** Don't be so sure. This troper certainly didn't know who destroyed the Temple of Artemis until reading this article. Most average people won't know either. But just ask them who took the Roman republic and turned it into an empire and whos name now means "Emperor" because of it.
*** Okay, so most average people won't know this either, since the average person is TooDumbToLive. But a higher percentage of relatively educated people will know, compared with identifying that guy who did the thing with the burning down of the temple.

** Applicable to a number of ex-members of British post-punk group The Fall, albeit less due to conscious whitewashing than "losing count": The Fall have, since their formation in 1976, gone through over ''fifty members'', most for very short stints. The most notable of these mysteries was their first drummer, "Dave", a man so briefly tenured - and disliked by his band-mates - that no-one is even sure of his real name (it may have been Steven).
** From the release of his first record in 1978 until his live debut in 2004, outsider musician Jandek essentially ''was'' this, as are, to this day, any and all individuals who collaborated with him on any one of his numerous albums.

Added DiffLines:

* A number of outsider musicians have done this ''to themselves'', to varying degrees, some prominent examples being TheResidents, free-jazz pioneer Sun Ra, and reclusive singer-songwriter Jandek.
** Jandek is a particularly unusual case: While the man himself has almost certainly been identified, his musical collaborators prior to his live debut in 2004 remain unknown. Take into account that this man has been making records ''since 1978...''
*** Technically outdone by The Residents (active since at least 1969), but the identities of the group members has been all but public knowledge since the late-'70s. [[EpilepticTrees If they aren't The Beatles.]]
