I've been sodomized by Inara from'' ''Series/{{Firefly}}''. ''I drop more F-Bombs than a face-blind Tourette's patient yelling at his own reflection in the mirror."''

When a franchise meant for an older demographic with copious amounts of swearing, erotica, violence and gore, and other such mature nastiness that isn't for children to witness crosses over with a franchise meant for a general audience with hardly any of those things, this results in the creation of a Demographic Dissonant Crossover.

[[MoralGuardians To avoid controversy]], the adult-oriented property is usually {{Bowdlerise}}d. Though, in rare cases, the reverse is true, and the children-oriented property is made DarkerAndEdgier or RuderAndCruder to AvoidTheDreadedGRating.

This is also quite common in FanWorks, as the world of fanfiction gives aspiring writers the ability to combine whatever franchises they are fans of. Fan works, naturally, do not have to worry about adhering to network standards, and can make the child-oriented properties as "adult" as they wish.

This can also happen to a lesser extent with works that are aimed at the same age group, but are aimed at drastically different demographics ''within'' that age group-- different genders, for example.

Compare and contrast MisaimedMarketing. A SubTrope of WeirdCrossover. Super trope to SesameStreetCred, where adult-oriented musicians and creators cameo on a kids show.

* In 2019, Creator/DCComics and Maurício de Sousa Produções published a crossover between their two most popular properties, the teen/adult-oriented ''Franchise/JusticeLeagueOfAmerica'' and the kid-friendly ''ComicBook/MonicasGang'', respectively. While the writing and revised character designs specifically appealed to young children, the plots catered to [[ParentalBonus older readers]] by being chock-full of references to DC's classic stories. Most noticeably, two of the child characters re-enact the famous opening of ''ComicBook/TheKillingJoke'', which is widely regarded as one of the company's most violent and disturbing novels.
* Another DC example: In 2016, DC Comics made a crossover line with Creator/HannaBarbera called as ''Hanna-Barbera Beyond'', where adult ([[JustForFun/NotToBeConfusedWith not grown-up]]) versions of their famous PG shows were serialized between 2018 and 2019, but before that they made ''DC meets Hanna-Barbera'', with one-shot crossovers that could be possible, like ''WesternAnimation/SpaceGhost'' with ''Franchise/GreenLantern'', to utterly bizarre combinations, such as ''Series/TheBananaSplits'' and ''ComicBook/SuicideSquad''.

* ''WebAnimation/TurnaboutStorm'' features Phoenix Wright from the ''Franchise/AceAttorney'' series, which is aimed at teenagers and contains mild innuendo and language, plus a few references to substances such as alcohol, getting transported to Equestria, the setting of the very light, kid-friendly ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic''.
* ''[[Fanfic/EdEddNEddyDevilManCrybaby Ed, Edd n Eddy/Devilman: crybaby]]'' is a crossover between the mildly naughty but family friendly ''WesternAnimation/EdEddNEddy'' with the violent and often sexual ''Anime/DevilmanCrybaby''.

* The adult live-action horror TV series ''Series/{{Supernatural}}'' had a [[Recap/SupernaturalS13E16ScoobyNatural crossover episode]] with the children-oriented ''WesternAnimation/ScoobyDooWhereAreYou'', with Sam and Dean Winchester being sucked into an enchanted television and [[ToonTransformation assuming animated form]]. The episode was tonally very much adult-oriented, with the ''Scooby-Doo'' characters being horrified to encounter genuinely supernatural events and an actual murder.
* ''Series/SesameStreet'' is aimed at kids of preschool and early elementary school age, but there have been a few appearances of characters from works for older people:
** Three skits (one about the letter W, one about body parts, and one about brushing teeth) featured characters from ''Series/HappyDays'' (Fonzie was in all three and Richie also featured in the tooth-brushing skit). While ''Happy Days'' isn't an adult show, it contains risque jokes that make it more suitable for around middle school age and up.
** One skit involves the characters C-[=3P0=] and [=R2D2=] from ''Franchise/StarWars'' visiting. ''Star Wars'' is kid-friendly, but is a bit too violent for kids that young; it's more suitable for ages seven and up.
** The remake of the song "A Monster In My Mirror" features many celebrities whom were very popular at the time the song was produced, including an appearance from ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'', which is a series MUCH too adult for ''Sesame Street'''s audience of children.
* ''WesternAnimation/BluesCluesAndYou'', being a reboot of the original ''WesternAnimation/BluesClues'' series, is intended for the Creator/NickJr audience of young children. So having an appearance from Creator/SamanthaBee on her immensely raunchy late-night political comedy series, ''Series/FullFrontalWithSamanthaBee'' is VERY jarring.

* In its first [[VideoGame/SuperSmashBros64 two]] [[VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosMelee entries]], the ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros'' series was a MassivelyMultiplayerCrossover that only featured characters from child-friendly E rated video game series. Although Samus Aran from the ''Franchise/{{Metroid}}'' series could make one raise an eyebrow.
** ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosBrawl'', however, introduced Solid Snake from the ''VideoGame/MetalGear'', a series notorious for its realistic depictions of the horrors of war and violence, sex, profanity, and tobacco usage.
** ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosForNintendo3DSAndWiiU'' one-upped Brawl with the inclusion of the title character from ''VideoGame/{{Bayonetta}}'', an overtly-sexual and foul-mouthed character whose sex appeal was [[AdaptationalModesty HEAVILY]] [[TamerAndChaster toned-down]] in order not to affect the game's age rating.
** THEN, Joker from ''VideoGame/Persona5'', a game DRENCHED in sex, blood, violence and profanity came to ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate''.
* Any Creator/{{Disney}} [[Franchise/KingdomHearts crossover game]] [[VideoGame/DisneyInfinity that includes characters]] [[VideoGame/DisneyHeroesBattleMode and elements from the]] ''Franchise/PiratesOfTheCaribbean'' franchise becomes this. Being one of Disney's few major {{Cash Cow Franchise}}s with a PG-13 rating, filled with heavy drinking and swashbuckling violence, it makes for quite the disconnect seeing characters from the series alongside Disney's more family friendly fair.
* ''VideoGame/KingdomHearts'', in itself, is also an example, being a crossover of the kid-oriented Franchise/DisneyAnimatedCanon and the teen-and-older ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' games. ''VideoGame/KingdomHearts3DDreamDropDistance'' also adds the equally teen-oriented ''VideoGame/TheWorldEndsWithYou'' to the mix.
* ''VideoGame/SegaSuperstars'' crosses over kid-friendly Creator/{{Sega}} properties like ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'' and ''VideoGame/SuperMonkeyBall'', with characters from the company's properties meant for for older audiences like ''VideoGame/HouseOfTheDead''.
* ''VideoGame/LEGODimensions'' is full of Franchise/{{LEGO}} version of properties that are meant for wildly different age demographics. From kid-friendly fare like ''Film/TheWizardOfOz'', ''Franchise/ScoobyDoo'' and ''Film/ETTheExtraTerrestrial'', to adult oriented franchises like ''Series/TheATeam'', ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' and ''Film/TheLordOfTheRings'', to franchises that are somewhere in-between like ''Franchise/BackToTheFuture'', ''Series/DoctorWho'', and ''Film/{{Beetlejuice}}''.
* ''VideoGame/MortalKombatVsDCUniverse''. Though Franchise/TheDCU had been telling "mature" stories with their properties even back then, having them crossover into the ''infamously'' violent ''Franchise/MortalKombat'' franchise still seems like a strange choice for an actual installment. Of course, DC wouldn't want their characters getting dismembered at the time so this is the only mainline Mortal Kombat game with a T-rating.
* Capcom's side of the ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom'' series includes characters from games all over the rating scales. Ranging from E/E10 series such as ''Franchise/MegaMan'' and ''VideoGame/GhostsNGoblins'' to strictly M-rated ones such as ''Franchise/ResidentEvil'' and ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry''.
* ''VideoGame/PokemonConquest'' is a crossover between the lighthearted, all-ages ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'' franchise and the more serious ''VideoGame/NobunagasAmbition'' series, which is based on historic Japanese warfare and is aimed at teenagers.
* In the early 2020's, Bandai started releasing a number of ''VideoGame/{{Tamagotchi}}'' virtual pets based on video game and anime properties, including a few that fall outside of ''Tamagotchi'''s main demographic of children. Among them are ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'' and ''Manga/DemonSlayerKimetsuNoYaiba''.
* ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars'' is a crossover series that involves pulling HumongousMecha and their pilots from various SuperRobot and RealRobot shows. Naturally it pulls shows that targets difference audiences, although the games usually aim for teens and older, so any adult themes are usually toned-down. For example, in ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsX'' you have younger-age targeted series like the ''Anime/MashinHeroWataruSeries'', ''Anime/NadiaTheSecretOfBlueWater'' and ''Anime/TheBraveExpressMightGaine'' alongside series that target older demographics like ''Anime/CodeGeass'', ''Manga/MobileSuitCrossboneGundam'', and ''Anime/CrossAnge''.
* ''VideoGame/PlayStationAllStarsBattleRoyale'', unlike ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros'', mostly drew characters from games aimed at teenagers and adults, such as ''Franchise/MetalGear'' and ''VideoGame/GodOfWar'', and which are varying degrees of violent and gory. However, a few of the games represented, such as ''VideoGame/ApeEscape'', ''VideoGame/ParappaTheRapper'', and ''VideoGame/LittleBigPlanet'', are targeted toward preteens or even younger audiences. The violence in those games rarely goes beyond cartoonish slapstick, which creates quite a contrast when Sackboy is slapping Kratos around.
