* CounterpartComparison: Ladd Russo is frequently compared to ComicBook/TheJoker. Given the fact that both are lunatics with a love of killing, a jovial demeanor and always sporting a maniacal grin, as well as essentially being the poster boys for BrightIsNotGood, this isn't surprising.

He's an orphan who, through many trials, years of training and sheer determination, becomes one of the deadliest men alive. Claire believes that since accepting that the world revolves around him, he can never be killed, which mirrors Batman's memetic reputation for always winning and never staying dead.

* AllThereIsToKnowAboutTheCryingGame: It's pretty much impossible to talk about Claire Stanfield without spoiling a hell of a lot of the 1931/Grand Punk Railroad arc. Of course, he's also one of the most popular characters in the series, and the Railroad arc is one of the most popular arcs, so nearly any conversation on ''Baccano!'' invariably ''will'' result in massive spoilers. The fandom usually refers to him as [[spoiler:The Young Conductor]] before his reveal, and treats him like two different characters before and after.

* TheScrappy: [[{{Jerkass}} Dallas]] and [[TheIngenue Eve]] are among the least popular characters in the cast. To be fair though, Dallas at least seems to be [[IntendedAudienceReaction intentionally unlikeable]]. With Eve, most fans tend to just find her boring.

* DracoInLeatherPants: [[BigBad Fermet]] and [[MadScientist Huey]] are baffling examples; there exist a small but loud fraction of the fanbase who perceive Fermet's [[TortureTechnician abuse]] as his [[{{Yandere}} twisted]] way of showing "love" to [[{{Lolicon}} Czeslaw]] (ignoring the fact that Czes learned a long time ago that Fermet never truly cared about him and [[ForTheEvulz only took enjoyment in seeing him in pain]]), and who insist that Huey is at least a tiny bit regretful about his treatment of his daughters, even though it's made abundantly clear that he doesn't care about either of them, would off them both in a second, and views them as nothing but experiments - ''that failed''.

* GodModeSue: Surprisingly averted with Claire. The writer has stated that the reason he doesn't get his own plot line is because of how easily he could overtake the entire series.

* UnpopularPopularCharacter: Ladd is not very well liked by most of the cast in Baccano [[AxCrazy for good]] [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverKill reason]]. Even his own family thinks he's out of his gourd, and they're TheMafia. Most viewers of Baccano though categorize him as CrazyAwesome and [[WordOfGod Narita]] admits that Ladd is his favorite character.

* MemeticMolester: Fermet.

** [[BigBad Fermet]], another of the original immortals, was the caretaker of the immortal child Czeslaw Meyer. However, once they were immortal, Fermet revealed his true colors as a vicious {{sadist}} who [[WouldHurtAChild tortured Czeslaw]] for years and years, with new, inventive ways, ranging from throwing him into a roaring fireplace, to making him bathe in acid. The excuse was to [[ForScience test the limits of immortality]]. The truth was simply sadism. Then we find out that he's the reason why [[ReligionOfEvil SAMPLE]], a cult whose members tortures children in the hope that the children will receive any pain directed at themselves, really spread across the world. He also killed [[MadScientist Huey]]'s wife Monica, giving [[TheSociopath Huey]] his StartOfDarkness. To top it off, he sets things up so that Niki, a woman who loved him and who was a close friend of Huey and Elmer, would be killed[[note]]or horribly scarred, as it turns out[[/note]], and then tells Elmer and Huey that their bomb did it just to see the pain on their faces. He does all of this out of [[ForTheEvulz pure sadism and finds it fun]]. He's even more dangerous than Szilard, because as the latter may enjoy killing and devouring others, he at least doesn't kill without [[PragmaticVillainy some sort of practical reason]] (even if that reason is simply because his victim has something he wants). Fermet will murder and betray everyone [[ForTheEvulz just for fun]], even the people who love him. ''Especially'' the people who love him.

** [[TheAssimilator Szilard Quates]] the [[ElderlyImmortal immortal]] MadScientist and alchemist, believes in [[ForScience knowledge being the most important commodity in the world]], and to that end [[ImmortalityImmorality devours immortals for their knowledge]]. After becoming immortal, Szilard devoured the brother of the immortals' leader before being driven away. Szilard creates ArtificialHuman homunculi to serve him, abusing them mentally and physically. He also developed his own immortal potion that he feeds to intelligent people before devouring them to amass their knowledge without working for it. He isn't above straight up murder for his purposes either. It's mentioned at one point he finds no greater joy than in [[ImAHumanitarian devouring others]].
