* TheGreatestStoryNeverTold: Zhou Zishu single-handedly is the reason why everyone is living in a golden era, having set up a scheme to eliminate the catastrophic choices for the throne and holding ground to defend the Capital. Yet, nobody knows and therefore, nobody knows who they are talking to, as now he just appears as a simple man.

* PrecociousCrush: A rather innocent instance. Zhang Chengling sees that Jing Beiyuan is the prettiest person he had ever seen.

* ThirdWheel: The ''fifth'' wheel out of the group.

* RedOniBlueOni: The "Red" to Cao Weining's blue.

Disciple of the Qing Feng Sect.

Disciple ->''“As the poem goes "after a night of wind and bears, how many are the fallen tears"... Since ancient times the word ‘love’ has been the one that hurts the most. But then, what can we do?”''
\\

The junior top disciple
of the Qing Feng Qingfeng Sword Sect.

* BigBrotherInstinct: Downplayed. He's the one to sometimes guide Zhang Chengling and protect him from the neverending assassination attempts.
* BlueIsHeroic: Cao Weining's sect colours are blue.
* EndearinglyDorky: Reciting poetry wrong and mixing it up and having an awkward yet puppy love for Gu Xiang makes even Zhou Zishu find Cao Weining endearing.
* GibberishOfLove: When introducing himself to Gu Xiang for the first time, he keeps stammering and mixing up his own name and title.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: [[spoiler: Cao Weining was not a bit bothered by the possibility of Gu Xiang moving on and living with another person, as long as she's happy, he's happy]].
--> '''Cao Weining:''' That’d be just fine, and I look forward to it. It would be best if she can’t remember a bit of what I look like anymore. Once she passes before me — bright-eyed, worry-free, and happy — and I see her move on, I’ll have no worries, myself.
--> '''[[spoiler:Hu Jia]]:''' You don’t feel unhappy?
--> '''Cao Weining:''' What would I be unhappy about? That’s my wife, not my enemy. How would seeing her be okay make me unhappy?
* KindheartedSimpleton: What he lacks in literature and social awarness, he makes up in kindness and gentleness.
* LoveAtFirstSight: Gu Xiang as much as passed by him and he was instantly smitten with her, reciting poetry in love for her.
* NiceGuy: Not once did Cao Weining treat anyone rudely even when it was justified, always being respectful and trying to mitigate things.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Blue to Gu Xiang's "Red".
* ShipperOnDeck: For Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing. Cao Weining thought they were close brothers, but when that was debunked, he assured that [[NotThatTheresAnythingWrongWithThat he didn't think it was strange anymore]] and proceeded to recite romantic poetry for them.
* SimpleYetOpulent: It's described that Cao Weining's attire and ''xiao'' seem simple yet upon a closer look, they look like they are crafted from the finest material, the ''xiao'' is also [[ConspicuousConsumption obviously made out of jade]] to the common eye.
* SkilledButNaive: For a disciple his age, Cao Weining shows remarkable skill, though in worldly matters, he is not as remarkable.
* TheHeart: Cao Weining is quite gentle and most soft-spoken person in the cast, he tries his best to solve any sort of problem and help when possible.

* CantLiveWithThemCantLiveWithoutThem: Zhou Zishu is always complaining about Wen Kexing's clinginess, yet when he left for a while, Zhou Zishu seemed rather upset and a little disappointed.

* NoBadassToHisValet: While everyone fears the Master of the Ghost Valley, even Gu Xiang herself, Zhou Zishu couldn't care less about that fact, and in fact, doesn't treat him any different than before.

* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: While not as much as Wen Kexing, his ''own'' thoughts often conflict with his actions, and whether he likes Wen Kexing back is ambiguous in earlier chapters for a first time read. Zhou Zishu being a ''tsundere'' also contributes to this.

* ToughLove: At first, Zhang Chengling thinks he hates him due to that, but Wen Kexing assures him that this is simply the way he displays love.
* {{Tsundere}}: A stoic one, but one regardless, to the point that it makes him an ''Unreliable Narrator'' for his own romance.

* LodgedBladeRecycling: [[spoiler: With his battle against Mo Huaiyang, he delivers the final blow by stabbing him with the broken sword that Zhao Jing stabbed Wen Kexing with]].

* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: Partly due to the novel being written mostly in Zhou Zishu's unreliable POV. Wen Kexing with his unreadable face in the first chapters, never states outright his feelings in a manner that's clear, he sometimes plays it as a joke or acts as if he's only in it for the sex. Even if it's debunked, this gives both the readers ''and'' Zhou Zishu grief.

* Determinator: No matter how much he is belittled or rejected by Zhou Zishu, his persistence keeps going on, so much that it makes both Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu unsettled by the fire in his eyes.

* HasTwoDaddies: With one being the strict one and the other being the lenient.

* IJustWantToBeNormal: Zhang Chengling was barely interested in being the hero, in fact, he didn't mind being a normal commoner. The struggle is highlighted when he says that he ''genuinely'' tried to be good at ''Kong Fu'' and his studies, but he's simply mediocre.

* UnexpectedSuccessor: Out of Zhang Yusen's children, Zhang Chengling was the least expected one to carry on the Nanhe Sect's legacy and uphold it.

to:

* YouRemindMeOfX: Zhang Chengling reminds Zhou Zishu of his deceased ''shidi'', Liang Jiuxiao, which is a major reason why he softens up to the boy.

The "servant" of Wen Kexing and the ''Purple Danger'' ''Zi sha'' of the Ghost Valley.

* BadLiar: Unlike her master, Gu Xiang can't ''bullshit'' her way out of a situation, shown when she tried to lie to Jing Beiyuan because she was unsure of his intentions, and he immediately caught onto her lies.

* HornedHairdo: As shown in artworks, Gu Xiang always seem to be sporting that hairstyle.
* HotBlooded: She's very easy to excite and anger, immediately resorting to violence when things don't go her way.

* MeaningfulName: According to Wen Kexing, he found her in a river, hence why he named her ''Xiang'' [湘]. The character is derived from the real Chinese river ''Xiangjiang'' [湘江].

* LikeFatherLikeSon: Like Father, Like Daughter. Gu Xiang exhibits a lot of similarities with Wen Kexing, as he had technically raised her.

* NoIndoorVoice: She even chastises herself for that.

* NotSoAboveItAll: Gu Xiang was puzzled by her master's persuasion and love for Zhou Zishu, until she also fell in love with Cao Weining.

* SatisfiedStreetRat: Having never seen the human world, Gu Xiang is already used to the Ghost Valley's style of living and has no interest of [[MouthyKid abiding by the rules, often calling the more chivalrous sects as the ''so called orthodox''.

* AdaptationalAttractiveness: Under his disguise as stated in the ''EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette'' point, he's far from looking typically pretty. The official artwork however never addresses this and draws Zhou Zishu as fairly healthy looking with no hint of sickness.

* WhipItGood: Not only did he manage to whip Yu Qiufeng, a respectful sect leader, he whipped him ''drunk''.

Last of the Mirror Lake Sect and Zhou Zishu's disciple.

to:

Last
->''“Why do you all want me dead? What did I do? Why can everybody else live, but I can’t?!”''
\\

The youngest son of Zhang Yusen and the last living member
of the Mirror Lake Sect and Nanhe Sect, currently Zhou Zishu's disciple.

* AtLeastIAdmitIt: Zhang Chengling does not contribute any good to the Nanhe Sect, all he does is getting spoilt and pampered, and he ''knows'' that and never denies it.
* BerserkButton: Implying that Zhou Zishu is anything but benevolent does the trick.
--> '''Gu Xiang:''' Nope, that’s not it. His ''shifu'' surname isn't "Zhou", but "Tang". And he’s a top-grade dirty old pervert!
--> '''Zhang Chengling:''' You’re lying! My ''shifu'' isn’t a dirty old pervert at all!
* CharacterDevelopment: Throughout the novel, Zhang Chengling starts going from passive to aggressive, even in his inner thoughts, and if he can't stand up for himself, then he tries to stand up for others and help them.
* CuddleBug: Zhang Chengling never hesitates to leap into the arms of either Zhou Zishu or Wen Kexing when given the chance.
* Determinator: No matter how much he is belittled or rejected by Zhou Zishu, his persistence keeps going on, so much that it makes both Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu unsettled by the fire in his eyes.
* DistressedDude: Everyone seems to either want to kidnap him or kill him, Zhang Chengling's [[NonActionGuy lack of martial arts]] certainly doesn't help with the situation, he's often easily lured into traps and ambushes, with Zhou Zishu coming to the rescue everytime.
* FamilyOfChoice: With the main group, especially with Zhou Zishu, whom he hugs as if he was dearer than his own father.
* FatAndProud: He used to be on the more chubby side and didn't mind it, although he's quickly stripped of this trope when he's on the road all homeless and barely eating anything.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: In a typical ''wuxia'' novel, Zhang Chengling would be the main protagonist and have all the events dedicated to him. This is not the case however, as the focus is on Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing due to it being a ''danmei''.
* HowTheMightyHaveFallen: Within a night, Zhang Chengling goes from being in one of the most powerful sects and protected, to a homeless orphan whose being tossed constantly by greater forces.
* IncompletelyTrained: In contrast to his two brothers, Chengling wasn't the brightest of the bunch, either in the martial arts or educational aspect, he is often looked down upon due to this.
* ImpoverishedPatrician: Zhang Chengling is the son of the deceased great Zhang Yusen... and that's pretty much it.
* InsultOfEndearment: Tyke, little idiot, brat... name it all.
* LastOfHisKind: After the complete wipe out of the Nanhe sect, it is up to Zhang Chengling to save his sect from completely vanishing.
* OrphansOrdeal: One of the most prominent events that kickstarted the chain of events is the massacre of the Nanhe Sect, let it be Zhang Chengling's role as Zhou Zishu's disciple or his role as one of the few who may have an idea about the Lapis armour whereabouts.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: Following the night where Zhou Zishu rescued Zhang Chengling, he instantly took Zhou Zishu as a [[ParentalSubstitute guardian]] and begged him to not leave while crying.
* ProneToTears: Zhang Chengling seems to be always one hair away from crying, he doesn't stop that habit no matter how much [[MenDontCry he's scolded for it]], they aren't always [[TenderTears sad tears]].
* SpoiledSweet: Despite being extremely spoiled, Zhang Chengling is very polite, rarely speaks back and treats everyone with respect.
* SurvivorGuilt: Not only he was the only survivor out of everyone in the Nanhe Sect, he was also the most useless one, as everyone liked to remind him. He finds himself thinking that he should have been the one to die instead.
--> '''Zhang Chengling:''' ''thinking'' If I can’t survive, then I should just die.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: Zhang Chengling is far from being dotted on by the group, however, they all protect him and love him in their own ways as the youngest of the group.
* TheQuietOne: Out of the main characters, Zhang Chengling speaks the least, as he has issues with using words and he takes most jabs without a word.
* TheSoCalledCoward: Zhang Chengling is many things, including being the weakest character and therefore, many expect him to run at the first sight of danger, this is from the case as he's fuelled by his determination and survivor's guilt,
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: No matter how much he cries, [[DoomedHometown there is no home anymore]].

* IRegretNothing: Zhou Zishu doesn't seem to have any [[IDidWhatIHadToDo remorse over]] [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans his actins]]. * AllGaysArePromiscuous: Subverted. Due to his ''ReallyGetsAround'', Zhou Zishu assumes this of him, and that he is only chasing Zhou Zishu for sex.
* AmbiguousSituation: In the novel, it's never stated outright what ''exactly' happened in the Ghost Valley nor what happened with the former Ghost Valley Master, all what's known that it was very ''bad''.

* BarbarianLonghair: In comparison to Zhou Zishu's tied up ponytail, in the official artworks, Wen Kexing's hair is often untied and wild with long bangs that drape over his face.

* CrazyJealousGuy: Played for laughs. Wen Kexing gets immediately jealous if Zhou Zishu as much as looks at someone else or vice versa.

* DelightingInRiddles: This is his means of speaking about Ghost Valley matters with Gu Xiang in front of others. It's also how he keeps playing around with Zhou Zishu.

* HasAType: Wen Kexing prefers his men to be [[TheTwink perfumed, smooth skinned and soft]]. Zhou Zishu is anything but that though, and Wen Kexing finds himself [[TrueLoveIsExceptional in love with the]] sickly looking, eyebags and all, tall and narrow waisted A-Xu.

* BloodIsTheNewBlack: As Wen Kexing exited the quarters of the former Ghost Valley Master, he was drenched in so much blood that others questioned whether it was the robes colours or not.
* CrocodileTears: This is how Wen Kexing resolved the "''conflict''" in the first extra.
* CryLaughing: Whenever Wen Kexing's mask slips, this often happens.
* CurbStompBattle: Wen Kexing has a very brutal fighting style, and the only occasion where he seems to know more formal martial arts were a weak replica of his fathers, Wen Ruyu.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His upbringing in the Ghost Valley alone fits this trope, let alone on how and why he got in there in the first place.
* DisasterDominoes: Since his arrival in the Ghost Valley, Wen Kexing has done nothing but plot his revenge, mastering a chain of events that brought up the conflict and culminate into people over the Lapis Armour [[spoiler: unknown that it has been lost many years ago and it was all in vain]].
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Wen Kexing climbed the ranks in the Ghost Valley until he became it's master and becoming ''TheDreaded''. Even Gu Xiang keeps her distance.
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: Not as much as to become a [[CampGay stereotype]], but enough for Zhou Zishu to question his masculinity multiple times.
* KlingOnPromotion: In order to ascend as the Ghost Valley Master, he uprose and killed the former Ghost Valley Master himself and declared himself as the new authority.
* LoveMartyr: Wen Kexing truly loves Zhou Zishu to the point of obsession, and his façade cracks whenever he's faced with the ordeal of Zhou Zishu's impending death. Thankfully, [[AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther the feeling is mutual]].
* NeckSnap: Wen Kexing's favourite method of execution.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Sometimes borderlines on harassment with Zhou Zishu, it's good to keep in mind that Zhou Zishu can fend off himself.
* PeacefulInDeath: [[spoiler: Wen Kexing embraced death this way when he was about to be killed by the Scorpians, finding no reasons to live after his plans succeeded and Gu Xiang dead]].
* SadClown: In order to cope with his trauma, Wen Kexing often smiles it off and laughs, and tells fictionalised stories of his traumatic past, it's rare when someone catches him off-guard.
* TheTease: Wen Kexing is an extremely flirty man, shameless about his attraction to men, specifically Zhou Zishu.

Added DiffLines:

* LivingEmotionalCrutch: For Wen Kexing, she was the only tie to his humanity.

Added DiffLines:

* AdaptationExpansion: In the audio drama, Zhou Zishu's voice gets noticeably softer as the story goes on, morose in his inner thoughts.
* AllThereInTheManual: Some of Zhou Zishu's backstory can be discovered in the prequel novel ''Qi Ye'', giving more insight on some flashbacks and mentioned names.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Zhou Zishu confesses to Wen Kexing that no one has been this sincere to him in so long.
* BeautifulAllAlong: When Zhou Zishu finally removed his disguise and showed his true face, Wen Kexing was so taken back that he ''had to'' reaffirm his sexuality:
--> '''Wen Kexing:''' Did I... Did I mention to you I like men?
* BroughtDownToBadass: The nails effect on Zhou Zishu caused him to lose two thirds of his martial arts, he still remains to be considerably powerful though, being able to fight off multiple people at once.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Zhou Zishu just can't bring himself to be hurtful towards Zhang Chengling for too long, nor can he ignore Wen Kexing when he's being sincere.
* IceKing: Aside from his cold demeanour and heartless aura, he is described to be cold physically as well. Of course, DefrostingIceKing happens as the story progresses.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Zhou Zishu has a hard time convincing people that there is [[HeIsNotMyBoyfriend nothing between]] him and Wen Kexing, mainly due to Wen Kexing acting in front of everyone as if there is.
* MasterOfDisguise: Zhou Zishu. For a decent portion of the novel, he wears a fake face to hide his true identity that conceals his facial structure, he managed to escape Tian Chuang through this way.
* MeaningfulRename: Not exactly a rename. The character Xu [絮] in his disguise name is the one for ''willow catkins'', it can be taken as a symbol of freedom, as they are weightless and fly away easily.
** It's importance is signified when Wen Kexing keeps using the nickname ''A-Xu'' for him.
* MultilayerFacade: Zhou Zishu at some point wore two masks on top of each other.
* PhysicalScarsPsychologicalScars: The scars caused by the seven nails reflect on how Zhou Zishu prefers this [[AcheyScars path of pain]] instead of remaining with Tian Chuang, as this caused him to be severely depressed.
* StrongerThanTheyLook: Zhou Zishu catches opponents off with his ''remaining'' strength, such as lifting up a man while Zhou Zishu is all skinny and shrivelled up.
* SueDonym: He never thought of an undercover name as ''Zhou Zishu' technically doesn't exist within the court's records, so he gives his own name... with a bit of alteration.
*WouldHurtAChild: It's mentioned that Zhou Zishu is accustomed to ''this'' in regards to killing [[spoiler: Jiang Xue]], a four year old.
*YourDaysAreNumbered: He has seven nails implanted into his body, and has three years to live as they slowly deteriorate his physical and mental health.

Added DiffLines:

* ActionGirl: Gu Xiang is capable of good martial arts, even if they were not par with her master.
* AmbiguousDisorder: Some of Gu Xiang's traits and quirks apply to this trope, she doesn't have a filter for her thoughts most of the time, see NoSocialSkills for more and she often needs Wen Kexing to explain things for her, she is self aware of those traits.
* BeautyIsBad: Despite the [[CuteBruiser appearance of a young maiden with a soft voice, she is quite vicious]].
* DeadGuyJunior: The ''Gu'' in her name comes from Wen Kexing's mother, ''Gu'' Miaomiao, albeit with different characters.
* LastRequest: [[spoiler: Before she dies, she tearfully asks Wen Kexing to kill Mo Huaiyang for killing both her and Cao Weining]]. Wen Kexing fulfils said wish shortly after.
* MistakenForRomance: Zhou Zishu assumes her to be Wen Kexing's concubine at first, that gets debunked rather quickly.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: In the Ghost Valley, she's referred to as ''Zǐ shā'' (紫煞: Purple Danger).
** It becomes an AffectionateNickname when Wen Kexing refers to her as ''his little girl in purple''.
* NeverLearnedToRead: When writing Uncle Li's tomb, she misspelled the word ''righteous'' as ''rightus''.
* NoSocialSkills: Aside from Gu Xiang's lack of literacy, she seems to be questioning of everything around here and constantly asking Wen Kexing for guidance.
** It is also worth noting that the way she wrote Uncle Li's tomb was rather informal, indicating that she was also lacking in terms of traditions.
* PitbullDatesPuppy: Gu Xiang, the ''Purple Danger'', falls in love with Cao Weining, the gentle boy of Qing Feng Sect.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Her [[ColorMotif theme]] is all purple, her nickname and her robes.
* SirSwearsALot: Gu Xiang has quite the foul mouth and never hesitates to use it.
