** Intentionally inverted after level 100. The Planes of Prophecy expansion increased the level cap from 100 to 110, but the XP requirements jumped so exponentially that you have no other choice but to complete quests within the Plane of Magic and expansion onward in order to level. It would take you literal years of grinding just to reach level 101.

* ForWantOfANail: The fate of the continent of Taelosia changes drastically due to the timeline split that happened after the Plane of Time.
** In ''Everquest'', the gods withdrew their influence to punish mortals for invading their planes, which also removed a magical fog that originally prevented adventurers from safely navigating to the continent of Taelosia. Once they were able to reliably travel there, the native Nihil race then had a fighting chance against the Muramite army invading the continent from the realm of Discord.
** In ''Everquest II'', the gods withdrew their influence to punish the mortals for invading their planes, but their absence eventually resulted in the Rending that shifted the continents and made the waters too violent to safely travel. As a result, the Muramite army conquered Taelosia and rendered the Nihil race completely extinct because there was nobody who could help fight back. Mayong Mistmoore and his armies eventually found the continent and wiped out the Muramite forces, sealing up the portal to Discord in the process. He then built Castle Vacrul for his two sons to live in, founded the city of Forlorn Gist at the base of the castle for his armies of the night to live, and renamed the continent to Vetrovia because there was nobody left alive who ever knew of the name "Taelosia". Some time later, a population of Quellious-worshipping centaurs founded Kamapor village along the coast of the Broken Shores in the Svarni Expanse, and a tribe of Pygmies moved into Karuupa Jungle. What remains of the Muramite army are a number of Kyv who were left behind and are just focusing on trying to survive.

Not really a retcon, as it doesn't overwrite established lore of the first game. The devs wanted to use the Stable Time Loop created by the events of the Plane of Time to create their own timeline. Mayong did become a god in EQ 2, but in his own way that has yet to be explained. The Discord invasion did take place, but started before the time split, or when adventurers arrived with the Gates of Discord expansion. Pretty much everything is kept separate, but they keep these things in mind for the story.

* {{Retcon}}: The game was originally meant to take place in the same continuity as the first game, just [[TimeSkip 500 years later.]] It was eventually changed to an AlternateUniverse due to all the potential continuity problems that started to crop up, with certain major events from the first game, such as the Discord invasion, or Mayong Mistmoore becoming a god, never existing in this timeline.

* RetCanon: In [=EQ1=], an expansion called the Gates of Discord introduced the continent of Taelosia. The expansion itself was poorly received, as it was overly difficult, and the developers admitted it was originally designed for a level increase and they didn't have time to balance it. That continent was introduced to EQ's continuity after the events of the Plane of Time that caused [=EQ2=]'s AlternateTimeline, rendering it non-canon in this game. With the Visions of Vetruvia expansion, elements of the continent of Taelosia, such as the Broken Shores, Natimbi, and Qinimi are being preserved but repurposed with a different direction for the continent of Vetruvia. Because Taelosia was introduced after the time split, the developers don't ''have'' to properly replicate and acknowledge it.

I think this is the proper trope. At any rate, Taelosia has been thrown out of canon and a new continent now exists in its place.

* HubUnderAttack: The game makes use of special instances of zones which allows them to be easily repurposed for story reasons, and has used this for live events and other game content.
** In 2009, the game's story saw an unknown force successfully kidnap Lucan D'Lere, the tyrannical ruler of Freeport. Freeport is one of the three evil player cities and serves as the hub, but during this turmoil the entire hub zone was changed into a display of chaos. The Freeport Militia were battling against the Dreadnaughts and other minor factions vying for power and independence from a dictator, and the streets showed destruction and debris. These [=NPCs=] posed no threat to players and were cosmetic, but the city still functioned as normal.
** A similar game event happened to both Qeynos and Freeport in 2013, when [[BigBad Kerafyrm's]] forces of the Awakened had launched an invasion across Norrath. In both cities, the guards were engaged in battle with drakes, drakota, and droags, while dragons flew around in the sky. This was also cosmetic didn't affect the gameplay of the players going about their daily lives.
** 2012 saw a revamp of Qeynos and Freeport in order to update some mostly outdated content. When the game launched, Qeynos and Freeport had racial neighborhoods where the players would live when they started. Those neighborhoods were locked off from players and their homes moved to the Inns in the inner city as a central storyline was introduced for each city. In Qeynos in particular, areas like the Baubleshire, Willowwood, and Starcrest Commune were shut off because there were invading forces and the guards closed off the gates to keep the citizens safe. Certain racial quests and parts of the city timeline allow you to go inside and fight off the undead hordes, gnolls, and demonic invaders. Every neighborhood has some kind of conflict happening.
** The Blood of Luclin expansion brought back the moon of Luclin into the game after being cut off for 500 years, destroyed in a cataclysm, and eventually reformed thanked to time magic. In EQ1, the city of Fordel Midst served as a neutral city and hub for adventurers before they go explore the moon. In EQ2's story, the city had been taken over by the lingering ghosts of the invading army and players had to fight their way through the Nexus, Shadowhaven, and the Bazaar in order to rediscover and secure the city. The Reign of Shadows expansion that came out after now uses a cleaned up and reinhabited Fordel Midst as the hub city and launching point for adventurers to explore the dark half of Luclin's surface.
