* CompleteMonster: The Chancellor is the ANaziByAnyOtherName manipulative dictator who runs the State. As revealed in flashbacks from the film and supplementary materials, the Chancellor was the catalyst behind the Great World War that left countless dead and every country except his own on the verge of bankruptcy and starvation. Taking advantage of this, the Chancellor manipulates the Scientist into constructing the B.R.A.I.N. under threat, after which the Chancellor reformats the B.R.A.I.N. into a "Fabrication Machine" to produce weapons of war. Subjecting the Machine to great abuse and stress over the course of months, the Chancellor uses the weapons it makes to wage war on every country but his own and get thousands slaughtered. When the Fabrication Machine goes rogue, the Chancellor frames the whole ordeal on the Scientist and tries to save his own life by abandoning the State, showing himself for the despicably selfish monster he is.

Why do we have to right their wrongs?" really puts in scope that he's VERY bitter with being abandoned in a dead planet with machines hunting them down because of the Chancellor's greed. Try to imagine this: You're left with only a few others like yourself, after surviving a war caused by a single human's misdeeds, in a completely destroyed and dead planet with horrifying creatures that want to kill you for your souls, and you alone are left with the task of protecting them, while being the size of a toy. In a way, 1 is a ShellShockedVeteran who's been pushed way over the Cynical side of the scale.]]

* AwardSnub: The studio tried to get a nomination for Creator/MarionCotillard but it didn't happen, despite most critics praising her as the best part of the film, and her intense performance of "Take It All" (which did get a nom).
* BestKnownForTheFanservice: Creator/PenelopeCruz in lingerie on a swing, Creator/KateHudson dancing in a Stripperiffic costume, Fergie pouring sand all over herself and Creator/MarionCoutillard stripping off intensely. Partially justified since the main character is a bit of a lech.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Stephanie is one of the favourites in the movie adaptation. Her (movie only!) song "Cinema Italiano" is a huge EarWorm, and Creator/KateHudson received lots of praise for it. The other popular movie character is Saraghina, thanks to Fergie's impressive performance.
* FlatCharacter: Creator/RogerEbert criticised all the characters in the film for being this. "But that's what they are, stars, because the movie doesn't make them characters".
* JerkassWoobie: Guido may be an idiotic ManChild who can't keep it in his pants. But it's hard not to feel a little sorry for him as his entire life crashes around him.
* JustHereForGodzilla: Some agree that Creator/MarionCotillard is the best part of the film, citing that it's worth watching only for her powerful performance of "Take It All".
* OneSceneWonder: Fergie as Saraghina for the extremely memorable "Be Italian" sequence.
* SheReallyCanAct: A variation. Kate Hudson showed that she could really dance. Even the negative reviews expressed pleasant surprise.
* SoOkayItsAverage: General consensus is that the film is too clunky with its pacing but the performances salvage it somewhat.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Fans of the stage musical weren't happy about a lot of the original score being cut for the film adaptation.
* TookTheBadFilmSeriously: The film was considered by many to be a catastrophe, but Creator/DanielDayLewis delved into his character just as much as he has in any other character he's ever played. Many critics wondered if it would hurt his mostly unblemished career at all. He's seconded by Creator/MarionCotillard, who director Creator/RobMarshall viewed as the real star of the film. Her powerful, emotional performance of the MovieBonusSong "Take It All" nearly redeemed the film for some.
* ToughActToFollow: This was Rob Marshall's first musical following the hit that was . While the former got thirteen Oscar nominations and received raucous praise, Nine only got four nominations and mixed reviews.
