* AngstWhatAngst: Detective Badd doesn't emote much over Byrne Faraday's death, and is even willing to openly discuss the possibility that Faraday might have murdered Rell before being killed. * BestLevelEver: "Turnabout Reminiscence" is the most liked cases from this game. It has [[spoiler:Calisto Yew]] who has a fun (if, admittedly, slightly annoying) gimmick, a fun personality, a very clever plan, and is by far the best villain in the game. It also features Detective Badd, who is regarded as one of the most badass characters in the franchise and is a widely beloved character in general. It also shows how Edgeworth and Gumshoe first meet, shows Franziska and Edgeworth’s sibling-like relationship, has a small but nice cameo from Manfred von Karma, and it has a cross-examination with the judge, which is as fun as it sounds.
* CatharsisFactor: Due to Larry's sheer unhelpfulness in ''Turnabout Ablaze'', if the player presents any evidence to him that doesn't result in a specific reaction from him, it leads to a conversation in which Franziska whips him until he's knocked out, while Edgeworth approves of it. * EnsembleDarkHorse:
** Cammy Meele is a surprisingly popular character for a character who only appears in a single, short case, owing to her [[MsFanservice very attractive]] design and [[spoiler:being a surprisingly competent and intelligent killer, putting together a solid plan to cover a spur killing in minutes after committing it, and only failing because of something she couldn't have planned for. That she desperately pleads that she didn't mean to commit the murder also earns her a decent amount of sympathy from fans, especially in a game criticized for its killers lacking depth]].
** Colias Palaeno is rather well-liked due to being genuinely helpful and cooperative to Edgeworth's investigation, as well just being a NiceGuy. his hilariously unsubtle MeaningfulName even by victim standards and his complete lack of other discernable characteristics.

* {{Narm}}:
** In the flashback case in the first game, Edgeworth's use of logic as [[BadassNormal his special ability]] causes this a couple of times. First, it's introduced as a rare and little-known concept (even if he's such a cold and distant mentor talking to Edgeworth and Franziska Gumshoe at the time, it's hard to imagine him being totally unfamiliar with it). Then, in the third case, Shi-Long Lang decries the very notion of using logic to determine the perpetrator of a crime, which just makes him look like a dimwitted CowboyCop even though he then proves himself to be an intellectual match for Edgeworth.
** What does the BigBad say right before the scene he breaks down in? [[spoiler:''A Scooby-Doo reference.'' Cause nothing is more threatening than a Scooby-Doo villain.]] His objection soundclip is also worth nothing. AHBJEKSHAWN!
** During the final case, [[spoiler:a certain cart]] is an important piece of evidence. Except the "wide shot" view of it is a hastily-drawn 2D profile sprite
that it leads to some hilarious moments, especially when interacting with doesn't quite match the more colorful Kay Faraday and Dick Gumshoe.
** In the second
game's flashback case, he [[spoiler:is even someone who can be cross-examined, leading art style, with a 3D shadow under it. No wonder it's mostly hidden out of view or under the textboxes.
* TheScrappy: One of the game's biggest problems is that the villains, aside from [[spoiler:Shih-na]] and
to a brief but some extent [[spoiler:Cammy Meele]], are incredibly tense confrontation.underwhelming:
** [[spoiler:BigBad Quercus Alba, widely considered the ''worst'' main villain in the entire franchise. Besides his infamously overlong final confrontation, many fans consider him a very weak character due to his lack of development. He has very little if any screentime before being revealed as the BigBad of the game (so much so that Edgeworth never has an extended conversation with him), preventing there from being much if any investment in stopping him, and no ties to the backstory or characters other than being the leader of the smuggling ring, making him look like a GenericDoomsdayVillain. His personality is also almost entirely defined by his arrogance, making him very one-note in terms of personality, and he ''constantly'' hides behind his extraterritorial rights throughout the confrontation with him to where it comes off as immensely repetitive and unintimidating. Quite a few fans have been left wishing Yew/Shih-na was the villain instead.
]]
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Franziska ** [[spoiler:Lance Amano]] is a strong contender for those one of the worst villains in the franchise. His plan to defraud his father is insanely stupid, he's a glaringly obvious culprit, and he's a whiny and obnoxious idiot who weren't swayed doesn't even put up that good of a fight.
** Jacques Portsman isn't ''as'' disliked as the aforementioned examples but he's still a very weak opponent even
by her role in StarterVillain standards. He's yet another AmoralAttorney who has no motives, backstory, or character depth other than just being corrupt for the sake of being corrupt. Add to that his obnoxious gimmick of constantly throwing sports metaphors into his dialogue, his even more obnoxious habit of loudly taking his jacket on and off, and the opening cutscene outright showing him as the murderer (something that ''Trials & Tribulations'', ''Apollo Justice'' and Tribulations''. The first game has ''The Great Ace Attorney'' duology have avoided doing), he ends up feeling like an annoyance that you just want to get out of the way as soon as possible.
** While not a villain, Lauren is another hated character by fans, owing to
her very concerned for Larry's son gimmick of obsessing over love being incredibly irritating and one-note, her unhelpfulness in the case as a whole, and her continued loyalty to her boyfriend Lance despite it being never explained why on earth she even likes the whiny {{Jerkass}}. [[spoiler:That she [[KarmaHoudini gets off almost completely scot-free]] (although [[ItMakesSenseInContext it turns out she is implied to be have spent time in the detention center) despite actively taking part in a doll]]), fraud scheme and extremely sympathetic and even downright kind to Kay after [[spoiler: she loses her father]]. * ShipsThatPassInTheNight: Sebastian x Kay SoOkayItsAverage: While not considered bad, the game is widely considered a surprisingly popular pairing, owing strong contender for the weakest game in the franchise. Common complaints are the thin story that despite attempting to their similar ages be serialized comes off more as an ExcusePlot and plays up AnachronicOrder to such an extent that it can become difficult to follow, Edgeworth being a PinballProtagonist whose only role as understudies for Edgeworth. being Sebastian accusing advertised as the new heroine and rival respectively, Kay and Lang don't even appear in the game until the third case of five, and are reduced to a supporting role and a cameo in the WholeEpisodeFlashback, giving them barely half the game to fill their designated roles. Kay especially gets hit with this hard, as despite the Yatagarasu being a central plot arc, she is around for almost none of it [[spoiler:culminating in her doing next to ''nothing'' during the confrontation with Shih-na that concludes the plotline other than getting taken hostage, and then spends the remainder of murder.

** Allebahst and Babahl used to be one country, Cohdopia, and the final case makes a point of this many times. But what exactly caused Cohdopia to split apart? Have fun with that mystery, because [[NoodleIncident the game never explains why]].
** The fourth case takes place at the very beginning of Edgeworth's prosecution career, just months before his appearance in the third game's own flashback case, "Turnabout Beginnings". Combined with the presence of both Manfred and Franziska von Karma, this provides an opportunity for the game to contrast the present-day Edgeworth's post-CharacterDevelopment self with his much more ruthless and dishonest younger self, and yet throughout the episode, Edgeworth's behavior is simply shown as virtually identical to that of his older self, without so much as a hint of the "[[AmoralAttorney Demon Prosecutor]]" on display.

Except the "wide shot" view of it is a hastily-drawn 2D profile sprite that doesn't quite match the game's art style, with a 3D shadow under it. No wonder it's mostly hidden out of view or under the textboxes.
* TheScrappy: One of the game's biggest problems is that the villains, aside from [[spoiler:Shih-na]] and to some extent [[spoiler:Cammy Meele]], are incredibly underwhelming:
Quite a few fans have been left wishing Yew/Shih-na was the villain instead.]]
** [[spoiler:Lance Amano]] is a strong contender for one of the worst villains in the franchise. His plan to defraud his father is insanely stupid, he's a glaringly obvious culprit, and he's a whiny and obnoxious idiot who doesn't even put up that good of a fight.
** Jacques Portsman isn't ''as'' disliked as the aforementioned examples but he's still a very weak opponent even by StarterVillain standards. He's yet another AmoralAttorney who has no motives, backstory, or character depth other than just being corrupt for the sake of being corrupt. Add to that his obnoxious gimmick of constantly throwing sports metaphors into his dialogue, his even more obnoxious habit of loudly taking his jacket on and off, and the opening cutscene outright showing him as the murderer (something that ''Trials & Tribulations'', ''Apollo Justice'' and ''The Great Ace Attorney'' duology have avoided doing), he ends up feeling like an annoyance that you just want to get out of the way as soon as possible.
** While not a villain, Lauren is another hated character by fans, owing to her gimmick of obsessing over love being incredibly irritating and one-note, her unhelpfulness in the case as a whole, and her continued loyalty to her boyfriend Lance despite it being never explained why on earth she even likes the whiny {{Jerkass}}. [[spoiler:That she [[KarmaHoudini gets off almost completely scot-free]] (although she is implied to have spent time in the detention center) despite actively taking part in a fraud scheme and displaying no guilt over it does not help.]]
* SoOkayItsAverage: While not considered bad, the game is widely considered a strong contender for the weakest game in the franchise. Common complaints are the thin story that despite attempting to be serialized comes off more as an ExcusePlot and plays up AnachronicOrder to such an extent that it can become difficult to follow, Edgeworth being a PinballProtagonist whose only role is to blindly wander into and solve cases, and the general lack of interesting characters and cases. While there are well liked characters in the games, many of them are considered rather forgettable.
* ThatOneBoss: [[spoiler: '''Quercus Alba.''' He is the longest boss in the series (even moreso than Damon Gant who took two days to beat) and far more difficult than anyone who came before him. He's an excellent liar and the human equivelent of a brick wall, being tedious and frustrating rather than satisfying. The only good thing about his fight is his memetic objection soundclip.]]
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** Despite being advertised as the new heroine and rival respectively, Kay and Lang don't even appear in the game until the third case of five, and are reduced to a supporting role and a cameo in the WholeEpisodeFlashback, giving them barely half the game to fill their designated roles. Kay especially gets hit with this hard, as despite the Yatagarasu being a central plot arc, she is around for almost none of it [[spoiler:culminating in her doing next to ''nothing'' during the confrontation with Shih-na that concludes the plotline other than getting taken hostage, and then spends the remainder of the game as little more than a minor character.]]
** [[spoiler: Shin-na/Calisto Yew, the enigmatic and ruthless spy is one of the best villains in the game, as well as being one of the few culprits to have a major role in two chapters. She provides some fantastic twists and turns and both her personas are incredibly interesting and entertaining. The fact that TheScrappy Quercus Alba is the main villain is one of the reasons why Turnabout Ablaze was so disappointing to many.]]
** Ernest Amano is [[spoiler:a high-ranking member of the smuggling ring, and a collected and cunning man who will not hesitate to use his money to bail himself or his son out of trouble. He's far more interesting than his son and his main purpose in the chapter is to be arrested. The fact that his arc is so anticlimactic when he was one of the biggest threats Edgeworth could have faced makes his sidelining so much worse.]]
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot:
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ace Attorney Investigations 2]]
* {{Adorkable}}: Sebastian. Despite his ego, when he's not taken seriously (which is most of the time) or he's making a fool of himself, it becomes a rather endearing trait.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Was Sirhan Dogen serious about [[spoiler:threatening to have Patricia Roland's family killed]]? Or was he just being pragmatic and lying about it so he could blackmail [[spoiler:her]], given his established distaste for needless killing? In this case, it may be better to consider the source of this information. [[spoiler:It was Roland who claimed that Dogen was threatening her family. Dogen does not mention her family at all when he comes clean, and instead the impetus for blackmail stems in Roland's involvement in SS-5 and their attempt to silence Dogen at the scene of the crime.]]
* ArcFatigue: This is a ''long'' game. Not only is the first case in the game very extensive by the franchises standards, but subsequent cases go for hours, with extremely complex mysteries that require at times multiple testimonies just to even come close to cracking. Special note goes to "The Inherited Turnabout" which by some estimates is ''longer'' than the final case of the first game, '''and it's only Case 3!''' Case 5, "The Grand Turnabout", is ''even longer'', making it unsurprising that one of the rare negative points made against the game is its sluggish pacing.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Justine Courtney. Many people love her for her unique design and [[spoiler: her takedown of Blaise in the 4th case, as well as doting behavior for her son and, to a lesser extent, trying to help Sebastian.]] Many others hate her because she enables Sebastian's poor decision making, acts obstructive at every turn and is generally a huge bitch towards Edgeworth. Even her fans hate her behaviour at the beginning of the 4th case, when she [[spoiler: dismisses herself as a suspect without providing any detailed reason she couldn't be the culprit, then uses evidence she is fully aware is fabricated to pin Jill's murder on Kay.]]
** Blaise Debeste. [[spoiler:While some appreciate the sheer audacity of his unabashedly vile personality and the depth of his villainy, others find his almost cartoonishly evil nature impossible to take seriously, harming the mood of the cases to feature him, as well as his very passive approach to arguing with Edgeworth, mostly relying on others to argue for him and repeatedly revealing self-incriminating information he has no reason to.]]
** Dane Gustavia is either an interesting [[spoiler:culprit due to his memorable gimmick and stoic yet cunning personality or a overly cruel HateSink who lacks the emotional impact or personality that the other killers have.]]
** Di-Jun Huang [[spoiler:or rather his body double can feel like this, due to his role as a HiddenVillain only coming out long after his death, meaning that there's far less impact or satisfaction when all his horrible deeds are revealed. Those who like him enjoy his CowardlyLion personality and funny moments, and feel that his death was necessary to avoid another Quercus Alba situation.]]
* BestBossEver: The bosses are seen as much stronger here than in Edgeworth's first outing.
** [[spoiler:Sirhan Dogen is both a terrific RedHerring and fearsome opponent. Cunning and unhelpful, he's more interested in playing mind games with Edgeworth, who he slowly grows to see as a WorthyOpponent during their battle. He's unpredictable and unnerving, creating a tense and different battle much earlier than you'd expect such a complex confrontation to happen at.]]
** [[spoiler:Manfred Von Karma is a brief but difficult obstacle. His testimony is unusually short but difficult to break through due to being so succinct. It really shows that despite being obscenely corrupt, he is still a highly competent prosecutor.]]
** [[spoiler:Dane Gustavia is a controversial character, but his final fight is quite enjoyable. With time on his side, he's able to sidestep most evidence by using the fact that eighteen years have passed since the incident, meaning the evidence is mostly circumstantial. Even more unique, he confesses to his crime while using the statute of limitations to his advantage, only being bested due to a misunderstanding about how the statute works. He's far more savvy than he seems and it's an intense battle of wits that requires a familiarity with the gameplay to succeed.]]
** [[spoiler:While difficult, Blaise Debeste's confrontations are highly regarded. They're far more personal and emotional than logical, taking Edgeworth out of his comfort zone and pitting him against someone who uses psychological abuse as a debate tactic. It requires much more strategy to overcome and is a welcome change of pace, showing how even a rather inept criminal can become formidable if handed too much power. His testimonies are more straightforward and also well liked due to Debeste's inability to show any humanity, making it intensely satisfying when he's defeated.]]
** [[spoiler:Simon Keyes is up there with Dahlia Hawthorne when it comes to memorable final bosses. His mindset is chaotic rather than analytical, providing a perfect foil to Edgeworth's strategies. His expressions are demented and unpredictable and his testimonies are unique due to being so full of InsaneTrollLogic that the goal is to find the most plausible events that link him to his crimes. Taking the MonsterClown down is climatic and rewarding, being challenging yet fair as well as shaking up the formula.]]
* BestLevelEver:
** Case 3. Not only for the interesting case itself, but also for the opportunity of playing as [[LongDeadBadass Gregory Edgeworth]]. It's probably the longest case in the game too, switching back and forth across time between Gregory and Miles, while still managing to avoid dragging on. Many consider it to be the best case 3 in the series, if not a contender for the best period.
** Case 5, "The Grand Turnabout". The case requires the solving of ''many'' crimes: [[spoiler:three murders (President Huang, his double, and Jill Crane's lover), four kidnappings (Kay, John, Sebastian, and the SS-5 Incident), the actions of two serial killers (de Killer and Dogen), the disappearance of two children (Gustavia and Dover's sons) and the resolution of a 12-year-long case that was never solved and that put the Lang clan to shame. All being manipulated by none other than Simon Keyes, the defendant from case 2]]. The case is, to this day, the one in the franchise with the highest amount of people and evidence involved (27 people and 33 evidences, no clean ups). [[GrandFinale Grand indeed!]]
* CatharsisFactor:
** Taking down [[spoiler: Dane Gustavia after 19 years of avoiding consequences his crimes. He willingly confesses knowing he couldn't be convicted due to the Statute of Limitations expiring four years ago, or so he thought, as Edgeworth manages to prove that Gustavia can still be tried for his crimes. After abandoning his son, murdering someone and leaving someone to take the heat, finally Jeff Master is free and the true villain can be locked up.]]
** After all the shit he puts Edgeworth and [[spoiler: his son, Sebastian]] through, taking down [[spoiler: Blaise Debeste]] will be satisfying for any Ace Attorney fan [[spoiler: given [[GreaterScopeVillain how much conflict he caused in the original trilogy]]]].
*** It gets better when [[spoiler: Sebastian, who Blaise always considered an idiot, helps to take him down. He bids his father farewell and thanks before Blaise is [[VillainousBreakdown reduced to a mess screaming his son's name]]. It gets better when Patricia Roland, Blaise's accomplice, gives him an earful, thus incriminating both of them.]]
* CharacterRerailment:
** A common criticism of the first ''Investigations'' is that Edgeworth himself was nothing more than a mere PinballProtagonist who just happened to stumble into a major international conspiracy that he had barely any stakes over, and no compelling motivations besides just finding the truth behind loads of crazy, generally unhelpful people. The sequel, meanwhile, does a much better job exploring his character and giving him more personal goals, like finishing a case his father couldn't in the past, fighting for his right to be a prosecutor against his corrupt superiors and even revisiting his original childhood desire to be a defense attorney. The overall stronger, more serious supporting cast helps too, as they allow Edgeworth to no longer need to act like the only adult in the room.
** Unlike the previous game where it is completely glossed over, Larry is back to his Laurice Deauxnim persona, and his artwork turns out to be useful once more, again unlike the previous game where he barely contributes to anything.
* CompleteMonster: [[spoiler:[[AmoralAttorney Blaise Debeste]] is the Chairman of the Prosecutorial Investigation Committee--P.I.C.--whose cruel nature has led to the corruption of the justice system. A self-proclaimed sadist and bully, [[PsychopathicManchild Blaise]]'s greatest joy has always been ruining lives with his prosecution tactics, boasting that he has sent hundreds of people to life imprisonment after pretending he would offer them a plea bargain. Blaise has fabricated evidence, faked autopsies, and [[FrameUp framed]] innocents for decades, abusing the prosecution system so freely that he hosts BlackMarket auctions of important evidence. Blaise is the [[GreaterScopeVillain one who]] drove [[VisualNovel/PhoenixWrightAceAttorney Manfred von Karma]] to murder by tricking him into using a fake autopsy to send an innocent man to prison, only to then penalize ThePerfectionist von Karma for fun. A [[AbusiveParents dreadful father]] to his son Sebastian, Blaise has abused the boy for years and tried to mold him into a perfect prosecutor, and responds to Sebastian's repeated failures by bullying him into a total breakdown. Having helped murder the President of Zheng Fa to empower his body double to take his place, Blaise also helps murder reporter Jack Cameron to cover it up, and later kills Cameron's girlfriend when she comes seeking revenge. Blaise then tries to frame an amnesiac Kay Faraday for the killing, and when he is eventually exposed for his many crimes, Blaise tries to kidnap the judge's son and threaten him with death to get away scot-free.]]
* CrossesTheLineTwice: [[spoiler:Blaise Debeste causing his son to have a mental breakdown just for him to leave the room? Horrific. Blaise Debeste brushing it off and continuing like nothing happened? Hilarious.]]
* DracoInLeatherPants:
** [[spoiler: Simon Keyes]], the BigBad, is very much a scheming little bastard. But since the game also goes out of its way to make him a JerkassWoobie thanks to his horrifying backstory, there are many fans who downplay his actions or even think they are justifiable.
** Many fans seem to only acknowledge Knightley's PetTheDog moments while glossing over his more unlikable qualities.
** Patricia Roland's positive traits (such as her affection for animals and bubby personality) are frequently used to ignore the fact that [[spoiler:she psychologically tortured a child to insanity and used her "beloved" animals as hiding spots for undigestible items]]. It's also common for fans to use Sirhan Dogan's hatred of her as a motivation, despite [[spoiler:the hatred being due to his affinity for the child she tortured]].
* EnsembleDarkHorse:
** Sebastian Debeste is one of the most well-liked characters by people who've played the game, who cite his development as being one of the best in the series. It's not uncommon to see people wanting him to be promoted to the main prosecutor of a future game.
** For someone who appears in only one case, Horace Knightley is popular with the fans. [[spoiler:Mostly because of his relationship with the BigBad.]]
** Gregory Edgeworth gets half a chapter dedicated to him and it instantly demonstrates why he was so beloved by everyone around him. He's a calm, friendly, and rational lawyer who has great interactions with Raymond Shields, the contestants at Masters' party and [[spoiler:Manfred Von Karma]]. He's a formidable protagonist without being too flawless, as he was [[spoiler:sadly too naive for his own good, making his death all the more tragic]].
** Katherine Hall is also a popular character due to her graceful personality and design and having some cute ShipTease moments with Raymond Shields in the flashback. [[spoiler:She's also a positive example of a TragicVillain, with her motivation for wanting to kill Dane Gustavia being nuanced and in character.]]
* EvenBetterSequel: ''Gyakuten Kenji 2'' aimed to be bigger and more dramatic than the original, evident by the "final case" feel that the first case of the game was shooting for (and achieved). Common points of praise are the excellent cast, the great soundtrack, the improved visuals, and having every single case be complicated, challenging, and highly rewarding.
* EvilIsCool: [[spoiler:Simon Keyes]] is highly regarded among the fandom for the great twist behind the character, their intricate backstory, and their simple, yet intimidating [[OneWingedAngel makeover]] followed by what is perhaps one of the best villain themes in the series. The fact they technically [[TheBadGuyWins achieve everything]] they set off to do does not hurt either.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** People cutting off Sebastian mid-sentence, clearing their throats to make him stop talking, having his testimonies called stupid by ''Gumshoe and Larry'', and Franziska whipping Sebastian for being stupid gets much less humorous [[spoiler: after the end of case 4 where his own father berates him in front of everyone else that everything he brags on about was actually thanks to Blaise's influence and nepotism, and that he's too stupid to be his son for not even realizing it and a shame to his dad. Even after that, just a mere few minutes later he's kidnapped and wakes up in ''his own garage'', leading him to think that his dad's men kidnapped him on purpose.]]
-->[[spoiler:'''Sebastian:''' You don't understand, Mr. Edgeworth! I lost everything I had this morning!]]
** At a few points in the fifth case, Simon Keyes hopes that he won't get arrested again like he was in the second case. [[spoiler:He's exposed as the mastermind behind all of the game's events and sent to prison in the end.]]
** Simon Keyes being part of Big Berry Circus is much harsher when it's revealed [[spoiler:he's a sociopath who instigated several murders and commited one himself]]. Considering all the drama that happened back in "Turnabout Big Top", you can't help but feel it's rather harsh for the circus to have hosted [[spoiler:another killer and one who didn't regret at all what he did, unlike Acro]].
* HilariousInHindsight: Throughout the game, there is a mastermind in a hooded red raincoat committing crimes, with the ultimate reveal being that [[spoiler:the culprit is a clown that Edgeworth met earlier in the game.]] It's almost reminiscent of [[Characters/BatmanTheJoker a certain Batman villain.]]
** Actually, [[spoiler: a SadClown who got abused ever since childhood without any help from authority who finally snaps and plans to kill anyone who wronged him for revenge? [[Characters/Joker2019ArthurFleckJoker Now where have we heard that before?]]]]
* LoveToHate: The biggest example in the game is [[spoiler:Blaise Debeste. He's the corrupt head of the P.I.C, and the mastermind behind the assassination of the president. He's an obnoxious, abusive, creepy, immature, narcissistic monster who abuses people (including his own son) for shits and giggles.]] Despite the fact he's a contender for the biggest HateSink in the franchise, he's such an entertaining villain, that you'll be aching for his comeuppance.
* MagnificentBastard: [[ProfessionalKiller Sirhan Dogen]] is the aformentioned blind assassin responsible for killing the former president of Zheng Fa, along with the primary supplier of the prison, having blackmailed the Warden Patricia Roland, into giving him and other prisoners anything they wanted by threatening her life. [[spoiler:Standing up to De Killer to save his adopted son, outtwiting Edgeworth, and letting himself be arrested so he could get revenge on his enemies, Dogen and Keyes execute a masterful revenge plot to get every single one of their enemies convicted. When Keyes falls under suspicion for the murder, Dogen has his attack dog take the victim's body into the prison and removes the chisel to decrease suspicion on Keyes. When confronted later on about being the mastermind, Dogen [[GracefulLoser gracefully accepts defeat]] and reveals that the mastermind is his "acolyte" whose life he saved as a child. Affable, deceptive, and cunning, Dogen got his desire of having a new cellmate in Keyes.]]
* MemeticMolester: Ray Shields refers himself as "Uncle Ray" and has a penchant for offering hugs and candy to everyone [[AmbiguouslyBi (even the guys)]].
* SugarWiki/MostWonderfulSound: When "The Great Truth Burglar " plays in case 4, due to showing that [[spoiler:Kay is back to her normal self!]]
* {{Narm}}:
** Justine's [[http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/aceattorney/images/c/c3/J-Idle7.gif/revision/latest?cb=20140206181121 "panicked"]] animation is supposed to be dramatic but it looks... more [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything sensual?]]
** In early releases of the fan translation, as Edgeworth is pondering whether to become a defense attorney at the end of Case 3, he thinks, "The path I choose is...", immediately followed by, "End of patch. Save your game at the end of the episode when it is asked," in the same text box, as if that was the answer Edgeworth came up with.
** The fact that ''every single case'' which occurs in the series' present days can in someway [[ForWantOfANail be traced back to a dessert-making competition]]. Also related to that event, Manfred von Karma being introduced by walking off a ''candy castle''.
* NarmCharm:
** [[spoiler:Blaise Debeste's]] PsychopathicManchild traits are so explicit and unbelievably vile that it borders on RefugeInAudacity on how nobody has linked him to his many crimes. In a way, it makes him even more terrifying, as it shows just how dangerous someone with no morality or self control can be in a position of power.
** [[spoiler:The fake president of Zheng Fa being crushed by a balloon is a pretty silly way for someone like him to die, yet it's a fitting CruelAndUnusualDeath for such a vile human being.]]
* ObviousJudas: [[spoiler: Blaise]] being evil doesn't come as much of a surprise, considering [[ObviouslyEvil their appearance]] and the fact their attempt at being FauxAffablyEvil only makes them come off as downright ''creepy''. And the fact the only other suspect in the case is [[spoiler:Kay Faraday]]. Of course, the real twist is just ''[[MoralEventHorizon how]]'' evil they turn out to be, and the game's actual BigBad is much more well hidden.
* PlayerPunch: The second game has several. First, in Case 3, having to confront von Karma over evidence forgery as Gregory can count as one to players who know what it will lead to, similarly to being forced to present forged evidence as Phoenix in AJ. Case 4 begins with what looks like [[spoiler: an attempted murder of Kay, her showing up heavily injured with amnesia... and then being accused of murder]]. And finally, in Case 5, finding out [[spoiler: the real killer is Simon Keyes, someone who not only had Edgeworth's complete trust before, but who Kay considered a genuine friend. The moments before the big reveal are especially heartbreaking, with both Kay and Regina practically begging Edgeworth to prove it isn't true, and even Edgeworth himself being reluctant to believe it]].
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap:
** A possibly intentional example. Sebastian Debeste is made to be as obnoxious and unhelpful as possible, making [[spoiler:it all the more satisfying when he TookALevelInBadass and personally presented the evidence that put his dad behind bars. While he's not regarded highly in the first three chapters, it's generally agreed that he redeems himself and then some by the game's end.]]
** Justine Courtney being revealed as a great mother/mother figure to Sebastian Debeste and John Marsh does a lot to redeem her in many people's eyes, though whether it changes fan's opinions on her is still hotly contested.
** Regina Berry is better received this time around, still being a NiceGirl yet more cautious and responsible. It probably helps that instead of creepy scenes of much older men hitting on her, she has cute and endearing interactions with characters who have similar personalities.
* RonTheDeathEater: Justine Courtney is sometimes portrayed as a ManipulativeBitch who obstructs Edgeworth at every turn, downplaying her maternal nature towards Sebastian Debeste and John Marsh as well as her HeelFaceTurn after [[spoiler:Edgeworth defeats Blaise Debeste.]]
* TheScrappy: Delicia Scones is not too popular due to her ugly design, habit of complicating things, and generally feeling unnecessary. She drags the beloved third case down a little bit when she's on screen by setting up scenarios far less interesting than the main story. [[spoiler:Worse, she's a KarmaHoudini who gets away with her deception with little more than a stern talking to.]]
* ThatOneLevel:
** The Logic Chess battle against [[spoiler:Sebastian]]. It's the longest Logic Chess battle in the game. This is somewhat justified and lampshaded as [[spoiler:at that moment, Sebastian has become a blubbering mess drenched in his own desperation and self-loathing, with Miles constantly mentioning that Sebastian is in his [[DespairEventHorizon emotional and psychological limit]]. Kay and Miles admit they need to take it easy on the Logic Chess (something Miles has never done before) in order to not break the boy completely. Three out of the five questionings in the match are actually related to bringing Sebastian back from his HeroicBSOD rather than attempting to get information]].
** [[spoiler: Blaise's]] in the previous chapter is almost as bad: it's long and requires several actions you never needed to do before (such as going back on previous lines of questioning only to find options that weren't there before) and has to be ended by [[spoiler: selecting the one option that penalized you ''every'' other time you tried it]]. Fittingly both battles are the only two in the game to use the "Allegro" version of the Logic Chess theme, and [[spoiler: are family members]].
** To a lesser extent, Lotta Hart's during the fourth case. The battle itself isn't ''that'' hard, but the clock runs down at a far faster rate than in any other Logic Chess battle in the game, meaning that any mistake ends up being much more damaging.
** The Fourth Case in general is very difficult to make sense off until halfway through. Most of the initial evidence is either too abstract to interpret (i.e. [[spoiler:Kay's first chunk of recovered memories]]) or outright lie to the player (i.e. [[spoiler:the autopsy report, which is otherwise reliable 100% time]]). It doesn't help that the partner for most the case ([[spoiler:Amnesiac]] Kay) is not very helpful for obvious reasons. Also, many plot threads are deliberately kept vague for the subsequent case, so you never really get a full grasp of everything, which can surprisingly lead to plenty of mistaken assumptions.
* {{Squick}}: In case 3 of the second game, the lyre of the Gemini sherbet statue [[spoiler: was coated with a mix of salt from a salt rock lamp and the killer's blood. It was then eaten by two unknowing people]].
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Early on in the second case, it is revealed that Raymond Shields would have been [[spoiler:Horace Knightley]]'s defense attorney in his trial had the latter not been murdered. It might have been nice to see Ray go up against his old boss's son in court given the tension between the two over Edgeworth's "Demon Prosecutor" past.
* UnderusedGameMechanic: [[VisualNovel/PhoenixWrightAceAttorney Fingerprinting]] [[VisualNovel/ApolloJusticeAceAttorney is back]]! And it's used exactly once.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Justine is supposed to come off as merciless to lawbreakers and stuck [[spoiler: in a very compromising situation involving Blaise coercing her and her nephew/adoptive son being kidnapped]]. However, before the reveal that [[spoiler: she was working to take down Blaise]] she spent two cases hindering Edgeworth's investigation, [[spoiler: used forged evidence to try and convict an innocent girl for a crime she knew Blaise was responsible for]], and was generally just being a giant bitch.

The overall stronger, more serious supporting cast helps too, as they allow Edgeworth to no longer act like the only adult in the room.

Many plot threads are also deliberately kept vague for the subsequent case, so you never really get a full grasp of everything, which can surprisingly lead to plenty of mistaken assumptions.

** Patricia Roland's positive traits (such as her affection for animals and bubby personality) are frequently used to ignore the fact that she psychologically tortured a child to insanity and used her "beloved" animals as hiding spots for undigestible items. It's also common for fans to use Sirhan Dogan's hatred of her as a motivation, despite the hatred being due to his affinity for the child she tortured.
