** This confusion is understandable since throughout "Star Fox 64" enemy characters keep on referring to you as "Star Fox". They mean the entire team, but its easy enough to think that they're just talking about your character. And then there's one instance where Fox is entirely alone, but yet Andross still calls him "Star Fox". Fox himself is only called "Fox" by his allies.

* When the original ''MetalGearSolid'' first came out, some players thought that the title referred to the new model of the namesake mecha, which is actually called "Metal Gear Rex".
** There's no mecha called "Metal Gear 2" in the [=MSX2=] game ''MetalGear2''. However, there is a "Metal Gear 2" in ''Snake's Revenge'', the [[CanonDiscontinuity non-canonical]] sequel to the first ''Game/MetalGear'' for the NES.
** When ''MetalGearSolidPeaceWalker'' was first announced, some fans thought that the subtitle referred to the new Metal Gear tank featured in the game, which is actually called "Metal Gear ZEKE". [[spoiler:'Peace Walker' ''is'' the name of the bipedal weapon you're trying to stop, though.]]

* In ''[[VideoGame/TatsunokoVsCapcom Tatsunoko vs. Capcom]]'' people call Yatterman-1 simply {{Yatterman}}. Yatterman is actually the name of the team, and Yatterman-1 and Yatterman-2 are the aliases. Similarly with {{Karas}}; that's closer to his title or even his race than to his name (Karas are humans empowered by making a contract with the "Will of the City", giving them jurisdiction over a particular city on Earth; the Karas in ''[=TvC=]''--the main character of the OVA--is actually named Otoha).

** It doesn't help that [[http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/SuperMarioRPG?from=Main.SuperMarioRPG Super Mario RPG]] called him Super Mario in the title demo.

* In ''[[CapcomVsWhatever Tatsunoko vs. Capcom]]'' People call Yatterman-1 simply {{Yatterman}}. Yatterman is actually the name of the team, and Yatterman-1 and Yatterman-2 are the aliases. Similarly with Karas, that's closer to his race than to his name,

* The instruction manual for the Sega Saturn port of ''[[TheKingOfFighters The King of Fighters 95]]'' refers to principal villain Rugal Bernstein as "Omega Rugal", even when describing him during the time frame of 94, when he wasn't Omega-fied. Consequently, there are fans who refer to even Rugal's [[strike:normal]] slightly less SNKBoss style Rugal as "Omega Rugal", despite having absolutely no qualities of his 95 or 98 Boss version.

** That one is semi-understandable since the power Rugal harnesses (And what consequently destroys him in the end) is called The {{Orochi}} Power. Of course, all THIS is moot considering that in 95 And 98 Ultimate Match, he has a honking great OMEGA in his lifebar.

** His appearance in the Marvel Vs. Capcom series is as Strider Hiryu as well... until UltimateMarvelVsCapcom3, where it is simply strider, which doesn't help this trope at all. The same game however, refers to kl'rt, a comic character, as Super Skrull, which is his title, so they probably use then names most people know the characters by.

** Lampshaded in ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3'': "I'm Zero, not Mega Man Zero."

* Up to his appearance in ''SuperSmashBros,'' [[FZero Captain Falcon]] was frequently referred to as "Blue Falcon," the name of his F-Zero racer.

** Lampshaded in ''MarvelVsCapcom3'': "I'm Zero, not Mega Man Zero."

* The Bishamon featured in ''[[{{Darkstalkers}} Vampire Savior]]'' (aka ''Darkstalkers 3'') is not actually the Bishamon from the previous game, who managed to free himself from the curse armor of Hanya, but the armor itself, having acquired a conscience of its own. The real Bishamon appears in the ending to ward off the evil spirit that has possessed Hanya.

* ''StarFox'' refers to the mercenary team from the game, not its leader, Fox [=McCloud=].

* The manual for ''Adventures of Rad Gravity'' says "An item you picked up on Sauria will help you defeat the deadly Trogs". Do they mean the rock-throwing reptilian creatures, or the twin robots that are the boss of the level(which require the Crystals to defeat)?

* Not about a person, making it a close one between this and CowboyBebopAtHisComputer, but AlphaCenturai is the name of the sun. The planet's name is Chiron (aka Planet).

* In ''Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family'', the family name is supposed to be Worzen. However, the manual for the localized version, ''LegacyOfTheWizard'', referred only to "the Draslefamily," despite it being removed from the game's title.

* Some people call SonicTheHedgehog ''SonicX'', after the title of the latest cartoon/anime based on the games. [[FourKidsEntertainment 4Kids]] themselves refer to Sonic the Hedgehog as "Sonic X" on their website.

** Whilst never really an issue, a whole meme was spawned off in 2007: [["http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Memes/VideoGames I think Halo is a pretty cool guy. eh kills aleins and doesn't afraid of anything."]]

* ''MegaManZero''. The main hero is not a "Mega Man", and the two words are only added in to [[ViewersAreMorons associate it with the rest of the series.]] [[MyHeroZero After all, the "Zero" handle isn't exactly rare these days...]] The manga made things worse, calling him ''Rockman'' Zero.

* When ''[=~Pokémon~=]'' was at the height of its popularity, there were a surprising amount of people who thought the series name referred to Pikachu and Pikachu alone.

* Up to his appearance in ''SuperSmashBros.,'' [[FZero Captain Falcon]] was frequently referred to as "Blue Falcon," the name of his F-Zero racer.

* The wolf's name is Amaterasu, not {{Okami}}. Okami is simply a title, which means "wolf". Also, [[ViewerGenderConfusion she's female]]...[[AmbiguousGender probably]].
** Make that definitely female; she's referred to as female and a ghost who sees souls identifies her as a beautiful maiden.

** And the primary enemies in ''Hordes of the Underdark'' don't actually have anything to do with the Underdark. The decoy villains do, however.

* [[SuperMarioBros Mario]] is only named Mario, not "Super Mario". (Actually, "Super Mario" is the name for the form he has after he's eaten a Super Mushroom. Still, it's not the character's name.)

* Ryu Hayabusa is not "NinjaGaiden" - gaiden means "telegram," which is how the first game opened.

* ''{{Fallout}}'': The little 50's mascot is named Vault Boy, not PIP Boy, your wrist computer.
