However, her arm and thigh muscles have also become noticeably larger and more toned. Which is also more realistic, considering her profession.

* RestingRecovery: The item Healing Field has this mechanic. Characters inside the field will heal damage and will continue to do so as long as they stay inside. The catch is that you must remain inside the field to heal and enemies can also be healed if they enter, so you have to keep enemies from coming in while at the same time you have limited movement if you want to maximize your recovery.

* UnrealisticBlackHole: The appropriately-named Black Hole item sucks everything - items, enemies, projectiles, etc. - into its center. Only the player is immune from this. Trying to knock away a person being sucked into the black hole will only have them be pulled back.

This is distinct from characters like Dr. Mario and the three Links) are considered distinct enough who has a handful of unique moves. Even Young Link doesn't count because despite being originally a clone, his derived moveset is ''Melee'' Link who technically doesn't "exist" anymore as ''Ultimate'' Link is so altered compared to be individual characters.his Melee incarnation.

* AscendedMeme: For years, it was accepted as fact that Ridley would never be a playable character in ''Smash'' because he was "too big", e.g. he was so large compared to Samus that to make him playable would require scaling him down to the point that he doesn't feel as fearsome as he rightfully should. When he was finally announced to make his ''Smash'' debut here, what was his
newcomer blurb? "Ridley Hits the Big Time!"

** Stages are now selected first before the characters. This allows for a more strategic selection of characters, as certain fighters tend to perform better or worse on certain types of stages.
** Aside from Omega forms which feature Final Destination-style stage layout, all stages now also have Battlefield forms for another neutral layout of the stage.
** Additionally, there is now a stage hazard toggle for those that prefer the default layout of the stage without the annoyance of hazards.

!!This game provides examples of:
* AntiFrustrationFeatures:
** All Final Smashes have been streamlined to keep matches fast-paced. To name a few examples: Sonic, Pac-Man, and Pikachu's Final Smashes have the characters attacking automatically; Fox and Falco's Landmasters are retired in lieu of a cinematic attack by the Star Fox team; and Donkey Kong's Final Smash replaces his bongos with RapidFireFisticuffs.
** To mitigate stalling and keep up the pace of combat, ground dodging now decays with repeated use, like moves. The more times you dodge in a row, the longer the dodge animation takes and the less invulnerability the dodge gives you.
** If any character is offscreen, a minimap now appears at the corner of the screen that displays the current location of all fighters on the field.
** {{Charged Attack}}s can now be charged in the air, and all charges can now be jump cancelled.
** Characters with specific gauges and unique mechanics, like Cloud's Limit Break, Villager's Pocket, or Robin's weapon durability, will now always display a character-specific icon next to their damage that displays relevant information.
** Monado Arts were altered so that you can now pick a specific Art right away by pressing a direction after triggering Monado Arts.
** Ryu always faces his opponent in a 1-on-1 match like in ''Street Fighter'', making it much easier to use Input Specials.
** Using PK Thunder now shows a trajectory arrow next to Ness or Lucas that tells you where the attack will fire you if you hit yourself with it.
* AscendedExtra:
** The Inklings graduate from DLC trophy and Mii Fighter costume to playable between ''3DS/Wii U'' and this game.
** Ridley appeared as a boss in the Subspace Emissary and a stage hazard in ''Wii U'''s Pyrosphere before becoming a playable character.
** Daisy was formerly a palette swap for Peach before coming a playable (albeit Echo) character in her own right.
* AscendedMeme: For years, it was accepted as fact that Ridley would never be a playable character in ''Smash'' because he was "too big", e.g. he was so large compared to Samus that to make him playable would require scaling him down to the point that he doesn't feel as fearsome as he rightfully should. When he was finally announced to make his ''Smash'' debut here, what was his newcomer blurb? "Ridley Hits the Big Time!"
* InsistentTerminology: Clone characters are not "{{Moveset Clone}}s," they are "Echo Characters." There is a distinction, as some clones (such as Dr. Mario and the three Links) are considered distinct enough to be individual characters.
* LudicrousPrecision: This game measures damage percentages to an extra decimal point, although the digit after the decimal is significantly smaller.
* OldSaveBonus: Figure Player data stored on Toys/{{Amiibo}} can be transferred from ''Wii U/3DS'' to ''Ultimate''.
* PoisonMushroom: The Fake Smash Ball, which releases a devastating explosion when it's broken. Compared to a real Smash Ball, the Fake Smash Ball has a thicker horizontal line and a thinner vertical line.
* TookALevelInBadass: Peach (and Daisy)'s Toads seem a lot less helpless in ''Ultimate'' than in previous installments (where it seemed that they were being used as human shields). Now, they jump out to protect their Princess and assist with throws.
* WhamLine:
** The E3 2018 trailer for ''Ultimate'', which immediately follows [[WhamShot Snake's return]]:
-->'''[[LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters EVERYONE]] [[TheBusCameBack IS HERE!]]'''
** And for long-time fans, an even bigger one came with the character reveal that hit shortly afterward:
-->'''''[[CueTheFlyingPigs RIDLEY HITS THE BIG TIME!]]'''''
