* RatedMForManly: Their entire lives revolve around mercenary work, and they're very good at what they do.

* ManOnFire: [[spoiler:How Toll Road finally deals with him.]]

* TheTeam: Barney is TheLeader (being the top guy) while Christmas is TheLancer (as he is second-in-command, contrast to the top guy). Among the rest, there are three [[TheBigGuy Big Guys]]: Toll Road (the best hand-to-hand fighter), Hale (the strongest member and with the biggest guns) and Gunnar (the biggest and meanest). They are followed by other three [[TheSmartGuy Smart Guys]], those being Yang (the smallest, but very skilled), Galgo ([[OddNameOut the craziest, but very skilled as well]]) and Doc (the medic). TheHeart and TheChick would be respectively Billy (the youngest and the least jaded) and Maggie (the most down-to-earth, only woman in the team); and finally Tool, being the job organizer, could be considered TheTeamBenefactor.

* TheChick: The main female character of the first film.

* TheDragon: To vilain - aside from being the only one of his minions [[NominalImportance with a name]], he is [[AuthorityEqualsAsskicking easily the second most competent fighter]].

* DashingHispanic: Comes with being played by Banderas, although Galgo's demeanor plays it down, as he alternates between dashing and insane.

* WeaponOfChoice: While all of the Expendables use assault rifles and submachineguns as their primary weapons, each of them uses a particular signature weapon as well.

* WeaponOfChoice: Pistol, both his custom 1911 automatics and his snubnosed single-action revolver.

* WeaponOfChoice: Knives of all types.

* BareFistedMonk: Though not above using guns and knives.

* WeaponOfChoice: [[BareFistedMonk His bare hands]], with a side of [[ImprovisedWeapon whatever is readily available]].

* WeaponOfChoice: Like Lee, [[BarefistedMonk his bare hands]], though with more emphasis on wrestling moves and throws than direct strikes.

* WeaponOfChoice: [[ShotgunsAreJustBetter Shotguns, whether semi-auto or an AA-12 fully automatic]].

* WeaponOfChoice: [[StuffBlowingUp Explosives and grenade launchers]]. He uses a sniper rifle in the third movie, probably in reference to promotional materials from the first film that described him as a sniper. He even mentions using a wrist-mounted computer to check weather conditions.

* WeaponOfChoice: A Barrett M107 SniperRifle.

* WeaponOfChoice: Unlike most other expendables, he doesn't have one. He uses any weapon he can get his hands on.

* WeaponOfChoice: Like Christmas, he's a knife nut and also favours a Steyr AUG.

* {{BFG}}: His WeaponOfChoice. In the beginning of ''II'', he demands Hale to give him his AA-12 automatic shotgun because he just won't use a gun that is not big. He's later seen with the same AA-12 complete with a BadassBandolier [[ActorAllusion much like]] [[Franchise/{{Terminator}} another sequel film of his]].

* WeaponOfChoice: An AA-12 shotgun. He initially takes Hale Caesar's, but he brings his own for the final battle in the second movie.

* WeaponOfChoice: A [=G36C=] assault rifle with multiple magazines clamped together.

* AwesomeMcCoolName: It's not just a pun, it's a pretty cool sounding name too.

* KnifeNut: Lee appears to prefer using his throwing knives to any other weapon.

* WeaponOfChoice: [[KnifeNut Knives of all types]].

* KnifeNut: Though not as obsessed with blades as Lee Christmas, Hale's backup weapon of choice is a shaving razor. In the sequel he is also shown to carry a more normal combat knife.

* KnifeNut: Carries a huge bowie knife. During the climactic airport shootout in the sequel, this appears to be the ONLY weapon he is carrying as backup to his grenade launcher!

* KnifeNut: Not to the same extent as Christmas but he has his moments. He doesn't take part in fighting scenes so this is the only shtick he shows.

* KnifeNut: He's particularly skilled with [[Film/{{Blade}} blades]], describing himself as "[[JustForPun the knife before Christmas]]." He was also apparently skilled enough with them to be capable of giving himself a clean shave, dry, without a mirror, using Gunnar's massive Bowie knife, and ''while on a plane''.

* WeaponOfChoice: Like Christmas, he's a KnifeNut and also favours a Steyr AUG.

* KnifeNut: He seems to favor blades and uses one [[spoiler:to kill Billy]].

* EvilCounterpart: To Lee - both are [[KnifeNut Knife Nuts]] who are clearly the second-in-command in their group.

* KnifeNut: Rarely seen without one.

* BikerBabe: She rides a motorcycle when she meets up with Barney.

* TranquilFury: When he discovers his ex-girlfriend is being abused by her [[BastardBoyfriend new man]], he is ''not'' happy.

* NiceHat: Wears a boonie hat as part of his uniform, and also he wears caps and berets in casual wear.

* AbsenteeActor: For the sequels.

* CIAEvilFBIGood: He's a former member of the CIA who went rogue for personal gain. However, the CIA itself is not exactly evil in those films. It's shady, but Bruce Willis's CIA Agent character is still a heroic figure (especially in the sequel), and Sandra is a CIA contact.

* CIAEvilFBIGood: Averted. Although Church is indeed highly shady and is kind of a {{Jerkass}} (albeit with [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold a heart of gold]]), he is still AFatherToHisMen and is still genuinely trying to make the world a better place. He supports the overthrowing of a [[TheGeneralissimo Latin American Dictator]] and his RogueAgent backer and the prevention of 5 tons of weapons grade plutonium from falling into the wrong hands. He even picks up a gun and fights along with the heroes when Barney calls him a DirtyCoward in the sequel.

* CIAEvilFBIGood: Eventually averted with him; he's an elite-ranking CIA field officer, and unlike [[SmugSnake Monroe]] or [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Church]], he appears to firmly be one of the good guys.

* BaldOfAwesome: Being played by Jason Statham, this is a given.

* BaldOfAwesome: Though it is hard to see due to his uncanny skill to keep his hat on while fighting.

* BaldOfAwesome: Always bald, always awesome.

* BaldOfAwesome: One badass bald guy.

* DeadpanSnarker: Drummer has a very dry sense of humor. Just look at who he's played by.

* BareFistedMonk: A variation. He favors firearms, but has the penchant to combine this with hand-to-hand at close quarters to seize control of his enemies' own weapons.

* BrutalHonestly: Towards himself, as Galgo bluntly admits to Barney that he (Galgo) has no friends.

* DashingHispanic: Comes with being played with Banderas, although Galgo's demeanor plays it down, as he alternates between dashing and insane.

* QuickDraw: Skilled at this.

* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Has a mad amount of enthusiasm, can't communicate without motioning around frantically, often says very bizarre and/or inappropriate things, likes to sing and dance, and never, ''ever'' shuts up.

* PsychoPartyMember: Unlike team members who see their job as a chivalry task at the best or a fountain of thrill at the worst, Galgo claims to be in there just for the act of killing. Then again, given the circumstances of his claim, it's not clear if that is the literal truth or just a desperate way to sell his talents. Considering his background, it might be even a sign that he's not completely on his rocker.

* WeaponOfChoice: Notable because he doesn't have one. He uses any weapon he can get his hands on.

* BadassBeard: By the sequel.

* BadassBeard: Chuck's.

* BadassMoustache: Has a nice 'stache going on.

* BadassMustache: Of the handlebar moustache type.

* NotSoDifferent: Claims that the only difference between himself and Barney is that Barney still has a conscience.

* NonActionGuy: Relatively speaking; he does not get as involved in the action as much as the others, preferring to use his skills with drones and computers.

* TheLancer: Ross's quick-witted second-in-command who, despite his rough demeanor, would be willing to put his life on the line for the sake of his friends.
