The 1.1 update has added four new bosses, new swords, and more.

* BossBattle: Terraria currently has four eight of them.them. Three of them are harder versions of earlier bosses.

*** The 1.1 patch has added new swords that make the older ones obsolete. For starters, the swords made from the new materials cobalt, mythril and adamantite, as well as Excalibur and the Breaker Blade, the BFS to rule them all.

*** As of the 1.1 update, there is new Infinity Plus One Gun in town: The Megashark. By upgrading the Minishark with new materials, you can put even more dakka into it, making it shoot as hard and even faster than the Phoenix Blaster.

*** It is fast no longer, unfortunately. Receiving a (albeit much needed) nerf in 1.0.6. It no longer fires rapidly. And you must click for each and every star. That being said, it still is rather powerful, dealing a whopping 60 average damage. Then it got unerfed in 1.1, where it's firing speed was brought back to normal.

** There used to be an even bigger case of this when you could get to the floating islands early on. You could find the indispensable, fall-damage-removing Lucky Horseshoe, the hideously powerful Starfury, and can often have enormous amounts of Gold/Silver bars up there, so you could make armour out of it early on. However, this has since been subverted with the latest patch - the chests there can sometimes be locked, requiring a Golden Key from the Dungeon. However, there are usually large veins of gold and silver ore on the islands, so even if you don't have the keys, finding them is still an advantage.
