Before we move along, let's establish a baseline for Azeroth specifically, using a recent prominent revival.

Illidan Stormrage:
* Cause: Killed in battle, 2.
* Audience Expectation: You can die in Azeroth if you aren't a PlayerCharacter, 3.
* Body Found: We just left it on top of Black Temple, Maiev apparently locked it in a crystal. 2 for petrified/frozen.
* Reaction: Acknowledgment that the deed is done probably counts as He's Dead Jim, 3.
* Last Words: His NotSoDifferent speech to Maiev counts as FamousLastWords, 3.
* Characterization: His presence in the trailer makes him the defining villain of Burning Crusade, 1.
* When: 5-10 years ago is the range in-universe and out, 3.
* Died and come back: His survival at the end of Frozen Throne was unclear, gives him a 3.

Average: 20/8 = 2.5, solidly in range for returning.

Now let's look at the recent leadership changes in Horde and Alliance.

Vol'jin:
* Cause: He was only injured until we saw how bad it was in the next cutscene, so that's MortalWoundReveal, 3.
* Audience Expectation: Still KilledOffForReal, 3.
* Body Found: MeaningfulFuneral, 4.
* Reaction: It's Personal from Sylvanas (whether or not she meant it) and the Horde (who surely mean it wholeheartedly), 2.
* Last Words: FinalSpeech to the gathered leaders of the Horde, 3.
* Characterization: Even a faction leader can only really count as a Regular, 2.
* When: Same arc, 1.
* Died and come back: The business in Pandaria definitely counts for one, 3.

Average: 21/8 = 2.625, only a little deader than Illidan was, and let's not forget he's friends with his race's death god.

Varian Wrynn:
* Cause: HeroicSacrifice, dammit, 3.
* Audience Expectation: Still KilledOffForReal, 3.
* Body Found: Disintegrated on-screen, 4.
* Reaction: It's Personal from the Alliance, especially Jaina and Genn, 2.
* Last Words: FamousLastWords for sure, 3.
* Characterization: Faction leader is a Regular, 2.
* When: Same arc, 1.
* Died and come back: Vanished-presumed-dead, was half returned, then returned for real. Ought to earn him at least one, 3.

Average: 21/8 = 2.625, exactly the same as Vol'jin. And may I note, compliments to Blizz on managing to give them not just the same overall score, but the exact same spread as well.

Because a fangirl can dream...
Kael'thas Sunstrider:
* Cause: Killed in battle, 2.
* Audience expectation: KilledOffForReal, 3.
* Body Found: Beheaded for a quest turn-in in his final appearance, and Lor'themar's leader short story notes that he was buried on Quel'danas, 4.
* Reaction: He's Dead Jim, 3.
* Last Words: A rather unhinged FinalSpeech, if we're generous, 3.
* Characterization: Recurring at best, 3.
* When: Same as Illidan, 5-10 years ago, 3.
* Died and come back: Memetically so, 3.

Average: 24/8 = 3 exactly. Never say never, but he's probably out for good.

* Reaction: Believe it or not, something close to a ReallyDeadMontage, since the cutscene following death puts a big emphasis on the reactions of to death.
* Last Words: Difficult to say, though FamousLastWords fits best, 3.
* Characterization , 1.
* When did they die?: Difficult to say, though since Arkham City concludes its arc, same year would be the best bet. 2
* Died and Come Back: While ComicBook incarnation has died and come back countless times over the years, , so a 3.
** Final Verdict: Ultimately averages out to 2.625, so its quite possible that body will find its way [[spoiler: Into a Lazarus Pit, or already has.]], though its completely conceivable that this is curtains for the [[spoiler: Killer Clown.]]

Next up is Ras Al Ghoul. Will his body find its way to a Lazarus Pit or not?:
* Cause of Death: A failed attempt at TakingYouWithMe, the best bet is a 2 because of the failure.
* AudienceExpectation: has LikeYouWouldReallyDoIt in favor, though not as much as the character above. However, the added bonus of , so its a 1.
* BodyFound: We see the body, but it quickly goes missing, so its a 2.
* Reaction: FauxDeath to some extent, not because doubts that dead, but because of the aforementioned ability to 1.
* LastWords: Technically an OhCrap, but outlasts his "LastWords" by about 20 seconds, during which completely fine physically and attempts a TakingYouWithMe. So a 3 here.
* Characterization: , 1.
* When Did They Die: A 2 here for the same reasons as the above character.
* Died And Come Back?: Once on screen, countless times in backstory: 1.
* Final Verdict: 1.625. We haven't seen the last of !!! Though probably actually dead for the time being.

On a similar note, next up we have Talia Al Ghul:
* Cause of Death?: Not exactly crystal clear, but matches the most, so its a 4.
* AudienceExpectation: Since lacks the of the two previous characters, its quite possible that might be dead for real in the eyes of the audience. 2 because of other characters apparently cheating death.
* Body Found?: Like body disappears during the boss fight following apparent death, so 2.
* Reaction: ItsPersonal, 2.
* LastWords: Receives wound that kills mid sentence, but lasts long enough to deliver some last words; 3.
* Characterization: Loved One, 4.
* When Did They Die?: 2 for the same reasons as the above characters.
* Died and Come Back?: Nope, 4.
* Final Verdict: 2.625, about as likely as to come back from the dead.

In the first game, we have Tsar Gorgi:

* Body Found: right there, - 4

* Last Words: FinalSpeech - 3
* Characterization:

And next up is the second game's death victim A-Qira:
* Cause of death: Bridge Drop () - 4
* Genre: thanks to , KilledOffForReal - 3
* Body Found: LeftForDead - 1
* Reaction: none given, just doesn't appear in the ending - 2.5
* Characterization: Regular, although [[spoiler:proud]] - 2.5
* Last Words: OhCrap () - 4
* When: same arc, same year by the end of the game - 1.5
* "Died" and come back: nope - 4
* Average: 22.5/8 = 2.81. Assuming we don't see him pull a in the next game if it is made, there's still hope for our good . Though his last words reduce his chances.

Countess Ingrid from the first game:
* Cause of death: Hard to call. The character was beyond salvation, so I guess it would be redemption - 3
* Genre: As stated before, KilledOffForReal - 3
* Body Found: LeftForDead - 1
* Reaction: None per se - 3
* Characterisation: Regular - 2
* Last Words: FamousLastWords () - 3
* When: Same year - 2
* "Died" and came back: No - 4
* Average: 21 points, or 2.625. Given the fact that , it's not too farfetched to see this character coming back.

Lucca, who was apparently killed by Lynx in VideoGame/ChronoCross:
* Cause: SuddenSequelDeathSyndrome, and pretty gratuitous as well, going from being able to punching out Cthulhu to getting killed by some panther furry. I'd say that counts as a Bridge Drop. 4.
* Genre: Well, judging from the first game, DeathIsCheap, but VideoGame/ChronoCross tries to establish an AnyoneCanDie sort of mood, so we'll just average 4 and 1 and say 2.5.

* Reaction: Definitely It's Personal for Kid. 2.
* Last Words: We never actually hear them, but she does leave a parting letter, so... Final Speech. 3.

Dragon Quest IX:
* Cause of Death: Can be seen as No-one could survive being drowned in the trunk of Makes a car. (2)
* Genre: KilledOffForReal (3), it happened
HeroicSacrifice to her and Carlos, as far as the Saints go.
* Body Found?: She's been LeftForDead (1)
* Reaction: ItsPersonal, as far as it makes Donnie hate the Rollerz(2)

* Characterisation: Protagonist (1)
* When?: 5 or 10 years ago by now (3)
* Come back already?: Nope. (4)
* Avg: 18/8: 2.25. She may have survived.

Shogo Akuji, in Saints Row 2
* Cause of Death:No-one could survive a Texas Funeral (2)
* Genre: KilledOffForReal (3), it happened to Lin and Carlos!
* Body Found?: Although on a literal level he has been buried, he is LeftForDead (1)

* Last words: Not really words, but there is a 'oh shit' look on

* Characterisation: CListFodder (3) (at my count there's 10 antagonists, and Dane Vogel would be the BigBad.)

Johnny Gat, in Saints Row: The Third
* Cause of Death: Shot and stuck on a crashing plane, NoOneCouldSurviveThat. 2
* Genre: Lighthearted as the series is, death tends to stick, so KilledOffForReal. 3
* Body Found?: Difficult one, as while a funeral is held for him, no one specifies whether they ever actually found his body for burial. It's either DeadAndBuried or NeverFoundTheBody, so let's split the difference and say
hometown. 3.
* Audience Expectation: KilledOffForReal more than anything else. 3.
* Body Found?: When the blast of light fades after he is hit by the enormous attack, he's disappeared. 2.
*
Reaction: Not much of one, to be honest, although the characters mention avenging him as another reason to stop the bad guys, which is close enough to ItsPersonal through and through. 2
for this algorithm. 2.
* Last words: KilledMidSentence, not good. 4
Words: Gives his FamousLastWords to the hero before giving himself up. 3.
* Characterisation: Technically a regular, but also Eh... In the series' most popular character, grand scheme of things, CListFodder. 3.

* Come back already?: Been through several near-death situations,
'Died' and came back?: No, not that we know of. 4.

That comes to 21, which divided by 8 gives 2.63. Surprisingly low, given the number of threes that he got,

FireEmblem 4's mass slaughter of the player's allies at the Battle of Barhara.

Let's start with Levin:

* Genre: Fire Emblem is noted for it's perma death, but Jugdral is the one universe where the power to bring back the dead can be used more than once. 3
* Body Found: Not mentioned.
* Reaction: His kids are pretty miffed, 2.
* Last words:Not applied
* Character: Regular 2
* When: Over 10 years between the 2 generations. 4
* Died and come back: The player can use the Valkyrie staff on him, but that only happens if they screw up badly enough to get a killed, which is very rare. Not yet: 4
* 20 and 6: 3.3

Now someone who isn't confirmed Ira:
* Cause: Same. 4
* Genre: same. 3
* Body found: The 5th game says at least some of the women at the battle were alive... . Frozen. 2
* Reaction: again, 2nd gen is quite annoyed, 2
* Last words: ?
* Character: Unlike , not a holy weapon holder, so I'd rank her a 3
* When: again, over 10 years in game AND about 10 years IRL, 4
* Come back: Again, not yet. 4
* 22 by 7: 3.142. Hey lives (and is granted) with a higher score... Given her popularity she has a chance if an [=FE4=] (preferably combined with [=FE5=]) remake is done.

For comparison, let's do someone who has come back in the series: Michalis in [=FE1=], [=FE3=] book 1 and Shadow Dragon:
* Cause of death: Killed by Marth's army ([=FE3=] says that canonically his sister defeated him but couldn't kill him). Given that it wasn't until latter that story units got unhealable wounds instead of dieing, reaching 0 HP in Fire Emblem is pretty dead. 2?
* Genre: Anyone can die. 4
* Body found: No mention is given to what happened to it in the original, but said to be cared for by his sister in [=FE3=]. 1
* Reaction: 3 (We really need examples of what warrents what for villain deaths)
* Last words: "Aaagh… I am finished… Forgive me…my people…" 4?
* Character: Major enemy, but this is his first time actually appearing: 3.5
* When: 4 out of universe, 5 in. 3
* Deaths: Not yet 4
* Back for a redemption equals death]]

Now for said death:
* Cause: 3
* Genre: 4
* Found: Yep, I think it's just abandoned given it's a battlefield. 1
* Reaction: Marth just shouts his name. 2?
* Last words: "Your highness... I leave ’s fate to you..." 3?
* Character: I can say he at least somewhat counts as a "loved one" now though. 4.
* When: 6 years between the original and remake, same arc between his "death" and comeback in story. ?
* Deaths: once, 3.
* 20+ "when"'s result. Either a 3 or a 1. 2.8 or 2.6 .

And Hardin:
* Cause: Redemeption (technically not him that was evil, but counts) 3
* Genre: 4
* Found: ?
* Reaction: Not mentioned for a bit, but Camus gives a "He's dead Jim" in the final. 3
* Character: main villain of the arc 1.
* When: Same year. 2
* Deaths: None, 4.
* 17/7 2.4 [[spoiler:he stays dead in both [=FE3=] AND [=FE12=]]].

From , The Avatar, in the "Destroy Grima" ending:
* Cause of Death: HeroicSacrifice due to Synchronization. However, explicitly says it's possible s/he might survive it. 2
* Genre: Awakening still falls under AnyoneCanDie, and unlike some of the earlier games, there's no Aum staff. On the other hand [[spoiler: the Spotpass characters are all Disney Deaths]], but they're dubiously canon, so I'll split the difference and call it a 3.
* Body Found: Disintegrates in plain sight of everyone. 4
* Reaction: A heartfelt farewell and montage with friends and loved ones, but most everyone thinks s/he isn't dead. 2
* Last Words: "May we meet again, in another life..." doesn't say anything about this life. 2
* Characterization: 1
* When did they die?: End of the game. Possibly the SeriesFinale if Awakening didn't do as well as it did. 4
* "Died" and come back?: Nope. Every other time [=s/he=] could have died, it stuck. 4
* 22/7 = 3.14. Surprisingly high considering .

Let's look at Azura from VideoGame/FireEmblemFates (Birthright path):
* Cause of Death: HeroicSacrifice (was using powers that were CastFromLifespan, used them until it killed ). 3.
* Genre: Fates is even more AnyoneCanDie than past games, since it not only lacks a way of bringing characters back, it's not afraid to give your party members a PlotlineDeath (as seen here). 4.
* Body Found: Evaporates in front of everyone. 4.
* Reaction: General shock, horror and sorrow, since it was happening so fast. 3.
* FamousLastWords: Begging the PlayerCharacter not to cry about dying. 3.
* Characterization: 1.
* When did they die?": End of the game. 4.
* "Died" and come back?: Nope. 4.
* 26/8 = 3.25. 's not coming back, and according to the epilogue, doesn't.

Now a look at her death on the Conquest path:
* Cause of Death: Overuse of the same CastFromLifespan powers, though not quite a HeroicSacrifice this time. Average it out to a 2.5.
* Genre: Same as before. 4.
* Body Found: No. leaves so no one has to watch die. 1.
* Reaction: Confusion and wondering where went. 2.5
* FamousLastWords: A subtle goodbye speech to the protagonist. 3.
* Characterization: Same as before. 1.
* When did they die?: Same as before. 4.
* "Died" and come back?: Still the same. 4.
* 22/8 = 2.75. Well, has a better chance of surviving here than in Birthright, but according to the epilogue no one ever saw again.

Private Antony Carmine:
* Cause of Death: Got sniped in the head because a) he was wearing a helmet (and thus lacked peripheral vision), and b) he was dumb enough to stand up in the middle of a firefight. Definitely DeathByIrony. 4.
* Genre: Not really AnyoneCanDie, as the only characters to die are the ones expected to (the RedShirt, the Squad Leader, and the BigBad). Otherwise, though, death is handled realistically, so, KilledOffForReal. 3.
* Body Found?: We see his head burst (or at least blood splatter), but the actual body is left behind for dead (the squad was being shot at and chased off at the time), so somewhere between NeverFoundTheBody and DeaderThanDead. I'd say 3.5.
* Reaction: No real reaction other than brief surprise, since the surviving squad members are busy being shot at. I'm gonna say not applicable.
* Characterization: RedShirt. Carmine is even a shade of red. A definite 4.
* When did they die?: Gears of War 2 takes place, what, a year after the original game? 2.

Dr. Breen in Half Life 2:
* Cause: Last seen trapped in a teleporter device about 50 feet below the epi-center of a massive explosion, so definitely NoOneCouldSurviveThat. 2.
* Genre: No major characters have died yet (Eli's fate is still in limbo until Episode 3 comes out). Alyx was pretty much dead, but brought back to life by the Vortigaunts, so BackFromTheDead. 1.
* Body Found?: Nope. See Cause. 3.
* Reaction: Almost none at all, actually. The protagonists don't celebrate (or even really remark on) his death, although one civilian does miss his show (he used to have jugglers!). No score.
* Characterization: Main antagonist (although ultimately he was just a tool of the Combine), so 1.
* When did they die: Technically, Episodes are expansion packs to Half Life 2, so Same Arc. 1.
* Died and Come Back?: Never happened, because no one's died yet. 4.
* Average: An even 2. I guess we'll be seeing him in Episode 3, so literally Back Next Episode. There's good money that the Combine Advisor in Episode 2 is his new "host body".

Eli Vance, last seen being cranium-raped by a giant alien slug in the DownerEnding of Episode 2:
* Cause: Well, he gave Gordon his final orders, then attacked the Advisor to distract it, so a HeroicSacrifice. 3.
* Genre: Same series, so 1 (see above).
* Body Found?: Episode 2 fades out just as you reach his body, so there hasn't been time to check for a pulse, but he really looks DeaderThanDead. 4.
* Reaction: The game fades out with Alyx's hearfelt sobs over her father's body. This is obviously ItsPersonal, to get us in the mood to kick Advisor ass in Episode 3. The rather down mood also kind of makes it HesDeadJim, too. I'll say 2.5.
* Characterization: Loved One. AND WiseOldMentor to boot. Definitely a 4.
* When Did They Die?: The story is currently right up to his death, so definitely same arc. 1.
* Died and Come Back?: Nope. 4.
* Average: 2.79. I suppose he could just be a vegetable...

Sgt. Johnson's death from the very end of the Halo Trilogy:
* Cause of Death: He makes it to the very end of the trilogy, only to be killed off completely out of left field by Guilty Spark to set up the final battle. Sounds a lot like they DroppedABridgeOnHim, but he also uses his last shot to save Master Chief from Spark, so it might count as a HeroicSacrifice instead. I'll give him a 3.5.
* Genre: Nominally KilledOffForReal, although by the end pretty much everyone is dead except for Chief, Cortana, and Arbiter, so might count as AnyoneCanDie also. Again, I'll split the difference and give it a 3.5.
* Body Found?: Died in Master Chief's arms. Chief never bothered to take a pulse, but I'll assume he's not an idiot and had some way of knowing Johnson had expired and not simply passed out. And then the Halo he died on blew up, although see below... So, DeaderThanDead. 4.
* Reaction: He's Dead, Jim. 3.
* Characterization: Started out as a RedShirt in Halo, but was made a series Regular in Halo 2. 2.
* When did they die?: Doesn't really count, since the series ends after his death. No score.
* Died and came back?: There was that little matter of being on a giant Ringworld just as it gets blown up in a massive explosion, yet coming back alive and well for the sequel. So a definite yes, he's done it before. 3.
* Average = 3.17. Rest in Peace, Sarge. "You were one hard-core son of a bitch".

Cortana:
* Cause of Death: HeroicSacrifice / NoOneCouldSurviveThat. Shields the Master Chief from a nuke. 2.5
* Genre: KillEmAll. Earth's colonies burn, and Earth's own population is reduced to 200 million. Capable, sympathetic people like Sgt. Johnson, Capt. Keyes, and his daughter, Lt. Commander Keyes are killed. Reach is a game in which all of your friends are killed and then you sacrifice yourself. Only Sgt. Johnson has been brought back from apparent death. 4
* Body Found?: NeverFoundTheBody. Cortana herself told John she would not survive the explosion, though. 2.5
* Reaction: He's Dead, Jim. Lasky consoles the Chief on his loss. 3
* Last Words: ObiWanMoment. Cortana uses the last of her strength to say goodbye. 3
* Characterization: Protagonist/Regular. Easily the second-most important character. 1.5
* When Did They Die?: Same year, relative to Halo 5. 2
* "Died" and came back?: Left behind surrounded by enemies on High Charity. 3.5
* Average: 2.75. Probably replaced by "another Cortana model".

Didact:
* Cause of Death: Jumping after taking a grenade to the chest. 1.5
* Genre: KilledOffForReal. 343 Guilty Spark survived the destruction of his installation, but the Prophets stayed dead. 3
* Body Found?: Left for Dead, then nuked. 1.5
* Reaction?: He's Dead, Jim. Cortana congratulates the Chief for saving the day as always. 3
* Last Words: FamousLastWords / FinalSpeech. Attacked by Cortana, he tells her that "Your compassion for mankind is misplaced." "I'm not doing this for mankind," she replies. Voiceover explanation of his motives on the epilogue. 3
* Characterization: Archvillain. A lot of lore has gone into setting up the Didact/Librarian story. 1
* When Did They Die?: Same year, relative to Halo 5. 2
* "Died" and came back?: Once as the Ur-Didact, once as Bornstellar. 2
* Average: 2.13. The Chief hasn't seen the last of him.

well. 3.5
* Genre: AnyoneCanDie, as seen above. 4
* Body: Eventually found years later by . Still very much dead. 3.5
** I'd call that frozen; his helmet was intact, and the planet it landed on was well below the temperature needed to preserve the head inside.

* Died and Came Back: Maybe once if you count that DisneyDeath at the end of [=ME1=].
3
* So 22/8 gives us 2.75. Pretty high score for a main character, and I was being light on some of them.

Let's do Shepard again, this time for really screwing up the suicide mission. WordOfGod is that you can't import a save where Shepard died into 3, so let's keep that in mind:
* Cause: Looks like a HeroicSacrifice to me. Joker probably would've kept on trying to hold off the Collectors and gotten killed either by them or the explosion that takes out the Collector Base, no news would've been brought back. 3.
* Genre: [=ME2=] is reasonably far into AnyoneCanDie territory, so 4.
* Body: Depending on your choice in the endgame (destroying the Collector Base or handing it over to Cerberus), he either fell a huge distance and then got nuked, or just fell a huge distance. 3?
** nuked either way, the question is whether it's a giant bomb or just a giant radiation pulse intended to kill everything but leave their tech.
* Reaction: Get the feeling this is a 3. Judging by the ending, Joker is pretty crushed.
* Last Words: FamousLastWords "Joker, you have to Kyosuke. 3
tell them!" Putting this as a 2.5.
* Characterization: He's Kyosuke's beloved twin brother, so LovedOne. 4
THE hero, pretty much. 1
* When he died: Since Project Justice is When: A bit more than two years ago, but at the most recent game in the series so far and was released close to a decade ago - 4
very beginning of [=ME2=]. Putting this as 1.5.
* Died and Came Back: Once, so 3. They do make a big deal out of how people do NOT come back: The series' back from the dead, and how reviving Shepard is an insane exception, however.
* 2.625. Could come back again, but it'd cheapen his/her
first and only major death resurrection. WordOfGod denies it, so far, and no third let's assume s/he does with so many modifications to his/her body this time that s/he owns all the Reapers bare-handed.

One last run of Shepard, this time at the end of VideoGame/MassEffect3 if the destroy ending is taken:
* Cause: Shepard was sacrificing him/herself to to save the galaxy, making it a 3.
* Genre: This a
game yet to see if it happens.where entire races can be wiped out, guaranteeing a 4.
* Body found: Never found the body, Judging by Tali's reaction, so 2.
* Reaction: Montage.
4.
* Average: 3.4375. His hopes Last Words: Obi-Wan moment fits best here, so 3.
* Characterization: Protagonist. 1.
* When did they die: Same arc. 1.
* Died and came back: Once, thanks to the Illusive Man. 3
* 2.625. The developers have said that this is not the last we will hear
of coming back are as likely as Shepard, so it is possible that Galaxy's greatest hero will return from the dead.

* Characterisation: The recurring villain of the Mario & Luigi series. So a cross between 3 and 1 is... 2.
* When did they die?: Closer to 2 than it is to 3. 2.
* Died and come back?: Fawful has been shown to survive implausible circumstances that should lead to his death before (at the ending of Superstar Saga), but there's a difference between a vague shot of him falling out of Bowser's flying Castle (and remember, he has flying headgear) and actually exploding into little bits. So if we go off time alone then it's 4.

24/8=3. So chances are he's gone for good, but there's just enough leeway for Alphadream to bring back probably their most popular character in the future. Remember, he may have been blown to bits but Bowser spat all those bits out in the air, so no-one knows what happened after that.

Let's pull out all the stops here. How about the King of the Koopas himself?:

Here's a comparison to see whether Luke or Asch made it back

* Genre: AnyoneCanDie KilledOffForReal - 4
3
* Body: 1.5 - would have been LeftForDead, Body Found? Not by anyone else, but one of your team members shoots him again to make sure.shown on screen after death - 4

* Last words: FinalSpeech - 3
* Characterization: Archvillan initially (except he actually isn't) - 1.5
* When: Same arc - 1
* Died and come back: No - 4
* Overall: 3.
** [[spoiler: Well, not so much him as the implants that Sovereign gave him. By that point, Saren's either already gone or in an AndIMustScream situation.]]

And, just for fun since we know the outcome, the first time Commander Shepard dies at the beginning of [[VideoGame/MassEffect2 [=ME2=]]].
* Cause: Do they make bridges big enough to drop on entire ships? That said, Shepard died trying to save Joker, so maybe we could count this as a HeroicSacrifice, as well. 3.5
* Genre: AnyoneCanDie, as seen above. 4
* Body: Eventually found years later by . Still very much dead. 3.5
** I'd call that frozen; his helmet was intact, and the planet it landed on was well below the temperature needed to preserve the head inside.
* Reaction: Got a trope named after it: WeWereYourTeam. 4
* Last Words: "Get the hell out of here, Joker!" 2
* Characterization: Main character. 1
* When: Start of the game count as same arc? 1

WordOfGod is that you can't import a save where Shepard died into 3, so let's keep that in mind.
* Last Words: "Joker, you have to tell them!" Putting this as a 2.5.
* Characterization: THE hero, pretty much. 1
* When: A bit more than two years ago, but at the very beginning of [=ME2=]. Putting this as 1.5.
* Died and Came Back: Once, so 3. They do make a big deal out of how people do NOT come back from the dead, and how reviving Shepard is an insane exception, however.
* 2.625. Could come back again, but it'd cheapen his/her first resurrection. WordOfGod denies it, so let's assume s/he does with so many modifications to his/her body this time that s/he owns all the Reapers bare-handed.

One last run of Shepard, this time at the end of VideoGame/MassEffect3 if the destroy ending is taken.
* Cause: Shepard was sacrificing him/herself to to save the galaxy, making it a 3.
* Genre: This a a game where entire races can be wiped out, guaranteeing a 4.
* Body found: Never found the body, Judging by Tali's reaction, so 2.
* Reaction: Montage. 4.
* Last Words: Obi-Wan moment fits best here, so 3.
* Characterization: Protagonist. 1.
* When did they die: Same arc. 1.
* Died and came back: Once, thanks to the Illusive Man. 3
* 2.625. The developers have said that this is not the last we will hear of Shepard, so it is possible that Galaxy's greatest hero will return from the dead.

Here's a fun one: Legion.
* Cause: Sacrificing itself to give its race sentience. 3
* Genre: AnyoneCanDie, mixed with the knowledge that geth platforms can return to the main hub and cheat death. Heavier leaning to the former. 3
* Body found: Non-applicable for geth.
* Reaction: He's Dead, Shepard-Commander. 3
* Last Words: "I know, Tali. But thank you. Keelah se'lai." An excellent FinalSpeech. 3
* Characterization: Squadmate, but it's closer to RecurringCharacter than the likes of Tali or Garrus. 2.5
* When did they die: Same arc. 1
* Died and came back: As an individual, no.. which is what Legion was when it died/deactivated. Oddly, arguable as either 4 or 1. The game hints much more heavily at 4, though.
* Average: 2.714. The Geth did create the Geth VI to replace Legion if it died in Omega-4 as well, so some rendition of Legion may indeed be coming back.
----

Sgt. Johnson's death from the very end of the Halo Trilogy.
* Reaction: He's Dead, Jim. 3.

* Characterization: Protagonist/Regular. Easily the second-most important character. 1.5

----

A fun contrary example: Private Antony Carmine from GearsOfWar.
* Died and came back?: Nope. Realistically, this is a KilledOffForReal genre. 4.
* Average: 3.42. He should be just another forgotten dead RedShirt. And yet WordOfGod is that he's coming back in the sequel... How's that for accuracy, folks?
* Although "a" Carmine joined Fenix's gang in Gears of War 2, it was not the original Carmine; it was his brother.

----

Dr. Breen in Half Life 2
* Cause: Last seen trapped in a teleporter device about 50 feet below the epi-center of a massive explosion, so definitely NoOneCouldSurviveThat.

Eli Vance, last seen being cranium-raped by a giant alien slug in the DownerEnding of Episode 2.

For the hell of it, let's do from Metroid: Other M
* Cause of Death: Sacrifice: 3
* Genre: Anyone can Die (save Ridley): 4
* Body Found?: No: 2
* Reaction: It's Personal? 2
* Last Words: Final Speech: 3
* Characterization: I'm calling loved one: 4
* When did they die: Same Arc: 1
* Died and Come back?: I'm not counting computer Adam, so no: 4
23/8=2.875, so pretty dead.

And Now Ridley from the same game
* Cause of death: Overkill: 4
* Genre: Anyone can Die: 4
* Body Found: At he morgue pretty much: 3
* Reaction: he's dead Jim: 3
* Last Words: If Ridley could talk, he would've said Oh Crap: 4
* Characterization: Arch-Villian: 1
* When did they die?: Same Arc: 1
* Died and Come back?: I lost count: 1
21/8=2.625, and yet he makes his grand, cloned return in Fusion

One more from the game, just for fun: Anthony
* Cause of death: Jumping, pretty much: 1
* Genre: Anyone can die: 4

* Reaction: It's personal?: 2
* Last Words: C'mon. I'll call it a 2
* Characterization: C list fodder: 3

* Died and come back: No: 4
2.375. And yet, he comes back.

Sephiroth
* Cause of death: Overkill (How many swords did Cloud use, please?). 4
* Genre: Back from the dead. 1
* Body Found: Didn't really have an actual body this time.
* Reaction: It's personal. Geostima? Didn't actually need it, just wanted to mess with Cloud. 2
* Last Words: "I'll never be a memory." 1
* Characterization: Archvillian. 1
* When did they die: Same Arc. 1

1.7142. Mama's boy is coming back, did anyone doubt it?
* He won against the Master and Davros. Yes, he IS that awesome.

Fang and Vanille
* Cause of death : HeroicSacrifice. 3
* Genre : Well, DeathIsCheap is the choice here, since all the "dead" main characters but Nora Estheim come back. 1
* Body Found : Analogous to Frozen. 2
* Reaction : Their part of the ending cutscene and the novella episode i could count as a Montage. 4
* Last Words : They talk to the others after their death and tell them they'll watch them or something, counts as a FinalSpeech. 3
* Characterization : Two protagonists. 1
* When : A little more than a year ago, so… let's say same year. 2
* "Died" and came back : Well, they already went to crystal stasis and came back, so… Once and got better. 3
2,375. They should be back in XIII-2.

While we're on the subject, let's talk about Serah
* Cause of death : Knew that she would die if she continued her journey, but did so anyway, so it's a sacrifice. 3
* Genre : As above, DeathIsCheap. 1
* Body Found : Not applicable, as it happens in front of her companions.
* Reaction : HesDeadJim occurs at the time, while the Requiem Of The Goddess DLC makes it a montage. 3.5
* Last Words : Manages a strained and short FinalSpeech before death. 3
* Characterization : Protagonist. 1
* When : The Ending. 4
* "Died" and came back : Crystal Stasis in the first game. 3
Average of 2.643, so she'll be back sometime soon (assuming there's another sequel of course).

The Nameless One (non finale)
* Cause: Jumping onto a trap to set it off and the like: 1
* Genre: Even for other people, in D&D, DeathIsCheep: 1
* Body Found: Most places you use it it counts as LeftForDead 1
* Reaction: The party member reactions don't really fall under anything, but they are mostly sighs of "here we go again": 1

15/7 2.1 Suprisingly low for flaying.

Almalexia
* Cause: just plain killed in a duel by the player character. I think that's about 3.
* Genre: High Fantasy. Technically in this universe death isn't cheap, but godlike beings tend to pop back into existence more or less often. Let's give her a 2.
* Body Found: Left for dead in the Clockwork City. A clear-cut 1.
* Reaction: No one believed she's dead. 1
* Last Words: a "Piece of cake" speech about how she's going to off Nerevarine. 2
* Character: archvillainess / fallen heroine. 1
* When: In Skyrim's times it's about 200 years after her death. 4
* How many times: Not yet. 4

in Star Wars: The Old Republic
* Cause of Death: Defeat in battle. 2.
* Audience Expectation: Killed Off for Real seems to be the norm for SW characters. 3.
* Body Found: Nope, vanished in a puff of light. 2.
* Reaction: Generally assumed to be dead. 3.
* Last Words: Echoes Malak's dying words. 3.
* Characterization: A former protagonist and one of the most popular SW EU characters. 1.
* When did he die?: Not quite sure how to sort this. Let's say 2.
* Died and come back?: Twice. 2.
Average: 2.25. Even if the SWTOR people don't already plan to bring him back, someone else will.
----

Seth in Super Street Fighter IV, using the events of Juri's ending.
* Cause of Death: Hm... Technically he was simply killed in battle, but it's kind of DeathByIrony that he failed to stop his traitorous henchwoman before she killed him. Let's say... 2.5.
* Audience Expectation: For Street Fighter final bosses, DeathIsCheap. 1.
* Body Found: He lies there twitching onscreen with his crucial Tandem Engine implant smashed to bits (the pothole is justified given how vital it is to him). 3.5.
* Reaction: 'Goodnight sweet prince. Rust in peace.' That's a BondOneLiner, and that's a 4.
* Last Words: Gives a FinalSpeech to Juri about how he knew she was going to betray him (that case why didn't he just kill her first?). 3.
* Characterisation: Technically the Archvillain for SSFIV, but in terms of the whole series he's more CListFodder. 3.
* When Did They Die: The version we're using came out in 2010 so that's, uh, 2.5 let's say.
* Died And Come Back: Nope, first time. 4.
Let's see... 23.5/8 equals... 2.94. Chances have it, Seth is staying dead. Bonus points should probably be added on the grounds that the fanbase disliked him as a whole (seriously, we need some sort of constant that can be added to account for that).
----

Greygnarl is Dragon Quest IX.

Cause of Death: Makes a HeroicSacrifice to protect his hometown. 3.

Audience Expectation: KilledOffForReal more than anything else. 3.

Body Found?: When the blast of light fades after he is hit by the enormous attack, he's disappeared. 2.

Reaction: Not much of one, to be honest, although the characters mention avenging him as another reason to stop the bad guys, which is close enough to ItsPersonal for this algorithm. 2.

Last Words: Gives his FamousLastWords to the hero before giving himself up. 3.

Characterisation: Eh... In the grand scheme of things, CListFodder. 3.

When did they die?: Dragon Quest games tend to be self-contained, so it's effectively the same arc. 1.

'Died' and came back?: No, not that we know of. 4.

That comes to 21, which divided by 8 gives 2.63. Surprisingly low, given the number of threes that he got, but the game would have you believe that he's snuffed it for good.
----

Fawful in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

Cause of Death: Villainous Sacrifice, if we have that - he blew himself up in a last-ditch attempt to kill the Mario Bros. 3.

Audience Expectation: Although Mario baddies don't often stay down (just ask Bowser), the [=RPGs=] tend to get rid of theirs at the end of each game. 3.

Body Found: When he explodes you see the globs of darkness that was all his reduced body consisted of by that stage. Probably comes under ChunkySalsaRule. 4.

Reaction: Celebrations that he's gone, so that's HesDeadJim. 3.

Last Words: FinalSpeech. 3.

Characterisation: The recurring villain of the Mario & Luigi series. So a cross between 3 and 1 is... 2.

When did they die?: Closer to 2 than it is to 3. 2.

Died and come back?: Fawful has been shown to survive implausible circumstances that should lead to his death before (at the ending of Superstar Saga), but there's a difference between a vague shot of him falling out of Bowser's flying Castle (and remember, he has flying headgear) and actually exploding into little bits.

How about the King of the Koopas himself?

* Cause of death: Mario defeats him every time. 2.
* Audience expectation: This is Bowser we're talking about. 1.
* Body found: Not usually. 2.5.
* Reaction: He kidnapped the princess. Of course ItsPersonal for Mario. 2.
* Last words: Usually, nobody talks in Mario games. N/A.
* Characterization: The archvillain. 1.
* When did they die?: He is defeated in every game. 1.
* "Died" and come back?: Oh, hell yeah. 1.
* Death value: 10.5/7 = 1.5. We have a new record.

from VideoGame/TheWalkingDead

to:

* Characterization: Archvillan initially (except he actually isn't) Regular, almost protagonist - 1.5
* When: Same arc - 1
When Did He Die?: Three years ago in-universe, otherwise inapplicable
* Died and come back: came Back? No - 4
* Overall: 3.

And, just for fun since we know the outcome, the first time Commander Shepard dies at the beginning
Average: 3.08

Luke:
* Cause
of [[VideoGame/MassEffect2 [=ME2=]]].
* Characterization: Main character. 1
* When: Start of the game count as same arc? 1

WordOfGod is that you can't import a save where Shepard died into 3, so let's keep that in mind.
* Cause: Looks like a
Death: HeroicSacrifice to me. Joker probably would've kept on trying to hold off the Collectors and gotten killed either by them or the explosion that takes out the Collector Base, no news would've been brought back. 3.
- 3
* Genre: [=ME2=] is reasonably far into AnyoneCanDie territory, so 4.
KilledOffForReal - 3
* Body: Depending on your choice in the endgame (destroying the Collector Base or handing it over to Cerberus), he either fell a huge distance and then got nuked, or just fell a huge distance. 3?
** nuked either way, the question is whether it's a giant bomb or just a giant radiation pulse intended to kill everything but leave their tech.
Body Found? No. - 3
* Reaction: Get the feeling this is a 3. Judging by the ending, Joker is pretty crushed.
They do make a big deal out of how people do NOT come
Characters believe he will be back from the dead, and how reviving Shepard is an insane exception, however.
- 1

* Reaction: Montage. 4.
* Last Words: Obi-Wan moment fits best here, so 3.
* Characterization:
Characterization. Protagonist. 1.
- 1
* When did they die: Same arc. 1.
Did He Die?: Three years ago in-universe, otherwise inapplicable
* Died and came back: Once, thanks to the Illusive Man. 3
* 2.625. The developers have said that this is not the last we will hear of Shepard, so it is possible that Galaxy's greatest hero will return from the dead.

Here's a fun one: Legion.
* Cause: Sacrificing itself to give its race sentience. 3
* Genre: AnyoneCanDie, mixed with the knowledge that geth platforms can return to the main hub and cheat death. Heavier leaning to the former. 3
* Body found: Non-applicable for geth.
* Reaction: He's Dead, Shepard-Commander. 3
And Came back? No - 4
* Average: 2.714. 5

The Geth did create the Geth VI to replace Legion if it died in Omega-4 as well, so some rendition of Legion may indeed be coming back.

Sgt. Johnson's death from the very end of the Halo Trilogy.
results favor Luke.

Just for kicks, Wild Dog:
* Cause of Of Death: He makes it to Blows himself up in a massive explosion at the very end of each game. In the trilogy, only to be killed off completely out latest game, Time Crisis 4, he had a ton of left field by Guilty Spark to set up the final battle. Sounds a lot like they DroppedABridgeOnHim, but he also uses metal debris dropped on his last shot to save Master Chief from Spark, so it might count as a HeroicSacrifice instead. I'll give him a 3.5.
head before blowing himself up. NoOneCouldSurviveThat. 2
* Genre: Nominally KilledOffForReal, although by KilledOffForReal for all the end pretty much everyone is dead except series' other characters. However, for Chief, Cortana, and Arbiter, Wild Dog himself, DeathIsCheap. Oh so might count as AnyoneCanDie also. Again, I'll split the difference and give it a 3.5.
very much. 1
* Body Found?: Died in Master Chief's arms. Chief The heroes never bothered bother to take a pulse, but look. After all, the guy just exploded. NeverFoundTheBody. 3
* Reaction: None (it's an arcade game, not Shakespeare). No score.
* Characterization: Although nominally TheDragon, he's the series' only recurring character and has sort of become the series' mascot, so
I'll assume he's not an idiot go ahead and had some way of knowing Johnson had expired list him as the Arch-Villain. 1
* When Did They Die?: The last game,
and not simply passed out. And then the Halo he died based on blew up, although see below... So, DeaderThanDead.his rate of aging there seems to be a 5-10 year gap between each game, so I'll go with that. 4.
* Reaction: He's Dead, Jim. 3.

* Characterization: Protagonist/Regular. Easily the second-most important character. 1.5

----

A fun contrary example: Private Antony Carmine from GearsOfWar.

* Died and Come
Came Back?: Never happened, because no one's died yet. 4.
* Average: An even 2. I guess we'll be seeing him in Episode 3, so literally Back Next Episode. There's good money that the Combine Advisor in Episode 2 is his new "host body".

Eli Vance, last seen being cranium-raped by a giant alien slug in the DownerEnding of Episode 2.

* Last Words: I forget what his death quotes are, I think they are mostly that dieing still hurts: 1 (though not to sure here)
* Character: Protagonist 1

15/7 2.1 Suprisingly low for flaying.

* Body Found: Left for dead in the Clockwork City. A clear-cut 1.
* Reaction: No one believed she's dead. 1
* Last Words: a "Piece of cake" speech about how she's going to off Nerevarine. 2
* Character: archvillainess / fallen heroine. 1
* When: In Skyrim's times it's about 200 years after her death. 4
