** Many of the characters in Daenerys's very disliked Meereenese storyline in "A Dance with Dragons". Dany's Meereenese supporting cast in "A Dance With Dragons" is very unpopular for a variety of reasons -- difficult names, perceived blandness and the idea that the conflict in Meereen is ultimately irrelevant. Daario Naharis draws particular ire for his negative effect on Dany's character.
** Daario Naharis is hated by many readers for a number of reasons, the main being his [[InformedAbility constant claims of being an amazing swordsman]], his [[SmallNameBigEgo arrogance]], his disrespectful attitude towards in-story legends like Barristan Selmy, and his cartoonishly flamboyant descriptions. Despite this, he is adored by Daenerys and therefore takes up a lot of her internal monologue during the disliked [[ArcFatigue Meereen storyline]].

** Dawn Schafer has gained quite a hatedom in recent years, though most of this can be blamed on her {{Flanderization}} from a laid back GranolaGirl to a self-righteous extreme Liberal environmentalist. ** Roxanne in ''My Best Friend Is Invisible'' is the most despised character in the book, and for very good reasons too. She is very abrasive and harsh towards Sammy most of the time, and [[WithFriendsLikeThese despite being his friend]], she is even willing to humiliate him in school by telling everyone about his imaginary friend without a single lick of remorse. While she has become nicer after learning Sammy was telling the truth, that does nothing to make up for the way she's treated Sammy beforehand.

** Jackson and Gillian Gerard from ''Help! We Have Strange Powers!''are loathed by many a reader for being insufferable, lazy, bullying {{Designated Hero}}s with none of even Evan or Sarah's more sympathetic qualities. Worse, they're some of the few protagonists who get superpowers, which they mainly use to bully poor Artie and Nina Lerner, who they hate just for being awkward and nerdy. They only start being nice when it turns out the Lerners have powers themselves. It makes them being pursued for experiments by the villain come off as borderline LaserGuidedKarma.
* Most who read ''Literature/GreatExpectations'' did not like Estella, finding her cold and haughty persona intolerable. There is an in-universe reason for it which makes her a ''little'' more sympathetic, but they also felt that [[Creator/CharlesDickens Dickens]] got really carried away with the descriptions of her beauty, and Pip pretty much falls for her based on her beauty alone even though she treats him with indifference at best. It was the 19th century where young men weren't able to socialize with women like they can now, but this comes across as shallow now. She does go through some CharacterDevelopment that humbles her and makes her more friendly, but this happens at the very end. And off-screen.

** Within the fandom, few characters get as much malice as Merrick, a never-before-seen crossover from a different Anne Rice series who somehow became a titular character. Many fans consider her to be the author's personal MarySue (evidenced by her impossibly beautiful and talented self showing up out of nowhere and immediately becoming beloved by all other characters, including the previously gay narrator, David) and argue that the entire novel reads like bad fan fiction (people behaving out-of-character, presence of a Mary Sue, ridiculously pointless plot [[InsultToRocks even for Anne Rice...]]you get the idea). Fans who had managed to survive past ''Queen of the Damned'' agreed that this novel was the moment the series was ruined and put all the blame squarely on Merrick's shoulders. Cue dozens of FanFics wherein the character is either ignored or killed outright, sometimes to the point of having other characters kill her for being so annoying.

However, the most hated character of the series by far is, ironically enough, the main character Evan Ross. While he's a ButtMonkey who's whom readers are meant to feel sorry for, he loses all likability from the readers due to his incredibly whiny attitude and incredibly dumb decisions (like telling everyone about Monster Blood without contemplating the fact that no one will believe him about) him) that only makes him come off as unsympathetic. In fact, his stupidity in the second ''Monster Blood'' book actually caused many readers to [[RootingForTheEmpire root for Conan over Evan]].
** Sarah Maas, the protagonist of ''The Curse of Camp Cold Lake'', has also gain a lot of basklash backlash due to her incessant whining and selfishness. Her attempt to guilt-trip the other campers by [[TooDumbToLive pretending to drown in a lake]] pushes her even further on into this trope.
*** Of course, her bunkmates don't come off any better either due to their [[DisproportionateRetribution reaction of her minor mistakes she made in the beginning]]. The one who is arguably the most hated of the three, however, is Jan, who deliberately attempted to tip the canoe over to cause Sarah to fall in the lake lake, knowing the latter is a bad swimmer - -- [[DisproportionateRetribution because Sarah accidentally revealed Jan's asthma medication to reveal to everyone that she Jan has asthma]].

** Courtney in ''You Can't Scare Me'' due to her "little miss perfect" Miss Perfect" attitude in the story. Granted, the main characters aren't really likable either due to how pathetic their attempts to scare her become, but Courtney is just too much of a ParodySue for many readers to root for her either.
** Most of the AnnoyingYoungerSiblings due to how irritatingly annoying irritating most of them are, and some are. Some of them even end up causing the [[CruelTwistEnding Cruel Twist Endings]] of certain books.

** Within the fandom few characters get as much malice as Merrick, a never-before-seen crossover from a different Anne Rice series who somehow became a titular character. Many fans consider her to be the author's personal Mary Sue (evidenced by her impossibly beautiful and talented self showing up out of nowhere and immediately becoming beloved by all other characters, including the previously gay narrator, David) and argue that the entire novel reads like bad fan fiction (people behaving out-of-character, presence of a Mary Sue, ridiculously pointless plot even for Anne Rice...you get the idea). Fans who had managed to survive past ''Queen of the Damned'' agreed that this novel was the moment the series was ruined and put all the blame squarely on Merrick's shoulders. Dany is one of the most popular characters in the series. She’s not Scrappy

*** Dany herself to a lot of readers as a matter a fact. In a series where stupidity tends to be swiftly rewarded with predictable results, she gets away with plenty of blunders yet keeps on surviving because she happens to have a very strong army, very competent subordinates and of course, dragons. Far more competent characters can only dream of ever having such resources at their disposal. Her very unpleasant comments on Ned Stark don't help matters, showing how out of touch she is with reality.

Cassie and Ginny are listed as Base-Breaking Characters on their respective YMMV pages, Manny was removed from YMMV.Diary Of A Wimpy Kid, and Michael's parents definitely seem like they're supposed to be hated

* ''Literature/{{Animorphs}}'' has Cassie. A large part of the fandom thinks she's hypocritical and self-righteous and just can't stand her in general. It doesn't help that many of her books are {{Filler}}, and the ones that do give her plot-relevance tend to do it by either giving an AssPull for how she's special (''Megamorphs 4'' making her a "temporal anomaly") or forcibly benching the rest of the team (''The Sickness'', where the other Animorphs were all [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin sick]]). Plus, in the final book, she's [[spoiler:the only character to get a happy ending with the rest of the cast strongly implied to have died in the BolivianArmyEnding]]. All that said, it's generally acknowledged that while her bad books were some of the worst, her good books were genuinely some of the best.

* Manny, Greg's AnnoyingYoungerSibling from ''Literature/DiaryOfAWimpyKid''. He [[KarmaHoudini never gets in trouble for any his actions]], often gets rewarded for his overall behavior despite being a total SpoiledBrat, and always ends up on top no matter the trouble he causes. The most notorious example of this is in ''Cabin Fever'', in which he cuts out all of the electricity to the entire house during a blizzard (and also stealing most of the family's food in the process), thus leaving everyone to die from starvation and hypothermia — and ''still'' suffers absolutely no consequences for doing so. And just the very fact that he hasn’t gotten better in the slightest since ''Cabin Fever'' easily makes him out to be the absolute worst character in the book series for a number of fans. Not to mention that in ''The Long Haul'', he acts as TheMillstone towards the entire family and gets rewarded a pet pig in the process.

** Tara in ''The Cuckoo Clock of Doom'' subverts this trope since her being hated is [[HateSink the whole point of her character in the story]], but Michael's parents definitely gained a lot of detractors due to their constant doting on Tara and treating Michael like garbage, accusing him of lying about Tara's treatment of him and even condoning Tara's cruel treatment of him during his birthday. On top of that, they ''don't even care about Michael being beat up by a bigger guy'', and going back in time, Michael's parents have even treated their son like that even back when he was about four, as when he ties his shoes for the first time during that age, his father's response is "took him long enough!"

* ''Literature/HarryPotter'': A significant portion of the fandom aren't too fond of Ginny Weasley, mainly for her sudden CharacterDevelopment from a ShrinkingViolet to a FieryRedhead (which, to some, came off more as a hasty retooling of her character to make her into the main character's perfect girlfriend) who often receives CharacterShilling for her supposed "talents". Of course, part of the problem is that a) most of the fandom that hates Ginny is fiercely in favour of [[ShipToShipCombat Harry/Hermione]], b) we're limited by Harry's perspective for almost the entire series, and understandably, Ginny hardly registers on his radar between his Second Year (when she was the victim of the Diary Horcrux, and had a massive crush on him) and Fifth Year (when she appears as a more assertive character as part of the DA).
** Dobby, while arguably RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap, is frequently deemed to be annoying at best during most of ''Chamber of Secrets'', making all of Harry's problems that much worse - you can understand why the normally patient and considerate Harry is left briefly homicidal at one point. However, his moment at the end, when he flattens Lucius Malfoy shortly after being freed by accident, helps considerably.

The most notorious example of this is in ''Cabin Fever'', in which he cuts out all of the electricity to the entire house during a blizzard (and also stealing most of the family's food in the process), thus leaving everyone to die from starvation and hypothermia — while ''STILL'' suffering absolutely no consequences for doing so.
