[[folder:Marek]]
A club-footed slave who works for an apothecary and studies magic. Her dismal circumanstances have not suppressed her keen mind and heroic spirit. After unleashing a mysterious, dark power within herself, Marek must set out and forge a new destiny. Aspiring to a life of freedom and adventure, she decides to help Teela when nobody else will, and is drawn into the struggle against the evil necromancer Szorlock.
----
*BlackMagicianGirl: Marek's magic is mostly offensive, and is partly powered by Necromancy.
*DiedHappilyEverAfter: [[spoiler:After sacrificing herself to destroy Szorlock and the Darkspore, Marek is reunited with Dagen in the afterlife.]]
*DisappearedDad: Marek's father is never revealed, since her mother died giving birth to her with no one else knowing.
*GenderBlenderName: "Marek" is the equivalent of "Mark" in Polish, Czech and Slovak. [[spoiler:In-universe it's a Dwarfish word for "crooked," given by Hammerhead on account of her leg.]]
*GrandTheftMe: [[spoiler:After fully absorbing Teela's life force to fuel powerful magic, Marek unknowingly carries Teela's soul inside of her. Teela briefly takes possession of her throughout ''The Iron Crown'', even managing to heal Dagen, until Marek releases her spirit into her new body.]]
*HandicappedBadass: Heroine Marek is club-footed, with a brace on her leg and using a stick to walk at the beginning. Over time however with training she becomes nearly as mobile as any able-bodied person (magical aid is possibly involved then as well). She does ask if Teela can heal her, but when this turns out to not be a possibility it doesn't faze her. It helps in that her weapon is magic, but she's quite capable physically as well.
*HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Destroying the Darkspore with the Hammer of Tek means destroying herself, but Marek chooses to save the world and her friends by sacrificing her own life.]]
*KungFuWizard: Marek is both a powerful magician and a skilled fighter, blending the disciplines together in battle.
*TheLeader: Marek gathers the party to help Teela, and from there leads them to defeat Szorlock. She sometimes struggles with this role and agonizes over her choices, but Dagen reveals they all look to her faithfully for guidance and inspiration — even her mentor, Gojun.
*MadeASlave: It turns out that Marek was sold as a slave [[spoiler:by Hammerhead]] after her mother died giving birth to her. She grew up in slave camps and was eventually sold to an apothecary, then later a pimp who had much worse intentions for her than just being an assistant.
*MagicStaff: Marek is given one by Gojun Pye that is able to magically retract itself to be carried more easily. It's inscribed with runes and channels magic.
*MissingMom: Her mother, a gypsy thief, died giving birth to her. Marek tries to understand who her mother was from the conflicting stories that are told to her. [[spoiler:Gojun explains she was a hero in the end.]]
*NayTheist: Marek expresses rage over them not coming to help when Szorlok is waging war on the living, and says mortals may be better off without them at all.
*{{Necromancer}}: Marek is a natural-born necromancer, [[spoiler:as she was infused with the power of the Lich King's Darkspore while in her mother's womb.]] Her dark powers are a continuous source of conflict for her.
*RavenHairIvorySkin: The hero of the series, Marek is a beautiful girl with light skin and dark hair. [[EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette Her necromantic powers also deepen the contrast]] and conflict with her otherwise good-hearted nature. In the beginning she is a humble, enslaved cripple, but in the end her leg has been healed and she's an accomplished adventurer and magician.[[/folder]]
[[folder:Thane]]
A disillusioned Vitalian soldier who defends Marek from thugs and is unjustly imprisoned for his trouble. Marek frees him to help her save Teela's sister. He finds new purpose with the party, and helps them defend the realm from evil.
----
*BadassInDistress: He is a grizzled, veteran soldier and the main fighter of the team. The plot of ''The Necromancer'' is driven by his capture by Peregus Malister as revenge. The others must do a job for Malister while he holds Thane hostage, and Thane remains captive until the end.
*BarbarianLonghair: Thane keeps his long hair loose, and rather disheveled in the beginning (as an embittered soldier and escaped prisoner). He is the mighty swordsman of the party.
*TheBigGuy: Thane is a large, mighty soldier and is introduced taking down a group of men with relative ease. He serves this role on the team, typically attacking enemies directly while Dagen shoots arrows and Marek prepares a magical attack.
*DrowningMySorrows: His heartbreak over Teela sends him deep into his cups.
*FlorenceNightingaleEffect: When Thane, on the brink of death, is healed by Teela, he says she's beautiful and thanks her reverently. From then on he's clearly fallen in love with her.
*HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:At Battlegrave, Thane and Dagen drink poison and die so their souls can find the Hammer of Tek in the Underworld. He has to trust that Teela can bring them back to life.]]
*HeroicVow: He's bitter over his oath to the Vitalian Empire, but makes a heroic vow with Marek to do good and live a life of dignity. He later dedicates himself to Teela and Ana-Sett and is named a paladin by the goddess.
*HotForPreacher: Thane falls in love with the beautiful Teela. Her religious vows complicate things between them.
*KnightlySwordAndShield: Thane, a trained soldier, prefers fighting with a sword and shield, even proclaiming that dual blades are no match for them. The shield also proves an effective defense against magic.[[/folder]]
[[folder:Dagen]]
A greedy half-elf rogue who finds himself recruited onto Marek's team for his unique skill set. At first only seeking riches and a life of leisure, he falls in love with Marek and becomes a faithful companion.
----
*BowAndSwordInAccord: Dagen is a great archer and also skilled fighting with blades. In ''The Godslayer'' he finds a special longsword in the thieves' guild, to replace his other weapons.
*TheCasanova: Dagen is introduced with another man's wife, and is continually shown having seduced women over the next films. [[spoiler:Eventually he settles down with Marek in the afterlife.]]
*ChildByRape: Dagen was born to an elven woman held in a brothel as a sex slave for soldiers.
*DeadpanSnarker: Practically everything he says is some kind of witty, cutting remark.
*DiedHappilyEverAfter: [[spoiler:Dagen and Marek both die saving the world from Szorlock. They are reunited in the afterlife on a beautiful beach, as Dagen had dreamed for them.]]
*DisappearedDad: Dagen has no idea who his father was, as a sex slave's child.
*DualWielding: He usually fights with two knives when in melee combat.
*HalfHumanHybrid: Dagen is a half-elf, son of an elven mother and an unknown human father.
*HeroicBastard: Dagen, though a bit of a knave at first as he's a thief and lech, turns out to be quite heroic, while born to a sex slave.
*HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:At Battlegrave, Dagen and Thane drink poison and die so their souls can find the Hammer of Tek in the underworld. He chooses to remain in the underworld to get the answers they need, which means Teela cannot bring him back to life.]]
*LovableCoward: Dagen's a skilled fighter and no stranger to danger, but the party's often outnumbered or outmaneuvered so he reacts accordingly, often for comedic effect. He's charming, but his self-interested nature means he won't easily risk his skin for others. He becomes more heroic over the series, especially for Marek's sake.
*MissingMom: Dagen's mother hung herself when he was a little boy to escape the life of a sex slave.
*NayTheist: Dagen says he never thought that the gods really listened to prayers.
*OlderThanTheyLook: Dagen (a half-elf) says he's in his early seventies, but looks perhaps thirty at most. It's possible he's joking though.
*SonOfAWhore: His mother was a sex slave.[[/folder]]

----
*BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:Teela's lingering spirit is transferred into a new, identical body — though now with blonde hair — found within the Temple of the Owl. This is all by the power of the goddess Ana-Sett, who shares the body with her mortal priestess. Even after Szorlock destroys Ana-Sett, Teela remains alive.]]
*BathingBeauty: In ''The Darkspore'' she is shown bathing outdoors while Thane keeps watch for her. She presumably bathes more than anyone else, as Thane complains that her daily routine is unsafe. She claims that Ana-Sett demands it.
*CombatMedic: Teela is a healer, but also trained in combat by her religious order.
*DamselInDistress: She is not a passive victim but does find herself in this situation. Like her sister, she is imprisoned by the ogre, along with Thane. At Mondiatha, she is poisoned and held hostage by Kishkumen until the party can find the artifact for him. At the Golgotian mine, she and Dagen are captured by Szorlock.
*FacialMarkings: She wears dotted markings around the outside of her eye.
*GoodShepherd: Teela is a priestess and healer devoted to Ana-Sett, the goddess of light. She encourages and counsels the party along the path of good. She naturally takes issue with Marek's dark power, but is able to see the goodness in Marek despite that.
*TheHeart: She is a [[TheChick feminine]], compassionate, peacekeeping presence in the party, and tries to keep them on the right path.
*HealingHands: She lays her hands upon the wounded to magically heal them.
*HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Teela willingly sacrifices her life force to Marek — greatly empowering her — in order to save Dagen. This also heals Marek's leg completely.]]
*HolyHandGrenade: With Ana-Sett's power, Teela is able to attack with golden magical energy, as seen in ''The Godslayer.''

*NaughtyNuns: Teela is a chaste, pious priestess, and also very beautiful. She says her goddess demands that she bathe regularly.
*NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler:Teela's spirit linger's inside Marek, and occasionally takes possession of her, after she's fully absorbed by Marek's necromancy. A new, identical body for Teela is found inside the Temple of the Owl (though her hair is now blonde). This new body is shared by Teela and the goddess Ana-Sett herself.]]
*SimpleStaff: Teela's weapon of choice is a wooden staff with an owl icon at one end, representing her goddess. Unlike Marek's, it doesn't seem to be magical.
*TragicKeepsake: Teela's amulet of Ana-Sett, [[spoiler:first when she's captured by the ogre and finally after she dies.]]
*WhiteMage: She is a priestess of Ana-Sett and gifted with faith-based healing magic.
*WhiteMagicianGirl: Support character? Check. Healing magic? Check. Carries a staff? Check.[[/folder]]
[[folder:Gojun Pye]]
A wizard who teaches Marek the ways of magic, and counsels her on necromancy and the fight against Szorlock.
----
*HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:He drags Szorlock through a portal to another dimension and keeps him there while Marek's team takes the Darkspore to safety. Szorlock eventually absorbs his life force, but this allows Gojun's spirit to linger inside Szorlock and possess him long enough for Marek to deliver a killing blow.]]
*KungFuWizard: He is both a powerful magician and a skilled fighter. Szorlock admits his physical strength is an asset.
*MagicStaff: Like other magicians of his kind, he channels magic through a special wooden staff.
*MentorArchetype: He is a wise and powerful wizard who teaches Marek. He counsels her on her dark powers and how they need to stop Szorlock.
*MentorOccupationalHazard: [[spoiler:Gojun Pye is killed fighting Szorlok before he can train Marek any more.]]
*MrExposition: As a key figure in the larger story, he explains the history of Szorlock and the Darkspore and imparts the direness of the situation to Marek and the others.
*NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler:After being defeated and absorbed by Szorlock, Gojun's soul lingers inside him. He's able to contact Marek and take possession of Szorlock for a brief time so he can be destroyed.]]

[[folder:Szorlock]]
An evil necromancer who will stop at nothing to reforge the Darkspore and gain the almighty power of the Lich King. He forms a mysterious link with Marek and tempts her to join his side.

*EvilSorcerer: He's a magician and necromancer turned to evil. He's after the Darkspore to become the next Lich King and rule as a god.
*TheHeavy: Szorlock is the main antagonist of the series. He creates the conflict, torments Marek through visions and dreams, and has a deep history with Gojun Pye.
*GodhoodSeeker: Not only satisfied with all the dark powers of the Lich King, Szorlock rages against the heavens to rule and be worshipped as the one true god.
*LargeHam: Matthew Mercer engages full scenery-devouring mode as the Big Bad, Szorlok.
*MagicStaff: He carries the reunified pieces of the Darkspore — an ancient, powerful relic — atop a wooden staff.

----
*AnAxeToGrind: He is introduced decapitating a ruffian by throwing his large axe.
*AntiHero: While cynical and grumpy, he's an old friend of Gojun Pye and seems to generally be on the side of the good guys. However, he's lost faith in those who would stand against Szorlock, and decides to take the Iron Crown of the Dwarves for himself. He sends mercenaries after the final Darkspore piece (which pits them against Marek's team) so he can trade it for the Crown. [[spoiler:Also, while he took pity on Marek's mother and provided food and shelter, he immediately sold the baby into slavery.]]
*BadassBeard: He is a mean but legendary adventurer and fighter with a long dwarven beard.
*BigOlEyebrows: He has huge bushy eyebrows, likely as a dwarven trait.
*RetiredBadass: A former hero and member of the legendary Red Thorns, Hammerhead now runs a tavern and provides work and bounties to younger adventurers. [[/folder]]
[[folder:Caeryn]]
A priestess of the Order of Ana-Sett. When her temple is attacked by a necromancer, she's entrusted with safeguarding important artifacts, but is captured. She asks her younger sister Teela to find help.
----
*AlmostDeadGuy: [[spoiler:Soon after parting ways from Teela, Caeryn is set upon by Kishkumen. Teela senses something is wrong and finds her sister dying. Caeryn informs Teela that the necromancer took the Darkspore, before passing away in her arms.]]
*DamselInDistress: Her capture by evil forces drives the story. Teela goes to Hammerhead's Inn to find help to save her, and finds Marek, who gathers a team. She's discovered to be imprisoned in the ogre's cave.
*GoodShepherd: A holy priestess devoted to Ana-Sett, the goddess of light. She is entrusted with bringing the Darkspore to a paladin for safekeeping, and shows great selflessness in this mission. Teela explains she was called to serve Ana-Sett. Caeryn shares wise words and exhibits a kind, faithful soul.
*PursuedProtagonist: Caeryn escapes her temple with a piece of the Darkspore, and a secret map that shows the location of another piece. Mekru Nom and his orcs pursue her for these artifacts, so Teela is sent to find help. [[/folder]]
[[folder:Qole]]
An elven warrior rescued from mischevous faeries by Marek and the party. Owing his life to Marek, he joins their quest to find the Darkspore in the ruins of Mondiatha.
----
*BadassInDistress: He's encountered by the party wrapped head-to-toe in a cottony cocoon by faeries as they prepare to cook and eat him. He seems like a [[DistressedDude hapless victim]] until he's freed and later reveals himself to be a brave warrior.
*BladeOnAStick: He wields a [[DualWielding pair]] of spears as weapons, which plays into his NobleSavage characteristics.
*TheComicallySerious: Qole is very stoic, unlike the wisecracking Dagen, willful Marek and passionate Thane. In one scene he just continues meditating while Dagen and Thane get into a scuffle behind him.
*FacialMarkings: Qole has several ornate tatoos on his face. He tells Marek they are from the shaman who raised him, to protect him from dark powers.
*LastOfHisKind: Qole says he is the last of the Garun-Dan elves. Dagen claims he's lying and is actually an evil Druchii. [[spoiler:Qole's actions prove he's good.]]
*MrFanservice: The handsome elf is introduced shirtless, revealing his big, glossy muscles as he tears himself out of the cocoon he was trapped in. Marek and Teela are [[EatingTheEyeCandy left rather dumbfounded]] by this.
*TheQuietOne: Qole is taciturn, and seems to put a lot of thought behind his words.
*RomanticFalseLead: He and Marek share a strong attraction, making Dagen jealous, and she seems to choose him over Dagen [[spoiler:until Qole is killed off.]]
*SixthRangerTraitor: Qole is rescued by the party and joins them, lending his fighting skills and knowledge of the land. [[spoiler:He is secretly working for Kishkumen, the "shaman" who raised him, and gives him the Darkspore to absolve his debt and lift his "curse." Ultimately he stands with the party against Kishkumen, but that doesn't stop Dagen from attacking him for his betrayal.]]
*TheStoic: He is always calm and quiet — even when facing down a dragon. He's resolute in his beliefs, and confident in his abilities.
*TallDarkAndHandsome: The aloof Qole embodies this trope with a bit of a NobleSavage style, and serves as Dagen's romantic rival for Marek.
*YouSaidYouWouldLetThemGo: [[spoiler:Qole gives the Darkspore to Kishkumen under the impression that he would spare Marek's party, stating that Kishkumen gave his word. Kishkumen attacks them anyway.]] [[/folder]]
[[folder:Ana-Sett]]
A benevolent goddess of light, worshipped by Teela and her Order. She aids the mortals in the struggle against Szorlock.
----
*AnimalMotifs: Ana-Sett is represented with owl motifs, likely for the owl's association with wisdom and vision.
*GodInHumanForm: She is reborn to dwell in the world among mortals, [[spoiler:sharing a body with Teela.]]
*GodIsDispleased: Ana-Sett withdraws her blessings from Teela when she becomes intimate with Thane, which brings Teela down to normal during ''The Necromancer''. [[spoiler:Teela's selfless act of sacrifice rectifies this.]]
*GodOfGood: She is a benevolent goddess of light and healing, concerned with righteous matters. While not perfect, she is a strong force for good and stands against Szorlock.
*GoldAndWhiteAreDivine: Ana-Sett is associated with brilliant gold and pure white.
*HealingHands: A benevolent goddess, she lays her hands upon the wounded to magically heal them.
*HolyHandGrenade: The holy Ana-Sett is able to attack with golden magical energy. Marek describes her magic as sanctified, unlike her own arcane and necromantic magic.
*LightEmUp: Ana-Sett is a goddess of light, and her powers are imbued with golden light.
*RightlySelfRighteous: Ana-Sett is a benevolent, immortal goddess who — unlike the other gods — is willing to directly join the mortals in the fight against Szorlock. However, she exhibits some haughtiness and jealousy, and is rather inflexible. [[spoiler:She eventually decides Marek is a liability and attacks her. Marek does give in and help Szorlock destroy the gods (in part due to being so cruelly attacked) until her friends get through to her.]]
*SharingABody: [[spoiler:Ana-Sett helps Teela's spirit survive and delivers a new body for Teela and herself to share, which is identical to Teela but with blonde hair. She explains she is reborn to dwell among mortals in order to help them win against Szorlock. [[folder:Peregus Malister]]

*LeaveNoWitnesses: He murders Captain Purio — who was already on death's door — then sets fire to the hospital tent, which will kill the other wounded men inside. This enrages Marek, as Betylla explains "No witnesses." [[/folder]]
[[folder:Zombie Girl]]
A beautiful young noblewoman abducted by Admiral Borlund Hess aboard her mechanical war wagon. She is somehow zombified after drinking water tainted by a Darkspore, and remains in the party's care aboard the wagon.
----
*CoveredWithScars: [[spoiler:After helping Dagen fight off a demon, she is caught and mutilated by the demons and left behind. She reappears at the wagon heavily scarred, her zombification apparently helping her "survive" the attack. After the Darkspore is destroyed, she is released from the dark magic and horrified at her condition.]]
*FriendlyZombie: After she drinks the tainted water, Marek states she's brain-dead, and she becomes a docile, mindless shell like the other victims. This effectively makes her a more likeable character. Dagen forms a strong attachment to her like one would with a pet. She also aids them by moving a kart out of the road with [[SuperStrength superhuman strength]], and defends Dagen from a demon by ripping its arm off. They keep her around until they give the wagon to refugees and entrust her in their care.
*NoNameGiven: We never learn her name. She is zombified before identifying herself to her rescuers, so the party simply calls her Zombie Girl.
*RoyalBrat: She appears and acts highborn, claims to have an influential father, and wants to be returned to the palace of Kingsway, so she may be nobility or royalty. She is also a mean, feisty, entitled, bigoted brat to both her abductor and her rescuers. Dagen comments that her zombification is actually an improvement for her. Her sometimes heroic behavior as FriendlyZombie with the party may hint at hidden depths, but she does [[AlternateIdentityAmnesia revert]] to being this after the Darkspore is destroyed. [[/folder]]
