In 1979, Nickelodeon debuted as the first cable TV network to program exclusively for children. Early in its history, it was nicknamed the "Green Network" because of its educational programing. The original logo was a silver ball with "Nickelodeon" in rainbow letters in front of it. Its current logo, until September 2009, [[LogoJoke appeared in any of a myriad of shapes, but was always orange with white letters.]] The current one is now the word "Nickelodeon" in lowercase orange letters, designed in a way evoking the original logo. Its morning preschool educational block, [[NickJr Nick Jr.]], includes ''WesternAnimation/BluesClues'' and ''WesternAnimation/DoraTheExplorer''. During its evening block, NickAtNite, the channel shows old {{Sit Com}}s and dramatic series.

One of Nickelodeon's earliest series, ''{{Pinwheel}}'', featured animation from the United Kingdom and continental Europe (such as ChapiChapo). From the late 1980s well into the 1990s, Nickelodeon's daytime schedule included reruns of half-hour cartoons, such as ''WesternAnimation/InspectorGadget'', ''WesternAnimation/{{Underdog}}'' and ''WesternAnimation/YogiBear'', along with some original cartoons like ''{{Rugrats}}'' and ''RockosModernLife'', as well as {{game show}}s in which young contestants were, more often than not, CoveredInGunge (likely influenced by ''YouCantDoThatOnTelevision'', Nickelodeon's first big hit series). It was renowned during the 90's due to the quality of its original series and gained world-wide prominence among international markets.

Now a Viacom property, Nickelodeon produces its AnimatedShows in-house, and recently has started making {{Made For TV Movie}}s [[FollowTheLeader in the wake of Disney's surprise success with]] ''HighSchoolMusical'' -- ''The Last Day Of Summer'' (a ''Film/GroundhogDay'' clone) sank without trace, while ''GymTeacherTheMovie'' has gotten mixed reviews. They've made several successful treks into theaters under Paramount as well, with their string of Rugrats movies, and the SpongeBob movie. They recently acquired all the rights to anything related to ''TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles'' and ''WinxClub''. They also have a deal with the Saban Brands to air the entire ''Franchise/PowerRangers'' franchise, premiering ''Series/PowerRangersSamurai'' on Nickelodeon and airing previous ''Power Rangers'' seasons on Nicktoons, introducing certain seasons with a marathon going through the entire season at once called a Morphenomenon. ''Series/PowerRangersJungleFury'', ''Series/PowerRangersDinoThunder'', and ''Series/PowerRangersNinjaStorm'' have already been officially aired, with ''Series/PowerRangersTimeForce'' being confirmed to be next on August 17th.
