* The Makuta was originally the singular BigBad of Toys/Bionicle, but different writers approached the word's meaning their own way. This overlaps with CharacterizationMarchesOn and UniquenessDecay.
** Initially, The Makuta was more of a figure of legend, Mata Nui's evil spirit brother, and an all-round synonym of decay and destruction. One of the franchise creators, Alastair Swinnerton didn't even want Makuta to be an individual, but rather a concept. "It" gradually solidified into a "he" who was inconsistently called both "Makuta" and "The Makuta".
** Years down the line came the reveal that Makuta was the leader of the Brotherhood of Makuta, an organization of powerful beings who acted as guardians and scientists before turning evil. Being the only ones capable of performing their job, the word Makuta came to mean both their species and their title. They were assigned to different lands and were publicly known as "the Makuta of [place]". The original "The Makuta" was retconned into being a shorthand for "the Makuta of Metru Nui", as most characters didn't know his real name.
** Unlike Swinnerton, writer Bob Thompson claimed he always intended for there to be several Makuta. The reason there was only one at the start is that the in-universe characters were deliberately kept in the dark about his true nature, and thus so was the audience. Makuta was not really Mata Nui's spirit brother, the islanders merely believed that he was.
** The Karda Nui arc revealed his name to be Teridax. However, following the eradication of his brethren as part of his evil plan, he elected to go by just Makuta, as he believed himself to be the LastOfHisKind.
** The Karda Nui promotional ads muddled things up by referring to the several different Brotherhood members as a singular Makuta, falsely implying that characters like Chirox or Krika were somehow different forms of Teridax rather than his subordinates.
** The reboot went back to the idea that Makuta was one character's given name rather than a species or title.

* Lamia was a queen of Libya who became a child eating demon in Greek mythology. Over time she came to be generalized into a broad category of succubi, vampires, and other monsters called lamiae. It also became a name for witches and harlots. "Lamia" or "Lamiae" in the neoclassical sense are usually described as: a) demon women who change into snakes, b) demon snakes that change into women or c) strange half-woman half-snake demon things. But there is something of a "precedent" in similar magical, and/or fire-based birds from other mythologies such as Fenghuang and Suzaku. This also counts for the Native American Thunderbird.
