** There's an [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74KAGEe-IdU interesting Wattpad genre]] of RealPersonFic in which the band exists in the universe of ''Franchise/ThePurge.'' This can manifest in ways such as one of the boys being a criminal, the boys using the purge as an excuse to get away with illegal but righteous acts of justice, or a crossover with the typical "living with One Direction" SelfInsertFic.

** "Sign of the Times", "Adore You" or "Watermelon Sugar" for Harry.

* CoveredUp: People nowadays think that "One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)" is a One Direction original, when, in fact, it's actually a cover of the same song by Music/{{Blondie}}, which was released in 1978. The altered lyrics to include "teenage kicks" near the end also do not help.

* FaceOfTheBand: Harry Styles. That said, it's not in effect nearly as much as with other bands due to the promotion of other members. Even most non-fans can name every member of 1D. To be fair, if anyone other than Harry is recognized by non-fans it'll likely be Zayn because of his sudden departure and solo career.

* CoveredUp: People nowadays think that "One Way or Another" is a One Direction original, when, in fact, it's actually a cover of the same song by Music/{{Blondie}}, which was released in 1978.

** "Kill My Mind", "Walls" or "Two of Us" for Louis.

** [[http://9gag.com/gag/abbAdMp/nsync-s-joey-fatone-tells-one-direction-everything-is-about-to-be-terrible This post]] made in reaction to the band's hiatus feels downright prophetic; sure enough, every member of the band has released solo work, Harry is arguably the most successful of them overall, and his somewhat {{camp}} stylings have eanred him a massive LGBTFanbase. The joke about Louis dropping off the map completely turned out to be off the mark, though, as he's still releasing music and relatively popular in his native U.K.

* HarsherInHindsight:
** For the one who have some taste of Black Humor (or who hate NSYNC, One Direction, or boybands in general, [[http://9gag.com/gag/abbAdMp/nsync-s-joey-fatone-tells-one-direction-everything-is-about-to-be-terrible this post]] will make you chuckle. Note the post was made in 2015 and it is correct that every members have pursued independent careers but it is officially on "hiatus".
** The title of ''Four'', after Zayn's departure left only four of them.
* HilariousInHindsight: The pre-chorus of "Up All Night" mentions Music/KatyPerry being on replay at the boys' party, with the final line being "I'm still '''wide awake'''". Coincidentally, Katy would release an album featuring a song of the same name (which eventually became a single) four months later.

** "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fax_Wy7Sbyg Rock Me]]" to Music/{{Queen}}'s "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tJYN-eG1zk]]", particularly due to both using the clashing hand claps and drumbeats.

* SoOkayItsAverage: The general consensus of their music, outside their [[VocalMinority fandom and hatedom]]. They're catchy and non-offensive, but nothing horribly impressive in terms of musical talent. They also haven't attracted the sheer vitriol that hit Music/JustinBieber, mostly because of Bieber's increasingly negative public image as he got older.

* FandomEnragingMisconception: We hope [[LongList you're sitting comfortably]]...

** "Slow Hands" for Niall.
** "Back to You", "Miss You", or "Kill My Mind" for Louis.

* BrokenBase:
** After Zayn announced he quit the group, the fandom broke off into supporting the group as a four piece, deciding the group should just call it a day, supporting Zayn in whatever path he chooses, hating him for leaving, or quit caring about the group because Zayn was the only member they liked.
** Larry Stylinson is a hugely controversial and divisive. One side thinks Louis and Harry are in a relationship and their management is closeting them and the other believes all the speculation about a romance is ruining the boys friendship and the band.
*** Of course, there are people who don’t quite fit into these categories: “Houies” believe Harry and Louis had something in the past and broke up. There are those who think it is possible they were/are together but that it isn’t anyone’s business. There are also those who just don’t care, be they fans who prefer to focus on them as individuals and artists rather than who they may be dating (this sector dislikes the above for taking attention away from the music and the “important” things) or fans who aren’t affected and stay out of it.
*** And to a much lesser but still incredibly passionate extent, there is a debate as to whether or not Zayn and Liam (known as "Ziam") are in a secret relationship as well.
** There's actually very little in the 1D fandom that hasn't been contested. The only thing Directioners seem to unanimously agree on is a severe hatred of the boys' management company, Modest Management.
* CrackPairing: [[https://fanlore.org/wiki/Hobama Hobama]], which refers to the pairing of Harry Styles with UsefulNotes/BarackObama. Originally arose from someone photoshopping Harry's image into a tabloid cover accusing Obama of having secretly had a homosexual affair with a man, at which point the fandom just ran with it. Sometimes used to parody the more absurd behaviour of other shippers, particularly believers in Larry Stylinson (see BrokenBase, above).

** 1D fans still haven't forgotten the famous Channel 4 documentary that famously featured [[{{Flanderization}} Flanderized]] Directioners and portrayed them as insane.

* HoYay: In "Little Things", when you have five guys sitting in a circle singing a love song in first and second person, it's really hard not to think they're serenading each other.
