* AudienceAlienatingPremise: One of the main causes of AngstAversion, it's the story of a boy who goes to a magical fantasy world in hopes of going on an adventure and becoming a hero, only to end up on a long downward spiral of loneliness, paranoia, betrayal, and death, and the audience is frequently reminded [[TheHeroDies Brolli will die]].
** There's another portion of the audience who are fine with this, saying Brolli deserves to die for being shallow and ignorant. However, approaching the halfway point, we find out the characters are more than they appear to be and some of the events didn't really happen the way we thought, as well as bringing up some rather obscure Touhou facts [[AllThereInTheManual only found in the source books]], showing the audience [[TakeThatAudience they're no better]].

** A subversion of sorts: visual works inspired by ''Diamond In The Rough'' use the dark, cluttered design for Marisa's house, which is actually based on [[ShownTheirWork ZUN's own drawings of Marisa's house]].
** Nitori [[spoiler:showing her cocky and InsufferableGenius side in wild contrast to her fanon personality]].
* GeniusBonus: A few examples...

** CaptainObviousReveal: Partially subverted. It's obvious from the start [[spoiler:Yukari's meat is made of people]], but the fact that Brolli and the other Gappies (along with [[MisaimedFandom some audience members]]) don't suspect a thing drives home how much these unsuspecting kids [[spoiler:trust Yukari]]. The partial subversion comes when you realize [[spoiler:it's not just any people: it's every previous Gappy]].
** It doesn't help that [[spoiler: minus the part about the Gappies, Yukari gapping in humans for food for the Youkai]] is canon.
* MisaimedFandom: "Fans" who haven't seen the full movie wish they were in Brolli's place. While many who have seen the full movie and its DownerEnding changed their minds, there are also "fans" who have seen Diamond In The Rough in its entirety and missed the point completely...

The finale of Episode 13 establishes that [[spoiler:the ''real'' Flandre is nothing like homicidal maniac fanon Flandre: she may be immature and destructive, but she's not ''that'' violent, and she ''does'' follow Spell Card Rules]]. Despite trying to remain as faithful to canon as possible, some fans decry the ending as [[spoiler:Flandre]] [[IdiotBall conveniently]] [[ForgotAboutHisPowers forgetting her powers]] for the sake of [[WhamEpisode shocking audiences]], citing Spaztique as a hypocrite for preaching canon and then [[RealityIsUnrealistic letting this scene happen]]. [[spoiler:Furthermore, Episode 14 reveals Flandre [[HonorBeforeReason refused to break spell card rules, even when the mansion was at stake]], and then Patchouli [[LampshadeHanging hangs a lampshade on the fact]] vampires in Touhou are exceedingly polite]].

However, later games show that some of these outsiders are becoming corrupt and the residents are planning to kick them out. Coincidence.

** There is now a canon Touhou game (Urban Legend in Limbo) that involves a self-centered high school student coming to Gensokyo and nearly destroying it.
** Hell, LenEn (a ShootEmUp game based on Touhou) portraits a fantasy world and some outsider humans coming to Mugenri (the equivalent of Gensokyo), where they gain powers and resolve incidents. However, later games show that some of these outsiders are becoming corrupt and the residents are planning to kick them out. Coincidence.

** The backstory of ''Hopeless Masquerade'' has the human village hopeless after a series of disastrous incidents, looking to the religious leaders for protection and the future fate of Gensokyo (though it turns out to really be [[spoiler:Hata no Kokoro stealing hope from the village after losing her Mask of Hope]]). [=DitR=] takes place a little while after Ten Desires, and Spaztique has since accepted that ''Diamond In The Rough'' takes places ''directly before'' ''Hopeless Masquerade''. Whether or not this makes the game into [[HeartwarmingMoments a warm and fuzzy experience knowing Gensokyo is returning back to normal]] or [[TearJerker an uncomfortable tearjerker knowing what they all just went through]] is up to the player.

* HolyShitQuotient: According to the Ustream audience, [[GutPunch the incident]] scores extremely high, featuring massive danmaku battles, [[spoiler:virtually every alliance in Gensokyo falling apart as things constantly go FromBadToWorse]], [[spoiler:the [[AnyoneCanDie entire cast getting picked off]] [[KillEmAll one-by-one]]]], and dozens of AwesomeMoments and [[CallBack Call Backs]].

* MartyStu: The Diamondback Beasts. Each one of them, [[IntendedAudienceReaction purposefully]].

** In a few fics, writers tried to find workarounds solely based on Diamond In The Rough's plot instead of story mechanics. For example, instead of Yukari gapping in the main character, it's another character, using the excuse, "Yukari didn't gap him in, so he's not a [[MartyStu Gappy Stu]]!" These characters then [[MartyStu proceed to woo all of the women in Gensokyo and become the big hero with no meaningful conflict to stop them]].
** Some fans who did understand Diamond In The Rough have adamantly attacked any sort of outsider main character as being a MartyStu, even though Spaztique has said multiple times that a Gappy is not necessarily a Stu, and a Stu doesn't have to be a Gappy.
