In ''Another Junk Railroad'' featured a conversation between Firo and a concerned Berga that heavily implies that Firo has a ParalyzingFearOfSexuality... because [[spoiler: he was ''[[AttemptedRape almost raped]]'' when he was younger.]]

* ItWasHisSled: [[spoiler:Claire Stanfield]] is supposed to be a ''secret'' character. The fact that he exists is only the beginning. If you've been reading this page, it's likely you know everything about him at this point.

* BaseBreaker: Isaac and Miria. Hilarious PluckyComicRelief duo? Or annoying scrappies who get too much screentime?

** Graham Spector, just as CrazyAwesome as Ladd and Claire, or a lame attempt to copy them who plays far too large a role in the OVAs?

* {{Moe}}: Jacuzzi, a cute young man who cries and apologises a lot, is a total softy, and is very nice to everyone.

* UnpopularPopularCharacter: Ladd is not very well liked by most of the cast in Baccano [[AxCrazy for good]] [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverKill reason]]. Even his own family think's he's out of his gourd, and they're TheMafia. Most viewers of Baccano though categorize him as CrazyAwesome and [[WordOfGod Narita]] admits that Ladd is his favorite character.

* NightmareFuel:
** Every time Fermet is mentioned by Czes is this. The fact that Fermet practically ''oozes'' with pederast vibes makes it worse.
** Any scene with the Rail Tracer until TheReveal, and plenty more afterward too.
** Even though he kinda deserved it, it's still disturbing when [[spoiler:Claire tortures Czes after he finds out Czes wants to kill every one in the train. What makes it worse is, due to him being immortal, Czes looks like a little kid.]]
** When Mary is hiding in the closet, she accidentally knocks over a broom, letting one of Ladd's goon know where she is. We see Mary in the closet, listening as he gets closer and closer. He opens the door and...

*** For even more nightmare fuel, the way he talks implies that he wants to ''rape'' her. [[spoiler: Thank God for Chane.]]
** [[YouWillBeAssimilated Szilard]] [[EvilOldFolks Quates]]. Period.
** Nice's accident. Especially in the dub.
** [[ReligionOfEvil SAMPLE.]] [[spoiler: They torture children (examples being Elmer and Illnes) for religious purposes and attempt to crash Exit and Entrace into each other]]

* JerkassWoobie: Huey Laforet. While in the present, he's a complete and utter [[TheSociopath sociopath]], [[spoiler:it's revealed that he became this way after he lost everything he cared about, one by one. [[UsedToBeASweetKid He even was a normal kid until his entire village was wiped out by fake inquisitors[[note]]actually members of [[ReligionOfEvil SAMPLE]][[/note]] when they all sold each other out, accusing each other of false crime so that the torture they were being subjected to would finally stop. The first one to die being his mother didn't help. Then he finally found someone he could love: his wife Monica. It was only after she was killed by Fermet that he became so cold and uncaring.]] He's not a good person, not by a long shot, but there is a very [[{{Tearjerker}} heartbreaking]] reason for all this.

** Fermet, another of the original immortals, was the caretaker of the immortal child Czeslaw Meyer. However, once they were immortal, Fermet revealed his true colors as a vicious sadist who WouldHurtAChild by torturing Czeslaw for years and years, with new, inventive ways, ranging from throwing him into a roaring fireplace, to making him bathe in acid. The excuse was to test the limits of immortality. The excuse was simply sadism. [[spoiler:Then we find out that he's the reason why [[ReligionOfEvil SAMPLE]][[note]]a cult whose members tortures children in the hope that the children will receive any pain directed at themselves[[/note]] really spread across the world. He also killed Monica, giving Huey his StartOfDarkness. And to top it off, he sets things up so that Niki, a woman who loved him and who was also a close friend of Huey and Elmer, would be killed[[note]]or horribly scarred, as it turns out[[/note]], and then tells Elmer and Huey that it was their bomb that did it just to see the pain on their faces.]] And why does he do all of this? [[ForTheEvulz Pure sadism. He finds it fun]].

** Szilard: He will do ''anything'' to gain knowledge and wants to give people immortality just so that he can absorb them and gain their knowledge and memories.
** [[spoiler:Fermet]] is so inhumanly evil that he makes Szilard look like a philanthropist. He's revealed to have crossed the MoralEventHorizon in the 1931 arc when we find out that he tortured Czes for close on 200 years. [[spoiler:Then we find out that he's the reason why [[ReligionOfEvil SAMPLE]][[note]]a cult whose members tortures children in the hope that the children will receive any pain directed at themselves[[/note]] really spread across the world. He also killed Monica, giving Huey his StartOfDarkness. And to top it off, he sets things up so that Niki, a woman who loved him and who was also a close friend of Huey and Elmer, would be killed[[note]]or horribly scarred, as it turns out[[/note]], and then tells Elmer and Huey that it was their bomb that did it just to see the pain on their faces.]] And why does he do all of this? [[ForTheEvulz Pure sadism. He finds it fun]]. Szilard at least had a reason for what he did and he never killed anyone he didn't need to, [[PragmaticVillainy if only for pragmatic reasons]], but this guy will murder and betray everyone just for fun, even the people who love him. ''Especially'' the people who love him.
** [[SmugSnake Goose]] also qualifies, as he was not just willing, but ''planning'' to [[spoiler: let a train full of innocent people die and specifically ''[[WouldHurtAChild kill the senator's nine-year-old daughter]] [[MoralEventHorizon and leave her body on the side of the tracks]],'' just to scare the senator into letting his boss out of jail]]. Unlike Ladd, he's played for absolutely no laughs at all.

* DracoInLeatherPants: Fermet and [[MadScientist Huey]] are baffling examples; there exist a small but loud fraction of the fanbase who perceive Fermet's [[TortureTechnician abuse]] as his [[{{Yandere}} twisted]] way of showing "love" to [[{{Shotacon}} Czeslaw]] (ignoring the fact that Czes learned a long time ago that Fermet never truly cared about him and [[ForTheEvulz only took enjoyment in seeing him in pain]]), and who insist that Huey is at least a tiny bit regretful about his treatment of his daughters, even though it's made abundantly clear that he doesn't care about either of them, would off them both in a second, and views them as nothing but experiments - ''that failed''.

** [[spoiler:Fermet]] and Szilard. The latter will do ''anything'' to gain knowledge and wants to give people immortality just so that he can absorb them and gain their knowledge and memories. The other, upon gaining [[HealingFactor regenerative immortality]], killed a similarly immortal child repeatedly in incredibly painful ways for an unknown number of years. His excuse for doing this is that they need to learn the limits of their immortality and he's testing to see if there's a level of damage they can't recover from. The real reason is just sadism.

* TearJerker:
** Ladd's [[spoiler:rescue of Lua on top of the train.]]
** Ennis breaking down in tears after meeting Isaac and Miria for the first time. The novels drive it home by stating that this was the first time she had ever genuinely smiled or cried.
** A couple different times with Czes; when [[spoiler:he's rescued by the magnificent duo and they tell him he's a good boy,]] and when [[spoiler:he is reunited with Maiza.]]
** The ending theme. It will bring tears to your eyes, no matter how lighthearted the series is.
** Nice accidentally blowing herself up. Becomes even more heartbreaking [[FridgeHorror when you realize]] that she was "eight" at the time.
*** It gets especially tear jerky when [[spoiler:Jacuzzi shows up with a gaudy tattoo on his face so his face will stand out like Nice's (which is now permanently scarred) and she won't feel so alone. And then they both cry; Nice because she's so moved, and Jacuzzi because that's just what he does.]]
** The end of [[spoiler: Bullet Garden when Illness]] breaks down after [[spoiler: hearing a hymn of SAMPLE over the phone]]
** [[spoiler: Monica]]’s death at the end of 1710. [[spoiler: The fact that she [[GoOutWithASmile goes out with a smile]] after a huge HopeSpot makes it all the worse]].
