In the real world, in a bad enough crisis, everything goes to FEMA. Everything becomes FEMA-run and controlled. The idea behind this is is that they're an organization built for dealing with massive crises, and when a crisis is massive enough, certain liberties need to be suspended to be able to solve the crisis with a minimal death toll. For example, FEMA gets control of all news sources in a bad enough crisis. This allows them to not only uniformly get the correct information out, without worrying about pleasing advertisers, but also avoid rumors and talking heads causing more issues. However, this has had a side effect: the FEMA death camp theory has existed for decades. Even in the original DeusEx, it was a thing. The "logic" goes that the real reason FEMA gets all these powers is because it allows a unilateral fascist takeover of the nation, and not just a temporary solution to a massive problem. The FEMA conspiracy theory is mostly popular in right-wing circles, and Left 4 Dead appears to take place sometime in Fall of 2009, judging by graffiti and the like. This is a year after the 2008 election. Perhaps the point of divergence between the Left 4 Dead universe and ours was the 2008 election. In the Left 4 Dead universe, John McCain courted the conspiracy theorist crowd more heavily, and promised things like shutting down FEMA. This won him the election, and soon after, FEMA was ended. CEDA was started in place of it, designed to not be able to take over the nation, and because of the massive reductions in powers, CEDA was unable to do much of anything. There's also other subtle hints that could push towards this. For example, guns are certainly common in America, but not quite as common as in Left 4 Dead, especially in cities, and even more especially not in airports. Yet, in both cases, there are assault weapons in locations one would not expect to find assault weapons. Things like that point to a Republican victory in 2008. And, let's not forget, Creator/JossWhedon did say that Mitt Romney's election would cause the zombie apocalypse.

[[WMG:Nick is Canadian.]]
* For the longest time, this Troper couldn't even tell a Canadian accent from an American one, especially as a 9-year old. But upon growing up and watching/playing more Canadian media such as ''Series/TrailerParkBoys'' and various {{Creator/Ubisoft}} games (infamous for its use of FakeAmerican Canadian actors), Nick's accent sticks out like a sore thumb. It's said that Nick travels around a lot to pull various cons and based on his unamilarity with and prejudices against the DeepSouth, he's definitely from up North. I personally feel as though he was actually born and raised in Canada and perhaps moved to America sometime in his adult life to start pulling schemes, which could explain the cases of OohMeAccentsSlipping. [[FridgeBrilliance This could also partially explain why Francis hates his guts]]; one of the many things he hates is Canadians.

** Also makes sense. Tallahassee is strongly implied to be a Southerner (so from Ellis's neck of the woods), dialogue from ''VideoGame/Left4Dead2'' states that he's been to Hollywood, he's referenced again in "Dark Carnival" (remember where the final shootout took place in Zombieland?)--and, of course, he's a CrazyAwesome badass.

[[WMG:The NFA never passed in the Left 4 Dead universe]]
There's a lot of powerful automatic weapons easily available to civilians seemingly everywhere. Actual fully automatic firearms are very rare and hard to obtain legally in the United States and ones manufactured after 1986 cannot be owned by civilians at all. While the M16 style rifles could have been scavenged from the military, the MAC-10 submachine guns and AK-47 style rifles would be less likely to have been obtained this way. Some of them are easily picked up from right behind a counter in a gun store as well. This hints that fully automatic weapons were never put behind a national registry and tax stamp requirement and the average citizen could continue to purchase them like any other weapon.

** I believe, although I may be wrong you can feel free to correct me (preferably without a degrading hyperlink to YouFailBiologyForever) but I believe cell division is speed up by injuries--injuries most of the special infected cause (they could also be designed to aid the horde-- most scenarios with Pinning SI's involve them holding you down while the horde brutalizes you, again causing injuries) and the resulting rapid cell division means more and more cells are impregnated with Green Flu prophages, speeding up the infection. The Tank and Witche's tendancy to kill rather than maim does fit the bill of an emergency killing tool when dealing with non-infectable targets, and the smoker ''does'' tend to drag you away from help rather than try to turn you right there, most likely so you can develop into one of the aforementioned Area Denial/ Heavy Assassination "monarchs". This fits in with another WMG of the Tank and Witch being of the same strain, and is, in my opinion, pure FridgeBrilliance.
