandom due to him allegedly being the one who convinced Zayn to do a solo career.
*** Naughty Boy and Zayn have since had a falling out...
** There was also the US One Direction lawsuit[[note]]an American band called One Direction that predated the UK group filed a lawsuit over their name...and lost because it was said to be merely a publicity stunt[[/note]], the Daily Show gaffe[[note]]a joke at the band's expense was made on a segment about ISIS, with many Directioners thinking it referred to Zayn who is of Pakistani descent[[/note]], the GQ magazine "Get Lucky" cover[[note]]The August 2013 issue of the magazine featured a caption about Harry being a Casanova[[/note]], the attack at a 1D tribute band...it really is too much to fit all on one page!
** Then of course, do not, in any way, suggest that 1D's hiatus in order to pursue solo careers is a break-up within the vicinity of a Directioner.
** On the flip side, for some fans, things that used to drive wedges between factions of the fandom only seem to make them laugh now...

* SignatureSong: "What Makes You Beautiful". "Pillowtalk" for Zayn's solo career, and "This Town" for Niall's.
** "Just Hold On" for Louis. "Sign of the Times" for Harry.

* ReplacementScrappy: Ian Watkins.

* GuiltyPleasure: Their better songs tend to be this. In particular, "Best Song Ever", "Live While We're Young", and "Midnight Memories" has developed reputations that those who deride the band actually admit to liking those specific songs, despite (or maybe because of) the fact that they sample/interpolate other older songs ([[Music/TheWho "Baba O'Riley"]], [[Music/TheClash "Should I Stay or Should I Go"]], and [[Music/DefLeppard "Pour Some Sugar On Me]]" respectively).

* [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff Americans Love One Direction]]: Despite the [[EveryYearTheyFizzleOut previously unremarkable track record]] of British boy bands trying to break America, they became just as popular, if not even ''more'' so, than at home. The level of success they have achieved in the United States is ''unprecedented'' for a U.K. boy band. Not since Music/TheBeatles has any boy band, let alone a British one, had such an explosive rise to the top (Music/{{NSYNC}} and the Music/BackstreetBoys took about a year to build their popularity).

* {{Foreshadowing}}: The name of the last album released while Zayn was on the band was FOUR. May also double as HarsherInHindsight

* SoOkayItsAverage: The general consensus of their music, outside their [[VocalMinority fandom and hatedom]]. They're catchy and non-offensive, but nothing horribly impressive in terms of musical talent. They also haven't attracted the sheer vitriol that hit Music/JustinBieber (mostly because the hate that they normally would've gotten continued going to Bieber).

* AmericansHateTingle: ''Completely averted''. Despite the [[EveryYearTheyFizzleOut previously unremarkable track record]] of British boy bands trying to break America, they became just as popular, [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff if not even]] ''[[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff more]]'' [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff so]], than at home. The level of success they have achieved in the United States is ''unprecedented'' for a U.K. boy band.
