Wrong name used. Richard is Jan's co-worker/lover, Terry is the father.

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Although it may be due to DeliberateValuesDissonance, some fans don't appreciate the implication that Richard and Jan may consider sending Sam to a "reeducation camp", considering how high rates of abuse and mistreatment are there (alongside general homophobia). Although by no means the case for everyone, some people struggle to sympathize with their marital problems as a result.

YMMV can't be played with.

* CriticalDissonance: Downplayed example; while it was controversial at launch, critical and user reviews have more or less converged over time (the recent Steam review score, for instance, is currently near-exactly identical to the Metacritic score.)

* ItWasHisSled: The [[spoiler:gay romance plotline]] is intended as a surprise, but the game's fame and infamy have made it fairly well-known to many players. Overlaps with AllThereIsToKnowAboutTheCryingGame, as it's the main thing the game is known for in popular culture and often the first thing people find out about the game.

this seems to have faded over time, looking at user-vs-critic reviews (at least on sites that can't be as easily review-bombed.)

* CriticalDissonance: Reviewers have given it almost universally glowing reviews, but the reaction among players has been considerably more mixed. This is primarily due to the price point ($20 for at most 3 hours of gameplay), the heavy focus on story-telling over gameplay, and [[spoiler: disputes on how well the queer romance plot was handled]]. Many also puzzled at the comparative implication that in 2013 it was a better game than the likes of ''VideoGame/BioshockInfinite'', ''VideoGame/MetroLastLight'', ''VideoGame/TheLastOfUs'', or ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoV''.

That would never happen during peacetime. All Lonnie would need to do is write a letter requesting to reverse her enlistment and give it to her recruiter.

** Lonnie had already received her orders to report for duty, so her running off with Sam is basically her going AWOL. That doesn't get you a happy life with your true love, that gets you an dishonorable discharge and 2-5 years in Leavenworth Prison.

That happens at the very end, and it does not drive the conflict of the plot

* IdiotPlot: This being set in 1995, there was a real simple way for [[spoiler:Lonnie to get out of the military. When she arrived at Basic Training, tell them immediately she was gay or bi. She would have gotten out legally within a day or two, a week at most. Instead she's went AWOL and asked Sam to come find her, instead of just waiting a week when she realized she'd made a mistake in order to come home legally.]]

Punctuation correction

** How good is Katie's relationship with her parents? On the one hand, there is some evidence that [[ParentalFavoritism they favor her over her sister]], since her trophies are more prominently displayed, and Katie notes that they let her go all the way around the world,. On the other hand, one note to Sam says that she's "as bad as (her) sister" when it comes to leaving lights on, and Sam notes that their father often "jokes" about sending Katie to a nunnery when she brings guys home.

* ItsShortSoItSucks: One frequent complaint is how short the game is. It can generally be completed in two hours on a first playthrough, and in potentially ''two minutes'', if you're very quick.

The important point of this trope is the cliche; the rest is natter.

* ClicheStorm: The harshest critics describe the main plot in this way. Some argue that [[spoiler:if they had flipped the gender of one of the characters but left everything else intact, the game would have been bashed as a generic teenager love story with an unhealthy message: Run away for love when you're only 18, and rob your own family to do it.]]
