%%ZCE * TheWoobie: Pretty much ''everyone'', TheWoobie:
** Johnny. His SanitySlippage and increasing obsession with the book/House cause him to lose his job and home and descend into drug addiction. There seems a spot of hope at the end of the book when he tells he's recovered, [[spoiler:but then turns out he made that up]]. By the end he's a BrokenBird. And all of this story happens after he had a broken childhood, with his father having died, his mother being put in an asylum, and abusive stepparents.
** Seraphina. She loses her husband and can't handle that emotionally, so she's put in an asylum, away from her son. The institution is a hellhole where she's repeatedly raped and abused (though this might also be her imagination... remember that to her it still is real). She tries to let her son know of the abuse in her letters,
but especially Tom. he doesn't visit her, or mabye doesn't even write back.

Zero Context Examples. How can which characters be interpreted differently? How does the book make you paranoid? Also, Broken Base is when there are at least two large faction within fanbase, so doesn't apply to "some".

* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Not a single character in the book that isn't subject to this, which [[InvertedTrope seemed to be the point of the entire book anyway]], considering Danieleski's fortay.
* BaseBreaker: [[spoiler: Johnny's fate]] is this for some, especially since [[spoiler: the book technically provides a BittersweetEnding for the Navidsons and even Zampano, but yet Johnny doesn't get anything and when he does, he tells the reader it was a ruse]].
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Johnny's digressions about his and Lude's sexual exploits can seem kind of pointless. Alternately, some readers will find ''everything'' about Johnny kind of pointless. Johnny's incoherent writing is partly justified though because he uses drugs frequently, and, as he himself writes, often writes when on drugs and / or drunk.
* EveryoneIsJesusInPurgatory: The book can be seen as a straight use and alternatively as a parody.
* GeniusBonus: A brief section of musical notation is printed late in the book. It is the first line of the refrain of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", otherwise known as "The Ants Go Marching One by One".

* TrueArtIsIncomprehensible: To the power of ten, and it makes the book more chaotic with For one thing, just the formatting that Danieleski (that Danielewski put such much effort in.
in) alone is chaotic and disorientating--deliberately, because the book is supposed to be a labyrinth just like the House itself is. Combined with the {{UnreliableNarrator}}s, the copious amounts of untranslated foreign-language text, and the fact that much of the book is open to many different interpretations, it can be a confusing read.

The house, being supernatural and sinister, deeply affects its inhabitants psychologically and probably was actively trying to "suck" them in. Plus, Navidson is an explorer by nature and drawn to adventurous / dangerous situations (remember he's a photographer who willingly went to war-ridden countries), and as such of course couldn't resist exploring the House.

* HarsherInHindsight: Very early in the story (page 10 or 11), Navy throws away a bit of Karen's hair that's stuck in a brush, and Karen jokingly states that she'll go bald one day and need that hair. [[spoiler: In the story's epilogue, she's in remission from breast cancer.]]

** Several strange interruptions are (presumably intentionally) meant to be like this. Like the time when the text is going so insane that it suddenly transforms into a ''musical score''... unless, of course, [[GeniusBonus you know what the score ''is'', as shown below.]]
