** EarAche: Happens to AMAZO when Nightwing sticks a couple of batarangs to his ears to free himself from AMAZO's grip.

* WouldntHitAGirl: Despite Ms. Li being all snarky at the Black Mask, he never really hits her. He goes directly for the guy beside her. Possibly because, despite how much he yells, he's fully aware that he can't operate without her.

* AudibleSharpness: One of the tetrad of assassins that comes after the Red Hood has glowing blue swords, that look like normal swords when they're not powered up. They also have a loud hum.

* MadeOfIron: The number of close explosions that Batman and others survive without any real injury is kind of ridiculous.

** A more straight forward example was earlier in the film when [[spoiler: Ra's says that they never found Jason's body after he jumped out the window]].

* SummonBiggerFish : Black Mask's final gambit. He is painfully aware of the fact.

* TechnicolorNinjas: The Fearsome Hand of Four wear green powered armor. Doesn't stop them from sneaking up on Red Hood or giving him a fight for his life.

* ActorAllusion: Possibly. Red Hood is voiced by Creator/JensenAckles, who plays Dean Winchester in ''Series/{{Supernatural}}''. In one episode, Dean throws a pen into an enemy's gun barrel and states, "I'm Batman". [[spoiler: This is similar to Batman throwing a batarang to jam the barrel of Jason's gun at the end.]]

** Red Hood's primary motivation for clashing with Batman. The twist is [[spoiler: that he isn't pissed at Batman for not saving him, he's pissed at him for not killing the Joker in the wake of his murder.]]

* AntiVillain: Again, Red Hood. He is [[spoiler:ultimately revealed as a [[SlidingScaleOfAntiVillains Type II]].]]

* BatmanGambit: Despite this being a Batman movie, it's the Red Hood who plays one. Everything the Hood did was to get [[spoiler: Black Mask desperate enough to release Joker, so the Hood could provide Batman with his SadisticChoice.]]

** Oddly enough, {{Averted}} later, when he failed to predict what Batman would do at the end, which hasn't changed since he first became Batman.

* BoundandGagged: Everyone who works for Red Hood or Black Mask, including Black mask himself, gets treated to this courtesy of Joker.

** Names such as The Penguin, Harvey Dent and the Scarecrow are bandied about by [[spoiler: Jason]], and he also references "friends [Joker] has crippled". The Joker's quip about the camera could also be a veiled reference to the events of ''TheKillingJoke''.

* CyberCyclops: One of the ninjas Red Hood fights, complete with [[EyeBeams Eye Beam]].
* DarkerAndEdgier: [[WordOfGod The crew behind the film]] have stated that they hold the opinion this could be their darkest work yet, both compared to the {{DCAU}} and the previous films in [[WesternAnimation/DCUniverseAnimatedOriginalMovies the line]]. They wouldn't be too far off.

* AdaptationDistillation[=/=]PragmaticAdaptation: The works the film is based on are mostly adapted very well and quite faithfully, but the movie changes a few of the sillier or more complex aspects. From ''ComicBook/ADeathInTheFamily'', the political aspect of the Joker getting diplomatic immunity [[spoiler: for Jason's death]] because he became an ambassador for the Ayatollah was understandably dropped. As was the bit about SelfDemonstrating/TheJoker selling a nuke to Arab terrorists. And the search for Jason Todd's mother among an Israeli Mossad agent, Lady Shiva, and a back-alley abortionist working as an aid relief worker. Actually, after taking out the silly parts from ''{{A Death in the Family}}'', all that was left was [[spoiler: about 5 minutes of SelfDemonstrating/TheJoker beating the crap out of Jason Todd with a crowbar]]. The major change from ''Under The Hood'' was using a completely different explanation for [[spoiler:Jason's resurrection, instead of the whole "coming back from the dead via [[InfiniteCrisis Superboy-Prime Punch]]" thing.]]. [[spoiler: SelfDemonstrating/TheJoker]] now has a larger role, and Black Mask's characterization has been somewhat changed [[hottip:*: from a DangerouslyGenreSavvy MagnificentBastard and a BadBoss and HeManWomanHater who murders all of his lieutenants on a whim and is every bit as evil, dangerous and crazy as TheJoker-; to a SurroundedByIdiots-type with a HairTriggerTemper who grudgingly respects his right-hand woman and only beats his minions up- and only when he is angry (which is often)- rather than killing them left, right and centre, and is forced by desperation, and against his better judgement, to hire a "certified psychotic" like the Joker, who promptly betrays him]].

* TheAtoner: Ra's al Ghul [[spoiler:felt remorseful for his involvement in Jason's death (since it wasn't part of his plan, and he only kills people when it serves his "greater cause"), having hired the Joker to keep Batman and Robin distracted from his activities and quickly realizing the Joker couldn't be controlled. He attempted to make up for his mistake by stealing Jason's body shortly before it was to be returned to Gotham, and resurrected him using the Lazarus Pit. Unfortunately, this means that Ra's is also responsible for all the trouble Jason causes as the Red Hood.]]

** Compared to his comic-book counterpart, Black Mask is a ''fantastic'' employer- he'll beat the crap out of someone every other meeting, sure, but at least he won't personally and horribly torture you ForTheEvulz or have all his lieutenants slaughtered on a whim.

It's mainly an adaptation of elements from ''ComicBook/ADeathInTheFamily'' and the more recent ''Under The Hood'' comic series, from which it derives its title. It goes for DarkerAndEdgier and is one of the darker and more brutally violent DC Animated films. Voice actors include BruceGreenwood as Batman, JensenAckles as the Red Hood, Creator/NeilPatrickHarris as Nightwing, and JohnDiMaggio as the Joker.
