* OurMagicIsDifferent: Magic works by making offerings to the Tree of Beginnings. Unlike most examples, magic is well known of have existed but up until recently people had to focus on it. Not only, the trees select someone to become their mage, basically giving them powerful blessings with little drawbacks.

* ShoutOut: At the amusement park in episode fifteen, there are five costumed performers in the backround that look a lot like The {{Power Rangers}}.

Because she thinks that Yoshino still has a girlfriend, she fears that if she falls fully in love with him, the Tree of Zesturen will kill whoever he's going out with in order to grant her wish.]]

* SufficientlyAdvancedAlien: Suggested in-series as a possible source of the "magical" Trees. [[spoiler:Supposedly the Tree of Genesis is a weapon for neutralizing intelligent species, a [[TitleDrop "Civilization Blaster."]] And the Tree of Exodus is...something else. Both trees are destroyed in the end, and their reason for existing remains unknown.]]

* WorldTree: The Tree of Beginnings...[[RealityWarper Sort]] [[MindScrew of]].

* TheAce: Hakaze. There's a reason Samon had to strand her on a completely hidden deserted island where no significant magic could be used.
* ActionGirl: Evangeline.

* AntiVillain: Samon is a [[SlidingScaleOfAntiVillains Type III]].
* AxCrazy: Mahiro seems to have at least a little bit of this.
* {{Badass}}: Though he tends to get [[TheWorfEffect Worfed]] a lot, the fact that Natsumura nearly took out an entire military invasion force all on his own with his magic definitely qualifies him for this trope.
** Hakaze takes it to an extreme: When Samon ticked her off once, she casually took out a good 3/5ths of a mountain and scared him to tears.
* BadassNormal: Evangeline may not be a magician, or have that much experience with magic, but her vastly superior battle experience means that with the help of just a few talismans, she can still fight on par with fully trained magicians.
** Also, Mahiro and Yoshino. They seem to have been normal high school students before Mahiro's family died, but with the help of Hakaze's talismans, can kick serious amounts of ass.
*** The anime gives them a tendency to pick normal fistfights; they don't seem ''that'' bad off after losing a fight to ''15 opponents''.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: ''Yoshino''. He may seem like a nice guy, but he can be seriously dangerous if he wants to be.
* BigBrotherMentor: Junichirou seems to have been something like this for Hakaze.

* BladeOnAStick: Natsumura's WeaponOfChoice.

* BornLucky: Hakaze, the chosen "royalty" of the Tree of Beginnings, lives under its divine protection, and the laws of nature themselves will bend and [[RealityWarper warp reality]] in order to ensure her victory in all things.

* TheChessmaster: Yoshino, when he gets serious.
* TheChosenOne: Hakaze is the chosen "royalty" of the Tree of Beginnings. [[spoiler: Megumu Hanemura is the Magician of Zetsuen, and therefore TheChosenOne of the other tree. Though the true chosen one was Aika.]]

* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Junichirou. He gives off the image of an easygoing, normal college student and claims to be a TrueNeutral, but also has his own agenda, seems to know a lot more about what's going on than the main characters, and [[spoiler:is a potent MageKiller]].

* DeadpanSnarker: Yoshino.

* HairDecorations: Yoshino has his hair pinned up on the side with four hair clips, clipped on as a pair of X's. Flashbacks imply it was Aika who thought up this hairstyle for him.

* SuperHero: invoked by Samon and co [[spoiler: when they find the Magician of Zetsuen and realize that he wasn't responsible for Aika's murder.]] They decide to begin working against the Tree of Beginnings, as well as take advantage of [[spoiler: the widespread unease that has built up against it]] by having him dress up in a fancy costume and take out [[spoiler: the branches of the tree]] in the most spectacular and public way possible. It works.

* EyelidPulltaunt: Hakase does this to Samon and his gang when they lure her into a situation where she has no technology to sacrifice for her magic. In the process she reveals her tongue piercing, which is enough technology for her to ''blow up the mountain they were standing on''.

* ShoutOutToShakespeare: Shakespearean themes are all over the place. Specifically, the series takes motifs from Theatre/{{Hamlet}} and Theatre/TheTempest (which it's named after), and hardly a chapter goes by where one of the plays is not quoted from. (Yoshino and Mahiro seem to have the entirety of Theatre/{{Hamlet}} memorized, probably because Aika seemed to be quite into Shakespeare.)

** The four leads are based off Hamlet/Laertes (Mahiro), Romeo/Horatio (Yoshino), Prospero(Hakaze, in a case of GenderFlip) and Sycorax/Ophelia (Aika).
