Crosswicking new trope

Added DiffLines:

* OutcastRefuge:
** Underworld is a museum with an exhibit of the [[Myth/GreekMythology Greek underworld]] at the time the bombs fell which has become a safe haven for [[TechnicallyLivingZombie Ghouls]]. Non-Ghouls are able to enter, like the [[PlayerCharacter Lone Wanderer]], as they do still need to trade and have quests available. You can pick up the Ghoul follower Charon there.
** The aptly named Brotherhood Outcasts are an AntiMutiny faction of the Brotherhood of Steel who split off from Elder Lyons' group to continue their mission closer to the ideals of the original West Coast Brotherhood. They've set up at Fort Independence where you can assist them in the ''Operation: Anchorage'' expansion. Between the events of this game and ''Fallout 4'', the new East Coast Brotherhood Elder, Maxson, convinces them to return to the main contingent by veering closer to their ideals while keeping some of the practical changes (like being open to worthy outside recruits) from the old West Coast doctrine.

* DiegeticCharacterCreation: This game is perhaps the most expansive example of this trope: the character creation process is the Lone Wanderer's entire formative years. Designing your face is presented as a gene projection of your adult self, choosing your primary stats is done by reading a children's book as a baby, and your skills are chosen via a career aptitude test in adolescence.

* SimulatedFantasyPostApocalypticReality:
** In the main plot, your quest to find your father eventually leads you to Vault 112: here, the residents have spent the last two hundred years plugged into virtual reality, the current simulation being [[{{Dreamville}} Tranquility Lane]], an idyllic 1950s suburbia. Compared to ruins of Washington outside, it's a paradise... except that the Vault's Overseer, [[PsychopathicManchild Dr Stanislaus Braun]], routinely uses his [[VirtualRealityWarper power over the simulation]] to torture the residents for his own amusement. Worse still, your dad's ventured inside and can't escape, forcing you to follow him in. [[spoiler: The only way to escape is to play along with Braun's sick games... or make use of a CorruptedContingency to break Braun's control of the simulator, put his victims out of their misery, and leave Braun trapped alone in virtual reality - [[AndIMustScream forever]].]]
** In the ''Operation: Anchorage'' DLC, you find yourself in an abandoned VR facility hidden deep in the Capital Wastelands with priceless loot on the other side of a locked door. The only way to get inside is to take part in a pre-War military simulation sending you on a journey through a [[PropagandaPiece heavily biased depiction of the Liberation of Anchorage]].

* ShortRangeLongRangeWeapon: All the guns in the game have an ArbitraryMaximumRange, but it can be especially noticeable with the sniper rifle. Sniper-type players are known to fail to make long-distance shots that are quite possible in other games, never mind RealLife. The bullet simply disappears before it reaches its target. However, just because you see the bullet disappear doesn't mean it won't hit it's target (assuming that it is indeed within the maximum range). It doesn't matter how far away you are from the target, the game WILL notify you if you score a critical hit.

** Pittsburgh, as seen in ''The Pitt'', crosses straight into DeathWorld territory. The sky is choked with pollution, and the water is not only irradiated even more than in DC (taking a swim in one of the rivers will kill you within seconds) but is also full of unknown mutagens, leading to horrific mutations within some of the residents. Many of the original residents have either gone insane and become Wildmen or mutated into Trogs. It got to the point that when the Brotherhood of Steel arrived, their solution was to just [[KillEmAll slaughter everything]] except the few unmutated residents left, and attempts to bring about order afterwards only led to the Pitt turning into a brutal slave den.

** To the surprise of many gamers, [[AceCustom Lincoln's Repeater]] is ''not'' fictional - it's based on an actual, custom-made Henry repeating rifle given to UsefulNotes/AbrahamLincoln as a gift in the hopes that he would adopt the design as standard-issue for the US Army. That said it likely would not have fired modern ammunition without some serious custom work.
** Point Lookout is [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_Lookout_State_Park a real place]]. Calvert is a fictional member of a real family who own a manor in the area. Also, there really was a Civil War POW camp there, and the lighthouse is another actual point of interest.
** Griffon and his Aqua Cura look at first like a classic example of a SnakeOilSalesman with a ''Fallout'' flavour (selling radioactive water as a miracle cure), but [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioactive_quackery selling radioactive items as medicine]] was a real-life practice from the first half of 20th century.
** The Soil Stradivarius from the "Agatha's Song" sidequest is [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soil_Stradivarius a real artifact]], and finding it in the Eastern USA in the future is plausible, since the actual violin belongs to Itzhak Perlman, a musician living in New York.
** While finding documents from US history (like the ''Bill of Rights'' or the ''Declaration of Independance'') in Washington DC's National Archives makes sense, discovering a copy of the ''Magna Carta'' (a document from medieval English history, bearing UsefulNotes/KingJohnOfEngland's signature) may seem strange. However, in real life the National Archives really have a copy of the document (a copy made in 1297, permanently loaned since 2007).

Added Morton's Fork

Added DiffLines:

* MortonsFork: Boy does ''The Pitt'' throw one HELL of one at you, and neither option is particularly satisfactory from a moral standpoint. To set the scene, the Pitt is slaver central, with slaves effectively rotting away as a result of a disease that looks like they're turning into ghouls...painfully, might we add. The only hope? A cure, but not only is the cure in the hands of the slaver leader, but a) it turns out the slaver leader is a {{Well Intentioned Extremist}} who hates what he's done but views his acts as a necessary evil in order to save everyone, and b) the "cure" is actually his infant daughter who was born immune to the disease. As a result, the Lone Wanderer is left with two options: kidnap an innocent child and deliver her to the leader of the slave revolt, who seems none too compassionate about ''kidnapping a helpless child'', or refuse to do so, prolonging the suffering of the slaves and effectively destroying their hope of freedom. Just to make it all the MORE painful choosing, the slaver leader IS intent on using the cure on everyone, but the studies are going slowly as a result of, well, performing medical experiments on a ''BABY'', but they at least have the proper equipment to test safely without harming her. On the other hand, Wehrner has a shoddy "lab" in a dirty run down factory, and while his bedside manner about the infant is SEVERELY lacking, the slaves intend to ransom her back to her parents for their freedom. So good luck choosing between slavery or kidnapping children, hero!

* FastKillingRadiation: The radiation mechanic guarantees your death if you accumulate more than 400 rads. Many areas of the game subject you to low amounts like 1 or 2 rads per second, sometimes 7 to 15 in "dangerous" areas. Nothing you can't survive if you stock up on Rad-X and Rad-Away to buff up your resistance and remove the radiation every now and then. However, outside the entrance to Vault 34 is the single-most irradiated area of the Capital Wastelands. The rads per second start to skyrocket the closer you get to the entrance. The entrance itself actually counts as a fast travel location once properly discovered. Any Lone Wander who is foolhardy enough to fast travel to this location, even well prepared with maximum radiation resistance, will be dead within a ''second'' if they're not fast enough to pause the game and start popping rad away and booking it out of there.
