History YMMV / LEGO

** LEGO released an entire minifigure series based around Disney in 2016. It's safe to say that few people expected something like this, since LEGO isn't known to put licensed characters into a minifigure theme, outside of ''The Simpsons'', and even that had DTC sets to back it up.
** 2018 was the start of LEGO ''VideoGame/{{Overwatch}}'' sets. Unexpected, since video game-based themes only got made when they have a LEGO Ideas set based around them. Not to mention that ''Overwatch'' [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids has a T-Rating]].

** In 2019, LEGO revealed that they would be making sets based on ''WesternAnimation/TrollsWorldTour'', the first theme based on a Creator/DreamWorks property. Reactions were... mixed to say the least, as ''Trolls'' isn't particularly popular with the PeripheryDemographic.

** On March 10th, 2020, LEGO [[https://mobile.twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/1237363045271126017 announced]] a partnership with Creator/{{Nintendo}} to create sets based on ''Franchise/SuperMarioBros'' This was surprising due to how Mario was associated with LEGO’s rival K’NEX (though it's most likely their license expired) and the fact that Mario’s formal rival ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'' has appeared in ''VideoGame/LegoDimensions'' but has yet to receive a proper LEGO set.

* TheScrappy: Identical minifigures that show up in almost every set in a theme, especially those that have no story related reasons to be included. For instance, Owen Grady shows up in three of the four ''WesternAnimation/JurassicWorldCampCretaceous'' sets, despite not being a character in the series.

* EnsembleDarkhorse: Some LEGO minifigure parts tend to be used only ''once'' in a theme, but they still get a lot of recognition for being unique and having loads of potential, [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter with some fans wishing that LEGO would use them more]].

* FanNickname: Cheese slopes are the most well-known, but other parts, mini-figs and themes have been nicknamed.

** A Marvel Heroes set pits Deadpool and Magneto against Wolverine. While Magneto has had his share of violence in the comics, the release of R-rated, strip-club-featuring, innuendo-and-curse-soaked ''Film/{{Deadpool|2016}}'' and the equally gory and profane (not to mention tonally even darker) ''Film/{{Logan}}'' makes this verging on a FunnyAneurysmMoment.

* PeripheryDemographic: LEGO was primarily meant to be a toy for children. It is ''immeasurably'' popular with teenagers and adults--a demographic LEGO has been more than happy to welcome as time has gone on.

* CreatorsPet:
** Some people have noticed that ''Franchise/StarWars'', ''[[Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse Marvel]]'', ''Creator/DCComics'' and ''Franchise/HarryPotter'' get a lot more attention than any other licensed themes. While this isn't a problem if one is a fan of these brands, some people express frustration about it, thinking that the other themes could actually use more attention.
** The Big-figs. Even though many collectors and especially customizers have complained about the general uselessness of these figures, LEGO keeps using them to this day.

* MisaimedMarketing: Cleverly averted. The 2016 DC Super Heroes set managed to tie in loosely to ''Film/SuicideSquad2016'', but avoided any outcry over the subject material by using the comic versions of the Squad instead and not mentioning the film once.

** Animation based LEGO themes are very popular in general, despite being very sparsely released and often very expensive. Those include ''Toy Story'', ''WesternAnimation/TheIncredibles'', ''Franchise/DisneyPrincess'' [[note]]For those who don't mind the mini-dolls[[/note]], the aforementioned ''[=SpongeBob=]'', ''TMNT'', ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'', ''WesternAnimation/ScoobyDoo'' and ''WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls''. Most of which were very shortlived, except ''[=SpongeBob=]'', the original runs of ''Toy Story'' and ''WesternAnimation/{{Cars}}'', and ''Disney Princess'' [[note]]since this one is a huge hit with it's target demographic: Little girls[[/note]].

** Sure ''Franchise/{{Mario}}'' can be considered for kids, but you have to wonder... how many had ''[[UncannyValley night]][[NightmareFuel mares]]'' upon seeing [[https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EYinqM5X0AIqzy-.jpg the deactivated Mario figurine?]]

* CompleteMonster: In addition to [[Monster/{{Bionicle}} the ones on the Bionicle page]], there’s also [[YMMV/{{Galidor}} Gorm]]; [[YMMV/LegoExoForce Meca One Prime]]; [[YMMV/HeroFactory Witch Doctor and Core Hunter]]; and [[YMMV/{{Ninjago}} Prince Kalamar]], see those pages for details.

** LEGO Vs Mega Bloks shorts on Website/YouTube are not uncommon. Both are similar in design and use, and LEGO did sue Mega Bloks in the past.

** While it is a little convenient that LEGO launched a new ''ComicBook/SpiderMan'' theme around the time ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManIntoTheSpiderVerse'' came out, featuring characters like Peter Parker, Comicbook/MilesMorales, ComicBook/SpiderGwen, Aunt May and most of Spider-Man's RoguesGallery, the lack of characters from ''Spider-Verse'' [[note]]Comicbook/SpiderHam, Peni Parker, ComicBook/SpiderManNoir, ComicBook/TheKingpin, etc.[[/note]] was upsetting for many ''Spider-Man'' fans. Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Ham later got added to the series, but many complained that [[WTHCostumingDepartment the former looked more like a cowboy than a detective]].
** The lack of a proper ''Shazam!'' theme, considering how ''Film/Shazam2019'' came out around that time, was quite a bummer. Granted, there was a figure of Shazam in the new ''Batman'' theme and LEGO likely refused the idea due to trying to avert SpoiledByTheMerchandise this time, there is quite a lot that could've been done with characters from the movie who only appeared in the trailers so far.

* ValuesDissonance: It's very unlikely that [[https://brickset.com/sets/215-1/Red-Indians set 215 "Red Indians"]] (who are literally coloured red rather than the usual yellow) would be considered acceptable in the 2020s.

** ''[[Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse Marvel]]'' fans are also annoyed at how LEGO simply recylced the character designs for [[ComicBook/TheIncredibleHulk Hulk]] and ComicBook/{{Thanos}} in the respective ''Film/AvengersEndgame'' set, despite the heavy redesigns (Hulk getting a shirt, Thanos not having a helmet). Especially the former, since it shouldn't take too much time to just print the shirt on.
