It's not unexpected. Several posts at the adventurer's guild bulletin board say to inquire at the castle gates. By talking to him, you're following up on explicit instructions.

However a ton of exposition can actually be received from a completely unexpected source: The guard atop the gatehouse at the castle. As per Sierra's idiom, there's nothing in-game that would even hint at him having anything interesting to say - he's just there to open the gate for you.
