** The premise of the show isn't the first time someone did a cartoon [[WesternAnimation/TimeSquad that mixed a warped view on history with rampant male homosexual undertones]] ([[spoiler:though ''Time Squad'' was not as popular as ''Axis Powers Hetalia'' -- at least not until after the former show got canceled]]).

* FandomRivalry: For some reason, with ''Webcomic/{{Homestuck}}''. The sane people on either side have absolutely no idea why or how; they're not even in the same genre or medium! This interpretation of the bizarreness of the rivalry and the desire to move past it has given birth to such oddities as [[ActorShipping shipping creators]] Creator/HidekazHimaruya and Creator/AndrewHussie. Eventually, it seems the two fandoms have [[FriendlyFandoms become friends]].
** A bit more understandable when one considers the fact that they were both web-based creations that became immensely popular incredibly quickly at around the same time; overwhelming amounts of fanworks for both began around 2009, and the people who'd begin butting heads were therewith.
** Lately this has also become the case with ''Webcomic/{{Polandball}}'', because of similar premises, and both fandoms accuse each other of being either insensitive or historically inaccurate. Unlike Hetalia, Polandball was not created by a single author. Also unlike in the case with Homestuck, this rivalry seems to be not cooling down any time soon.

** The [=FPCs=] also tend to vary [[MexicansLoveSpeedyGonzales depending on the fandom/country]]: England/Japan is the runaway FPC in Japanese fandom and Russia/China is hugely popular in the Russian and Chinese fandom, for example.

* FunnyAneurysmMoment: The sketch about Ukraine feeling torn between West and East is alot less funny after the RealLife Russian invasion.

* SecondLove: Arguably for [[{{Fanon}} some fans]], what [[{{Tsundere}} Norway]] is to [[LoveMartyr Sweden]] after UsefulNotes/TheNapoleonicWars, [[ArrangedMarriage leading up to their third personal union.]] Although the union is sometimes interpreted as either AMatchMadeInStockholm (technically Moss, Norway) or NoAccountingForTaste. However, Sweden is still consistently shown with Finland more often than anyone else in the modern day strips, making this one pure {{fanon}} speculation.
** A more canon-supported example is Germany for Italy, who used to be in love with the Holy Roman Empire. To make things even more interesting, there are hints that [[spoiler:Germany and the Holy Roman Empire may actually be the same person]].

** There are even fans who take offense to a ''[[VocalMinority Visible Minority]]'' of the Japanese fandom warping his character and cite this as a reason to not like him, forgetting that not only is that an absurd reason to hate the character himself (is it the ''character'' Japan's fault that his fandom likes warping his canon personality?) but that the Western fandom, or rather, American and Canadian fans do the ''[[HypocriticalFandom exact same thing]]'' to America and Canada.

** Or Japan, who was ''hated'' by people who called him a UsefulNotes/MisplacedNationalism-fueled character that was ruining the anime after every episode he appeared in. Or took personal offense about him being as beloved in Japanese fandom [[HypocriticalFandom as Canada was in Western fandom]]. Or claimed that him not being depicted as a monster or his UsefulNotes/ImperialJapan atrocities not being portrayed in graphic detail in a series focused on the lighthearted side of history meant that Himaruya was "trivializing" history. It was mainly limited to a VocalMinority, but they kept on finding the stupidest reasons to bash him; there was even a post on the Hetalia comm that bashed Japan as a "shojo harem manga heroine" to promote ''Turkey/Poland''. Fortunately, like with Korea, the hate has [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap quieted down over time]], probably because Japan having a minor or supporting role at best in the comics means that the VocalMinority can't call him a SpotlightStealingSquad by any stretch of the imagination.

** South Italians that listen to the [[ImageSong Buono Tomato]] [[EarWorm song]] can immediately understand that it's a Tarantella, a south Italian dance that mimics the effects of chorea (an abnormal involuntary movement disorder). In the comics, Romano suffered from that disease when he was young...see? Everything in Hetalia has a reason!

Which makes sense considering the first part of the song is about how "swan lake has frozen over" and that it's cold, and that he hates being cold.

** The ending theme, Hatafutte Parade.
** From the movie we now have "World Ondo," which is absolutely adorable in that it has all of the main eight singing together.

** And then there's China. No matter how hard he tries, no one ever seems to respect him. Even his allies pick on him and order him around. His adopted Japan stabbed him in the back for seemingly no reason!
** Little England crying about how lonely he is, or a grown-up England getting his heart trampled on by America... The fact that he is mocked, ridiculed and disrespected by nearly everyone doesn't help.
** Oh, ''Lithuania''. The fact that Lithuania is the suicide capital of the world bodes ill for his future, to be sure.
** [[TeamMom Ukraine.]] She [[GagBoobs aches constantly]], her economy is [[PerpetualPoverty in shambles]], she has a hard time [[ShrinkingViolet making friends]], and she's [[NaiveEverygirl so kind]] that she often winds up [[TheChewToy picked on for it]]. No wonder she's always crying.
** Italy, mostly due to his own incompetence (even the title says so!) but that doesn't make him any less sympathetic.
*** Doubly so in his Chibitalia days. His loving Grandpa Rome falls/vanishes, leaving Italy and his brother to be picked on by stronger nations. Italy is finally captured by Austria and forced to be a servant, while Romano is sent to live with Spain. Then, just as Italy starts to warm up to Holy Roman Empire (who he'd previously been terrified of), the HRE leaves to enter a war. Italy's saddened by this, remembering how hurt his grandfather was after a life of battles, but promises to wait for Holy Roman Empire to come back. Except he never does. [[spoiler:And while it looks like it's possible that he survived to be present-day Germany, Germany still can't remember anything so Italy still thinks his first love is dead.]]
** In the crazy world of Hetalia, [[OnlySaneMan Germany]] was given [[BlessedWithSuck the blessing of sanity]]. His [[TheWoobie woobieness]] is especially prominent in [[spoiler: the Valentine's Day strip]].
** Little Romano was a inferiority-complex stricken kid [[ParentalAbandonment whose grandfather abandoned]] [[ParentalFavoritism him in favor of his younger brother]], who was deathly worried that Spain and France only wanted him for his grandfather's inheritance and that he had nothing to offer, [[TheUnfavourite and is often disliked in favor of his much-loved younger brother]]. On the other hand, it has also led to some of his fangirls missing the point and [[RonTheDeathEater ferociously bashing North Italy because of this]] while painting Romano as a flawless angel, when in canon North Italy cares for his brother and tries to help him but gets shot down more than once. Considering Romano's HairTriggerTemper and PerpetualFrowner traits, he's more of a JerkassWoobie: very sympathetic, yeah, but NotSoAboveItAll.

* AmericansHateTingle: While there are definitely Western fans who like Japan, there are also a sizable number of fans who are 'meh' about him at best and brand him as an ExtremeDoormat, FlatCharacter, and/or even the series' CreatorsPet at worst due to his [[TheStoic relatively stoic]] [[InscrutableOriental personality]] and him representing the author's homeland which automatically makes him the character most vulnerable to Mary Sue accusations.
** There are even fans who take offense to a ''[[VocalMinority Visible Minority]]'' of the Japanese fandom turning him into a Possession Sue and cite this as a reason to not like him, forgetting that not only is that an absurd reason to hate the character himself (is it the ''character'' Japan's fault that his fandom likes warping his canon personality?) but that the Western fandom, or rather, American and Canadian fans do the ''[[HypocriticalFandom exact same thing]]'' to America and Canada.

** About all of the "Marukaite Chikyuu" covers but [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPu4p_qan-s Japan's]] is a standout. The boy's voice is so smooth it spreads like butter.

** Russia is a...unique character, to say the least. He is portrayed as much more flawed than the other characters, especially in earlier strips. Therefore, fans' viewpoints on him tend to be polarizing. And let's not get started on his many fanon portrayals...

His ego could choke a horse, he's a boundlessly ambitious psychotic punk who delights in mischief, and yet caves at the sight of cute things... a freak among freaks, and a [[EnsembleDarkhorse fan favorite]]. Plus, he, Spain and France together form a posse often dubbed the 'Bad Touch Trio', 'The {{Badass}} Trio', or 'The Bad Friends Trio.' [[BadIsGoodAndGoodIsBad They're just a trio of Badness]].

* MemeticBadass / MemeticMolester Although it's his unrepentant badassness that makes him so popular, his fandom's {{meme|ticMutation}}s are even scarier: 'Prussia will occupy/seize your vital regions' and 'Prussia is [[GagPenis 5 METERS LONG]]!'. In fact, Prussia is said to run around [[ImageBoard 4chan]] trying to seize the vital regions of the various boards. He even took over the main site for an April Fool's event. It may be rubbing off onto the actual anime, he acts very scarily in the below strip in the anime.
