* KendoTeamCaptain: Until he [[spoiler:gets expelled]], at least. The trope is played with since he does have many admirers due to his good looks and status as Ohtori's kendo team captain, he's not as popular as StudentCouncilPresident Touga, much to his frustration.

Throughout the series, Miki is searching for a piano partner who can inspire him the same way that his sister did when they played piano together as children; for this reason, he develops a crush on Anthy after hearing her play, but struggles to work out if he wants to love her (as a woman) or possess her (as his personal muse).

* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: It's hard to figure out how sympathetic he's supposed to be. But when your [[ManipulativeBastard best friend]] makes it look like [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone you]] [[WoundedGazelleGambit violently assaulted him]] and gets you expelled to further his own goals, that's a clear sign your life sucks.

** Miki is one of the few genuinely good-natured characters and is certainly the Student Councilor least inclined to use others as punching bags for his own issues. This being ''Utena'', he [[LovingAShadow does]] [[MadonnaWhoreComplex have]] [[MasochismTango flaws]], but he ''is'' one of the few characters that never slaps [[DesignatedVictim Anthy]]. He's also one of the only people aside from her brother that [[AlphaBitch Nanami]] has a respectful relationship with.

* BastardBoyfriend: He claims to love Anthy, but his behavior is more in line with ''this''. In fact, he abuses her physically before Utena defeats him.

* DomesticAbuse: In every continuity, his physical abuse of Anthy is what spurs Utena to try to save her.

* ExtraordinarilyEmpoweredGirl: She's the only duelist [[spoiler:whose Utena never defeated outright]] and nearly defeated Utena herself in a head-on battle, in comparison to [[spoiler:Touga, who only won because Utena lowered her guard due to a flashback of her prince, and Akio was "miraculously" saved by Anthy stabbing Utena from behind when earlier he was put onto the ropes.]] To push it further, she ''easily'' counters the Power of Dios in her first duel with Utena, and when she lends Utena her sword [[spoiler:to face Touga again to win back Anthy]], it's able to withstand the power of [[spoiler:Touga]]'s which was [[TurnsRed charged by the Power of Dios.]] Even after its breaking, the remainder of it can still handle the amount of power, nodding to Dios' "ineffectiveness" on Juri.

Touga is a notorious playboy whose charming and princely presentation is a front for his abusive behaviour and selfishness. As time goes on, he becomes drawn to Utena as she is the only girl in Ohtori Academy who openly resists and challenges his behaviour.
