* NotSoPhonyPsychic: When Igg knows his name, Crichton thinks it's a scam and he's just repeating what he overheard from his friends in the marketplace.
-->'''Igg:''' How could I have overhead ''this?'' Your mothers' maiden name was [=McDougall=]. You skipped third grade. And you lost your virginity to Karen Shaw in the back of a minivan!
-->'''John:''' ''(weirded out)'' No, it wasn't a minivan. It was a four-by.

Added DiffLines:

* FantasticRacism: Crais can't cope with how Tauvo was killed by a member of a [[PunyEarthlings weak, inferior species]]. However like in the pilot this seems to be just an excuse to cope with his own failure to prevent his brother's death in a meaningless accident.

Added DiffLines:

* RevengeBeforeReason: Crais goes rogue to continue his quest for vengeance, even murdering his loyal NumberTwo who helped cover up the recall order.

* HowUnscientific: Maldis is one of the most loathed characters in the whole show, for being an outright fantasy villain in a fairly hard sci-fi setting.

* SanitySlippage: The start of Crichton’s. After enough attempts on his life by Crais and prodding from Maldis, Crichton finally snaps and tries to gouge Crais’s eyes out. Last we see of him, he’s LaughingMad.

* BittersweetEnding

to:

* BittersweetEndingBigBrotherWorship: If the recreation by Maldis is accurate, Tauvo thought very highly of his brother and was honored to end up serving on Bialar's Command Carrier.
* BigDamnHeroes: Just as Maldis begins feeding, Zhaan manages to immobilize him and make it so that Crichton can disperse him.
* BittersweetEnding: Crichton and an entire planet are safe from Maldis, but Crais is more determined than ever to hunt down the crew and Zhaan struggles with her newly awakened dark side.

Added DiffLines:

* FreudianExcuse: The reason Crais is so insistent on getting revenge is because his father made him swear to look out for and protect Tauvo.

Added DiffLines:

* UnwittingPawn: Maldis explains that what he wanted out of all of this was the Command Carrier. If Crais packed it in, there'd be no chance of gaining control of the ship, so he used Crichton to ensure that Crais will keep hunting and eventually find his way to this planet.

Added DiffLines:

* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: After sending Crais back and explaining what this was all about, Maldis reminds Crichton about the promise that only one combatant would die. He proceeds to feed on Crichton, though Zhaan soon intervenes.

Also, in a much later episode, it's revealed that Zhaan and Crichton's apparent takedown of Maldis was [[spoiler: a Type 1. In spite of being dispersed, Maldis was eventually able to put himself back together again]].

* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: Liko (along with several of the background characters) is, by all appearances, a red-skinned Delvian with dark red hair (note the similar earlobe design, for instance). All other Delvians that appear later in the show are blue and usually bald or have white hair.

* PoorCommunicationKills: The episode was designed to subvert it. Crichton actually gets to clear up that the death of Crais' brother was a freak accident, but by the end of the episode Crais has another reason to hunt him.

High Octane Nightmare Fuel is now just plain ol\' Nightmare Fuel.

Meanwhile, the duel between Crichton and Crais continues from one end of Maldis' lair to the next; Crichton is always on the defensive and always trying vainly to convince Crais that the death of his brother Tauvo was an accident, while Crais is always on the attack and refusing to listen. At one point, however, when a flaming bottomless pit temporarily ends the duel, Crichton tries again and actually appears to be getting through to Crais; however, Maldis appears and shows Crais a series of illusions designed to get him angry all over again- the first, a memory of his father ordering him to keep Tauvo safe; the second, Tauvo in full uniform, looking pretty happy to see Crais; finally, [[HighOctaneNightmareFuel Tauvo's flaming corpse.]] After managing to escape from the enraged Crais, Crichton finally realises that Maldis is actually feeding on their rage and fear; Maldis confirms this, and also informs him of the fact that the life of one of the two combatants will form the main course. To that end, he offers him a deal; if one of them were to die, the other would be returned to his ship, safe and sound.
