* {{Woolseyism}}: In the Yakuza arc, as opposed to the rest of the anime dubbed in English, Rock still speaks Japanese. This works for the dub's favor, since it's meant to be Rock acting as a TranslatorBuddy for Balalaika, since they're working with Japanese criminals, and Japanese is Rock's native tongue.

** Also in the Greenback Jane arc, Guy Russell. For all of his bluster, he was actually pretty competent and wound up being the last member of the CarnivalOfKillers who boarded the Lagoon Company's boat to survive. He even had the foresight to stay out of sight and sneak off to the engine room to smash it up and hopefully strand them out in the water. Eda caught him in the act, but didn't seem particularly eager to kill him even as she held him at gunpoint. Then he started rambling about how he thought he had met her before in the US. Eda began repeatedly demanding that he shut up while still holding him at gunpoint. Had he just stopped talking and backed off, he probably could have gotten out of the whole ordeal alive. Instead, [[spoiler:he ignored Eda's warnings, kept rambling, and figured out that she was a CIA operative while at gunpoint, and was shot dead by Eda for his trouble.]]

* AudienceAlienatingPremise: One of the main ideas of the manga is the idea that a person must adapt to the environment in order to survive, even if it requires him to be cruel and cynical. In support of this, whenever Rock tries to be sympathetic or peaceful, story punishes him.

** Shane Caxton refuses to give his men order to shoot Roberta when she attacks them. This is supposed to be a magnanimous gesture on his part: Feeling responsible for the death of Garcia's father, he intends to protect the life of another person Garcia cares about. As a military commander, he is responsible for the lives of his men; neglectfully throwing away their lives like that is a legitimate cause for disobedience, if not outright mutiny. Furthermore, if all he wants to do is redeem himself in Garcia's eyes, then he could and should have just give up ''only'' himself. There is no need to involve his men.
** Averted in the OVA adaptation, where Caxton doesn't do this and permits Grey Fox to defend itself. [[spoiler:This alters the ending a fair bit, reducing Grey Fox's casualties and also crippling Roberta.]]

I honestly feel like this is kind of arguable. Yes, Black Lagoon is edgy as all hell, but it's always a pretty defanged edge; the Hansel and Gretel arc is the absolute worst the series gets, content-wise, and still isn't nearly as bad as it could be. With some of the stuff I've read in YA fiction, I'm pretty comfortable calling Black Lagoon a teen-friendly series.

* MisaimedMarketing: Although the anime contains a very large amount of violence and cruelty, including even the killing of children in the second season (who in themselves are crazy incestuous maniacs), in some countries, its localization was sold as a series for youth and adolescents.

* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: It's essentially a gloriously violent throwback to RatedMForManly 80s (well, technically 90s) action movies The series is already well regarded in everything but name, and three out of the four main protagonists are American, so it's native Japan but it also has a no-brainer that this show is beloved stateside. It doesn't hurt at all that very sizable following in the English dub [[SugarWiki/SuperlativeDubbing kicks serious ass]].West, especially in American.
