* CoolGuns: The game has a wide variety of Old West era firearms ranging from the usual Colt Single Action Army/Winchester Rifle/Double Barreled Shotgun load out to weapons which were common in real life but appear less often in fiction, such as the Colt 1851 Navy and Schofield revolvers all the way to RareGuns such as the Ferguson Rifle and the Nock Gun. The Ferguson Rifle deserves a special mention, as its coolness is commented on a couple of times.

* GunPorn: There are plenty of different Old West era firearms available for use in the game that fall outside the standard Single Action Army/Winchester Rifle/Double Barreled Shotgun standard (though these are available), including a number of RareGuns to play with.

* AnachronismStew: Texas Hold 'Em poker is at least twenty years early here. Its inclusion here seems to be due to its surge in popularity during the game's release in the noughties.

* ActionGirl: Jenny makes good use of a rifle when the stagecoach between Dodge and Empire breaks down.

* ArtisticLicenseHistory: Clay Allison claims that Ned White apparently died during the American Civil War ten years prior to the events of the game. Cole explicitly states in his opening narration that the year is 1880, fifteen years after the war's end. A flashback to the scene in question occurs, showing Cole as a baby. Given the date, Cole can be no older than nineteen, yet is shown as an adult in a flashback to "a dozen years back" being mauled by a cougar.

* MoneyForNothing: Cash is scarce early in the game, but after a few discoveries of gold there is not much need for it anymore.

** Clay's information about when he believed Ned to have been killed, combined with [[spoiler:Colt being an infant that Ned found during this incident]] means that Cole cannot possibly be older than 12 years old.

* WritersCannotDoMath: According to Clay, Ned was nearly killed in an incident during the Civil War, during which Ned found Cole, as a baby, ten years prior to the start of the game. [[FridgeLogic No more than a few seconds of thinking about this]] should make it clear what is wrong with that statement. Though, it does explain why everyone refers to Cole as "kid".

* YoungerThanTheyLook: Colton looks and sounds like he is in his thirties, but judging from the time the game takes place and his birth around the end of the Civil War, he is at least 15 years old.

* AwesomeButImpractical: The Nock Gun and the Cannon Nock Gun. Sure, they're ridiculously powerful weapons, but the only way to get them is to beat the main missions (for the Nock Gun) and all the side missions (for the Cannon Nock Gun), at which point, the only use for them is to wipe out towns or take out random bandit attacks which occur from time to time. There is an Easter egg that lets you replay earlier levels with your advanced weapons and skills once you've finished the game. To boot, the real-life Nock gun was incredibly impractical due to the tremendous recoil that either injured or shattered the shoulder of the wielder.

* BaldOfEvil: Sported by Dutchie, Magruder's muscle. Magruder himself has one, as does Sergeant Hollister.

* BeardOfEvil: BigBad Magruder has a large beard that's becoming gray due to his age.

* {{Hypocrite}}: At one point, Macgruder says Hollister and the Renegades are traitors who can't be trusted. While he's not wrong, Macgruder conveniently seems to forget he fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Though to be fair, it's implied he was only using the Confederacy as a means to find Quivira.

* ObviouslyEvil: Reverend Josiah Reed who has greasy black hair and mustache, a hook nose, and a custom all-black preacher's outfit. He practically oozes evil. Lampshaded by Colton.
