* LighterAndSofter: Aesthetically and culturally, the 2010s took this route compared to previous decades. Grunge-inspired music genres like NuMetal faded from relevance and made way for ElectronicDanceMusic. The often ultra-violent sci-fi action flicks of the 90s and 2000s, complete with a NinetiesAntiHero, took a backseat to more lighthearted PostCyberpunk and superhero movies. Aesthetically, the sleek, clean 'EverythingIsAnIPodInTheFuture' look replaced the gritty cyberpunk-inspired or hip-hop inspired looks of the 2000s. Politically, the 2010s were far less contentious than they were during the early years of the UsefulNotes/TheWarOnTerror.

** Disney once more became extremely trendy after having Regrown The Beard near the end of the previous decade. The fact that many of the new movies hearkened back to the style of movies they created in the '90s (or the s70s, even the '50s) wasn't missed.

The earlier years of the decade saw a change on what "manliness" meant in the West, while 1990s/2000s-era "lipstick feminism" took a more progressive, less debauched direction and popularized terms such as "empowerment" and "mansplaining", also reclaiming others previously used as slurs such as "witch" and "bitch", although by the end of it, gender conventions in general became openly questioned and defied. Similarly, LGBT characters began popping up in fiction and a number of celebrities came out/transitioned to little controversy, whereas the mere presence of gay characters in mainstream media had been an extremely touchy subject as recently as the end of the previous decade. In some ways, the late 2010s proved to be a turning point for the visibility of transgender and related subjects much like the late 1990's were for homosexuality.

** The 90s practically came back for Eastern Europe and Central Asia - specifically Russia, essentially all other post-Soviet states except perhaps the Baltic states and most especially the former Yugoslavia - except for the fact that this decade was anything but a fun time for them. And while Russia seemed determined to climb back to the status of the former USSR by any and all means (and did quite well, for good or ill), the Baltic states and former Warsaw Pact states such as Poland and the Czech Republic did comparatively well after the EU enlargement and the Balkans somewhat recovered... but for Ukraine, Moldova and especially the former Soviet republics of Central Asia (with the exception of Kazakhstan), things only got worse and worse.

* BoyBand: They came baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack! But unlike the late-90's wave, only Music/OneDirection became notoriously successful; the rest of this new generation of boy bands was generally minimally popular, like Music/TheWanted and Series/BigTimeRush. The only other boy band besides 1D to have any reasonable success this decade were the Australian pop-rock group Music/FiveSecondsOfSummer, their opening act on their second and third world tours and whose status as a boy band is highly disputed. At least, until Kpop boy bands, especially Music/BTS, became extremely popular in the West in the last few years of the decade.

* DeliberateVHSQuality: No one before the 2010's would have romanticized the grainy, tracking line-ridden quality of an overused VHS tape, but due to the 80's nostalgia wave of this decade many in visual media used analog filming techniques such as this for stylistic reasons; standing in direct opposition to ever higher quality flat screen smart televisions on the market. This trope especially appeared in (but was certainly not limited to) music videos, and was a fixture in Synthwave music.

** PopRevival: British IndieRock groups reminiscent of 1960s-era musicwith some of them using analogue synths from the 1960s became quite popular, especially among many rock fans, although many others wrote the genre off as not being rock at all for being LighterAndSofter than the subgenres that dominated in the 1990s and 2000s.

The first uses of the year 2010 surged late in the 20th century as a TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture date as the year 2000 was getting closer, apart from looking for something more original. The word "New" is used to distinguish the 2010s from the 1910s -- arguably unnecessary since there are few people alive who remember TheEdwardianEra (the current oldest living person as of 2019 was 7 when King Edward died, and just 11 when WWI began, and the oldest-known living Brit was 6).

Had to make some fixes and add some things. I added the fact about Brittany Murphy's and Juice WRLD's deaths in the Pop Culture subsection of the Turn of the Millenium section of the History Repeats example, as they are both famous celebrities who died in the month of December in the "9" years of their respective decades (Brittany dying in the Turn of the Millenium in December 2009, Juice WRLD dying in the New '10s in December 2019), drugs being a factor in both of their deaths, their mutual ties to Eminem (Brittany co-starred with Eminem in 2002's "8 Mile", and Juice WRLD being a posthumous featured artist in Eminem's "Godzilla"), and also the fact that they died only shortly after their respective birthdays (Brittany having passed away only one month and ten days after her 32nd birthday, and Juice WRLD just dying six days after his 21st birthday). That also counts as an example of history repeating considering those factors (dying in the December of the "9" year just shortly after their birthdays, drugs contributing to their deaths, and their mutual ties to rapper Eminem).

* BreatherEpisode / LighterAndSofter: Continuing off the overall lighter feel that 2009 had (compared to the majority of the previous decade that 2009 was apart of), many people view the decade's first half (2010 to 2014) as this compared to the majority of the 2000s as well the same decade's second half (2015 to 2019) which were both DarkerAndEdgier by comparison. The world regained a LighterAndSofter vibe (even reflected again in entertainment of the first half of the 2010s), there was less political tension and slightly less fears of terrorism (in most aspects), and many people feel more nostalgic for 2010-2014 (especially the first four of those years - 2010 to 2013) then they did the decade's more tense and turbulent second half (2015-2019). FirstInstallmentWins for a reason, folks!.

* DarkerAndEdgier: The second half of the 2010s (2015 to 2019) was this compared to the first half (2010 to 2014), due to an increase in political tension (which probably became worse then even the 2000s) which even caused many people's relationships to end, and a generally distrustful vibe. This was also reflected in entertainment, due to an increase in dark reboots and political themes.
** This was also a popular trend with many media reboots, and many works aimed at younger audiences featured teen heroes in dystopian societies. The trend may have been kicked off by Film/TheDarkKnightTrilogy, Christopher Nolan’s mature and dark take on the Franchise/Batman franchise.

* WhamEpisode: 2014 was this for a relatively LighterAndSofter first half of the decade, due to having some big heavy-hitting events, not least of which was the sudden death of Creator/RobinWilliams and the Ebola outbreak. Quite fittingly enough, the second half of the 2010s (2015 to 2019) would become DarkerAndEdgier.
