* CreatorsPet: All the original characters created specifically for the title are accused of this; not so much as in that they're ''hated'' (well, some are hated) but as they take away attention from the established characters. Apex and Anachronism (frequently accused of being an AuthorAvatar) get this accusation a lot.
** Cammi is also accused of this, she's actually pretty popular but she does receive more focus in both ''Arena'' and ''Undercover'' and Dennis Hopeless has written that he loves writing her.

* CreatorsPet: Apex is this in the eyes of many critics. She is supposedly one of the smartest people on Murderworld, but she was only successful because everybody she went against grabbed IdiotBall much bigger than the one she's carrying around and because stronger characters have been subjected to TheWorfEffect to make her look cooler. Also, Deathlocket, one of series initial [[EnsembleDarkhorse Ensemble Darkhorses]] has been turned into satellite character, that only exist to make Apex look that much more interesting. Apex is also the only character narrative two issues, while some established characters (like [[spoiler: Mettle, Red Raven and Juston]]) haven't got a single one before they died.
** Cammi is another one - while nobody denies she is an experienced survivalist and {{Badass}}, she is also set up more prominently than others.
** Other Braddock Academy kids, especially Cullen Bloodstone and Anachronism, are this to certain point too, because, with exception of Cammi, other characters rarely get a chance to show any initiative and are constantly DemotedToExtra and subjected to WorfEffect to make them look better.
** And of course Arcade is one too, being portrayed as genius who managed to outsmart everybody in the MarvelUniverse to have his sick game run for a month without anybody noticing, while in reality his plan worked only because everybody who could stop him have been either handled IdiotBall or written as uncaring jerks. He is supposedly a clever mastermind who manipulated the cast into fighting each other to death for his amusement, while in reality he needs to make one ham-fisted interference after another to try make kids play his game, all of them failed.
** And then there's Ms. Coriander. Despite her short appearance in the book, everything happened only because she provided Arcade with all that technology. Technology that seems to surpass everything seen before, as the kids can't be found by technological or even magical means, and said technology basically makes Arcade be pretty much omnipotent. The fact that this never before seen woman's technology is so incredibly advanced that it makes everybody look useless, IdiotBall or not, has been called out as preposterous.

* InternetBackdraft: Reviews are good to neutral to the series, readers are not so kind. It certainly has its fans, but it is far better known for sparking ire than anything else. Those positive reviews usually have to spend a paragraph or more justifying or defending itself from the fans who have been angered by ''Arena''.

* MisaimedFandom: If rumored WordOfSaintPaul is to be true, Dennis Hopeless assumed fans will see Arcade as pathetic, incompetent loser who got DrunkWithPower and he isn't very happy about the fact most of the fans see him as MagnificentBastard and people who do see him as a moron tend to be vocal critics and haters of the series. [[spoiler: This, if true, would make his potrayal and death in the sequel a middle finger towards the fans.]]

* ScapegoatCreator: Dennis Hopeless is the detractors' resident punching bag...how bad is it? Let's put it this way: Hopeless is only the ''writer'' on the series and he's blamed for ''artist's'' decisions. And it extends to everything he's written since.

* VocalMinority: There was initial outrage at the book's announcement, but most of that has quelled as Hopeless and Marvel have said that the reception has been more positive than negative as the months went by. Not that you could ''tell'', considering the detractors of the book are loud and present and trash the book everywhere (even on this very wiki) and Dennis Hopeless to the point of bashing his later works.

* ToughActToFollow: ''Avengers Arena'' is a direct follow-up to ''Comicbook/AvengersAcademy'', and uses five of those characters in the main cast. It also pulls characters from ''ComicBook/{{Runaways}}'' and ''Sentinel'' and {{Annihilation}} cosmic event, series with much critical acclaim and all with their own fanbases who look at ''Arena'' as being a disappointing follow-up.

* FanHater: Some of the more fervent Arena haters are particularly opposed to anyone liking the series due to the premise. Not to mention that some Arena fans to dish it out as well.

* DontLikeDontRead: A common defense used by proponents to attack detractors. Some detractors don't, but still find out about events within it even without looking for it.

* UnfortunateImplications: [[spoiler:Mettle, who's half-black and the only black character in the book, [[BlackDudeDiesFirst is the first person killed]].]]

* ComplainingAboutShowsYouDontWatch: There was a change.org petition demanding the cancellation of the series before there were any ''previews''. Some people who don't follow the series and only get news on big deaths judge it right away as well.
** Many detractors criticize the book calling it a "meat-grinder" and {{gorn}}, despite most of the deaths being obscured by shadow (save for [[spoiler: Nico's death]]), and the series being more about CharacterDevelopment and CharacterFocus which is evident if one has actually read it, [[spoiler: not to mention that the most of the kids didn't even turn on each other and start killing until the very end of the first run.]]

* TooCoolToLive: [[spoiler:Mettle and Darkhawk.]]

* TheScrappy: This comic basically turned Arcade into one of Marvel Universe's biggest Scrappies, especially amongst ''Runaways'', ''Avengers Academy'', and ''Darkhawk'' fans since he's the cause of any characters getting a [[DroppedABridgeOnThem bridge dropped on them]].

* TooCoolToLive: [[spoiler:Mettle.]]

* IdiotPlot: Let's face it, the entire story relies on it's cast having the same level of intelligence of a brick. The very premise just shows how much of a moron Arcade is; he thinks this will earn the respect of his fellow supervillains despite the fact that a.) he's going after amateurs and kids instead of big-name respected heroes and b.) people who harm children tend to be viewed with disgust [[EveryoneHasStandards by other criminals]] and rarely last long in prison.
** This is a common detractor argument, and it is worth pointing out that it is never established anywhere in the MarvelUniverse that a majority of the supervillains WouldntHurtaChild (and many have done so). Not to mention in Comicbook/AvengersUndercover, it was shown that their were people willing to play Avengers Arena in Bagalia.

* HateDumb: There are people who dislike the series for valid reasons. Then there's the group who keep up persistent hate against the book and the writer to the point of completely twisting events and hating the fans of the series.
** They got very angry when a random {{Jerkass}} side character in ''Comicbook/AvengersUndercover'' was spouting off criticism of Hazmat and the haters thought it was Hopeless taking a shot at them (never mind that it ''wasn't''). [[HypocriticalFandom Keep in mind that they call Hopeless every name in the book and harshly criticize his style]].

** [[spoiler: Juston's]] death is a lot more tragic if you read [[spoiler: the Avengers Academy arc during Comicbook/{{Avengers Vs X-Men}} where his father begs him to come home since he doesn't have any powers and could get hurt. If that wasn't terrible enough, the only reason why he attended the academy was to keep his friend Sentinel, and now both are dead.]]

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Another fear the series fosters, as characters killed in the series may never be revived again. More to the point, the character of Red Raven who was brought out of obscurity [[spoiler: only to be killed unceremoniously in the second issue, no lines spoken. Dennis Hopeless said he hoped to give her a focus issue, but there wasn't enough time allotted for it.]]

* ExecutiveMeddling: If rumored WordOfSaintPaul is to be belived, there were multiple instances of it through the series, that might be responsible for some of the plot holes. According to it, some of the characters, like X-23, were pretty much forced into the plot by the editorial.

** And then there's Ms. Coriander. Despite her short appearance in the book, everything happened only because she provided Arcade with all that technology. Technology that seems to surpass everything seen before, as the kids can't be find by technological or even magical means. The fact that this never before seen woman's technology is so incredibly advanced that it makes everybody look useless, IdiotBall or not, has been called out as preposterous.

** Seems to be Arcade's belief in-universe, as the entire impetus for the entire scheme was to make himself seem more impressive to the rest of the supervillain community. Ignoring that when the superheroes find out he'll be public enemy number one, he seems not to understand that criminals of all kinds also usually have a low opinion of people who hurt kids.

* RootingForTheEmpire: Several fans are rooting for Apex to win or at least survive. Which is impressive seeing she is all to willing to play Arcade's game.
