The leader of the three protagonists, collectively known to fans as the Hellrune Coven, sixteen year-old witch Melissa Hellrune and her friends have been transferred to Artemis Academy for causing a school-wide gender bending incident back at their old {{Ghoul School}} [[EerieCuties Charybdis Heights]]. Once at the top of the social ladder, Melissa has immediately found herself little more than a nobody at Artemis Academy. Refusing to let her queen bee status go she immediately begins plotting on how to take down Faith Abbott, the student council president and the single most popular girl in Artemis Academy. To top it off she and her friends have to keep under wraps that they're witches in a school for monster hunters.

* AlphaBitch: She used to be this back at her old school and though still the alpha of the coven Cerise's continuous popularity grabs succeeding make it seem as though even that is starting to slip through her fingers.
** Though her own successes at getting popularity in ways she wasn't comfortable with are starting to tilt that momentum back to her (the victories over Rain in "Muscle Witch", and both Charity and ''Cerise herself'' in "Two Words" are signs of it). She's not used to Tiff hugging her or being tossed up in the air in victory.
** LovableAlphaBitch: She may have crossed into this when she revealed while getting a "truth message" that [[spoiler: she no longer cares about being top dog and is more worried about what's becoming of her friends.]]
* AttackReflector: Can do this with the help of the Wand. [[spoiler:Proves useful when she reflects some of Cerise's BlackMagic back at her.]]
* BeatThemAtTheirOwnGame: Jacqui said this was what Mel did when she defeated Rain (used no magic but pure combat ability to beat the Haughty Combat Corpswoman). Reflecting Cerise's fireball back at her could be another example.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Mel wanted the power of Artemis Academy and [[http://www.magickchicks.com/strips-mc/you_stupid_school got it.]] Unfortunately, that PLUS the Wand she didn't know she had then let her know [[OhCrap something's wrong.]]
* BlondesAreEvil: As evil as you can expect a popularity-obsessed high school girl to be.
* BreakTheHaughty: This seems to be the basic goal of her and the Hellrune Coven being sent to Artemis Academy in the first place. It's debatable if its working but its certainly frustrating her to no end.
** Subverted, in that [[spoiler: the Principal of Charybdis Heights sent the Hellrune Coven there [[TheMole specifically to gain information on what goes on at Artemis Academy]] - their minds are simply wiped after reporting in each time.]]
** '''Double''' Subverted in that The Wand is intent on forcing Melissa into becoming a better person... whether she wants to or not.
** And played with given her latest EerieCuties appearance lamenting she hates the Wand, Tiff and that there are no boys in Artemis Academy--and she misses boys. A big fall from where she was on top at Charybdis Heights.
* CantGetAwayWithNothing: Nothing she's planned has worked out the way she's wanted so far. The fact that Cerise has the exact opposite happen only seems to amplify her frustration.
** Recently she had to face Cerise in combat duels...and it was ''Cerise'' who got served HumblePie thanks to the Wand deflecting her own attack back to the redhead.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: As a result of training with Tiffany, she can punch the ground hard enough to make big chunks of rock rise up.
* ChekhovsGun: The magical girl dream from the first page twice now. The first time during her fight with Faith, and then [[spoiler: when it turns out she really ''is'' a {{magical girl}}.]]
* CrocodileTears: [[http://www.eeriecuties.com/strips-ec/let_me_make_this_up_to_you Has a spell to generate these when she wants to manipulate someone]].

** Mel judo-flips Rain without thinking, then launches into kung-fu against her. All the while she's not sure [[HowDoIShotWeb how she's doing it.]]
** Facing Cerise's big monster, she pounds the ground to throw up boulders at it--and make it go "sob sob." She then uses the Wand to send Cerise's fireball back at her.
* DaddysGirl: ironic for a witch, doubly ironic in that her "Daddy" isn't a daddy at all.
* EmpathicWeapon: The wand she discovers in an early storyline turns out to have a mind of its own, including forcing her to train with Tiffany every morning and showing an image of Tiff dead to guilt-trip Melissa into helping. When Mel faces Cerise, it appears within grab range--and given Cerise then goes for her Fireball to end the fight, Mel doesn't shoo the wand away--and uses it to send that fireball back at Cerise.
** MorphWeapon: She sees the wand turn into a sword when Ash asks for one, but decides of a better way to stop a frenzied Brooke. [[spoiler: Getting it to become a magical megaphone, [[SonicStunner she screams]] "SNAP OUT OF IT!" at Brooke to stun the melusine.]]
* [[spoiler:HalfHumanHybrid: Well, she's probably technically fully human, but half of her actual bloodline is that of a witch, while the other half is of something else...]]
* HasTwoMommies: Subverted. Melissa doesn't know her "father" is a woman, and Dakota has geassed her repeatedly with a magic talisman to keep her from finding out.
* HumiliationConga: She's been on one from the word go, but now she's hit her low point when its revealed [[spoiler: that she's a {{magical girl}}, complete with an embarrassing outfit.]]
** This is an odd example since it's been an absolute nightmare for her, but she has a great number of girls at Artemis singing her praises...which is exactly what she wanted in the first place, just not how she wanted to get there.

** At the beginning of the comic, she wanted to overthrow Faith and take her position as Artemis' [[AlphaBitch 'queen bee'.]] [[spoiler: Now she has it... ** Speaking of Faith, Mel used to want nothing to do with her. Now she's gone at a time when Melissa could use her help the most. Both for defeating [[spoiler: [[BigBadFriend Cerise]]]] and to teach her the responsibilities of being [[spoiler: the new student council president.]]
** Melissa also used to [[http://www.eeriecuties.com/strips-ec/wheatgrass_juice complain about Tiff and her insane workouts.]] Now she's gone too, along with the student council. And there's no telling when, or if, any of them will return. Well, Melissa, [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor how's that for service?]]
* InstantExpert: She already knew she was getting physically stronger thanks to her training with Tiffany, but much to her own surprise, she has also somehow become a KungFuWizard.
* ItsAllAboutMe: She's determined to become Artemis Academy's [[AlphaBitch 'Queen Bee']], by overthrowing [[SmugSuper Faith.]]
** [[spoiler: [[ItMakesSenseInContext A quick massage that focuses on pressure points that stimulate truthful answers]] reveals that she no longer cares about that and is more concerned that she's been wronging her friends recently...then she freaks out when she realizes what she just said.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She may be petty enough to be concerned with something like being the top of the social chain at school, but when [[spoiler: Hekate mind-controls two students to kill Faith and Tiffany and destroy the wand]] Mel admits to not wanting the two of them to get hurt; which says a lot, since she's determined to [[spoiler: dethrone Faith.]]
* KungFuWizard: With the help of the wand and Tiffany's training, she is capable of kung-fu and judo moves, despite knowing nothing about martial arts. Even depowered, she'd probably be deadly.

** The first time, she just tapped into the power of Artemis Academy and it [[PowerIncontinence overwhelmed her,]] turning her into a wild, mindless force of power even Faith got concerned about. Mel is only stopped when The Wand's taken out of her.
*** And later Professor Delatorre finds out a Level Nine Magical Event happened around the time Mel got the wand. [[spoiler: Which this was.]]
** After she's shown to be a true MagicalGirl, The Wand thinks Tiffany is a good role model to train with and uses Tiff to train Mel's previously "porcelain doll" body to be more able to fight ForGreatJustice. This involves getting Mel to go through TrainingFromHell whether willing (she's not) or even conscious (when The Wand senses Tiff one night Mel's still asleep as Tiff does "night training" to help Mel [[TimeToUnlockMoreTruePotential become a better fighter even without magick.]] It looks like Mel's doing all this in her sleep or at least with her eyes closed). Once Mel finds out about the night training and realizes what happens, she's not happy about it.
* PowerLevels: Though she's unaware of it she's [[spoiler: generated a level nine magical event that has the Artemis staff on edge.]]
* PowerMakeover: Of a comedic torment variety. Mel got taste in clothes keen enough that Hekate puts up with her antics for this and she's ''vain''. As such, she loudly objects when whatever she wears is transformed into [[http://www.magickchicks.com/strips-mc/the_magic_thingy_agrees something more utilitary]]. Her opinion on the MagicalGirl outfits is that [[http://www.magickchicks.com/strips-mc/hero_get_a_kiss she'd rather run around naked]], [[http://www.magickchicks.com/strips-mc/most_unorthodox thank you very much]].
** AmazonianBeauty: She hasn't quite reached that stage yet, but Mel is ''[[http://www.magickchicks.com/strips-mc/muscle_witch_-_chapter_8 not]]'' a fan of the AmazonianBeauty look, [[NoGuyWantsAnAmazon preferring to look like a porcelain doll]]. She gets very upset with Tiffany when her muscles start tightening as a result of all the training Tiffany has been making her do.
*** She's definitely getting there, as shown when she [[StunnedSilence stuns the crowd (and herself)]] by [[spoiler: [[http://www.magickchicks.com/strips-mc/the_dud dropping Rain in seconds flat!]]]] Seems all that training with Tiffany's beginning to pay off.
*** Her recent combat duel with Cerise has her able to punch the ground to shock the class and Cerise again (and scare Cerise's beast while at it), and bouncing Cerise's fireball back at her shows she's there--with the class enjoying her performance.
** PowerGlows: Twice, but the big one is [[spoiler: [[http://www.magickchicks.com/strips-mc/wake_up_wake_up when she finally gets a hold of the wand!]]]]
** SphereOfPower: When she got the wand.
* PyrrhicVictory: Her main goal is to increase her popularity and become Artemis Academy's new AlphaBitch. But just about everything that has gotten her more popular have not been things she enjoys, making her victories feel hollow.
* ShockwaveStomp: What does Mel do when Cerise conjures a giant beast against her? [[GroundPound Punch the ground]] and cause a good bit of Earth in the form of major boulders to [[http://www.magickchicks.com/strips-mc/sob_sob rise up!]] And cause said beast to go, "sob sob".
* SquishyWizard: [[FlawExploitation Originally played straight and exploited by Faith]]. But after a bunch of training from Tiffany, [[NoSell it gets averted]] to the [[StunnedSilence shock of all present]].
* [[UngratefulBastard Ungrateful Bitch]]: Mel tells the cat the Wand's done nothing to fight Faith. What did it do instead? Give her a dumb costume, control her body, and ruin her love life (obvious downsides). She then adds, "Teach me kung-fu, improve my grades, make me popular at school..." and thinks THOSE might not be QUITE as bad (though possibly not enough to counter the earlier disadvantages). What tilts her into this? Breaking the 3-3 tie with the cat bothering her Siamese as a downside.
* {{Unpaused}}: When exposed to the [[spoiler:Wand]] in the middle of a conversation, she falls into a trance. When the [[spoiler:Wand]] is taken away, she resumes her conversation as if nothing happened until she notices the person she was speaking to is no longer there.

Childhood friend of Melissa and the second of the protagonists sixteen year-old Jacqui is for all intents and purposes a stereotypical boy crazy high school girl. Like Melissa, Jacqui is a witch who specializes in illusions and glamour. Unlike Melissa and Cerise, Jacqui doesn't seem nearly as concerned with rising to the top of Artemis' social system. Usually the ditz of the group Jacqui's attention span is about as long as the distance to the nearest cute guy. Though easily distracted her moments of competence raise questions of if it's just an act or not...

The third and final of the protagonists, fifteen year-old witch Cerise Darkshade may very well be even more ambitious than Melissa in climbing the social ladder. With a plotting streak that would make Starscream himself proud, Cerise seems to be constantly thinking of ways to overthrow Melissa as leader of the Hellrune Coven and has even used her as a shield against a gender bending beam during the Charybdis Heights incident. Now at the bottom of the social ladder with Melissa and Jacqui, Cerise has set her sights beyond the coven and is now focused on the ultimate victory of reaching the top of Artemis Academy before Melissa can.

** The ambiguity is starting to fade. Following [[spoiler: her kissing Calista]] she remarks at how nice it was before immediately starting to rationalize it. While helping Mel pick out a dress for a date with Ace, she says, "Kissing girls is just fine! I mean, at least girls are gentle, soft and smell nice!" Which gets Jacqui wanting to try kissing girls--and both Cerise and Melissa telling her "PASS!"

She even spilled the secret that she, Mel and Jacqui were witches, turning the the Student Council on them. Then she used Skye's mind controlled animals in an attempt to get rid of them permanently via teleportation circle.]]
* BreakTheHaughty: Her first Battle Duel defeat by Melissa when her fireball gets BOUNCED back at her.
* TheChessmaster: Cerise sets up ASimplePlan that takes her closer to her goals then any other by manipulation. * EvilRedhead: Most certainly the most manipulative and generally mean of the Hellrune Coven. Melissa had her moments, but e.g., the possibility of "backstabbing" Tiffany didn't even occur to her until Cerise did it.
* GreenEyedMonster: Turns out she not keen on being second banana to Melissa, which dates as far back as when they were pre-teens.
* {{Irony}}: Melissa seems to have pretty much dropped any effort to regaining her queen bee status and, though she's not fond of Cerise's haughtiness or her methods to get popular, doesn't seem to care either what Cerise does now. But Cerise can't get over how Melissa usurped her former AlphaBitch status and antagonizes her over reasons as petty as a few of the students liking her.
* ItsAllAboutMe: [[http://www.magickchicks.com/strips-mc/hope_it_pleases_you A picture is worth a thousand words.]] It's bad enough that she's [[UnwittingPawn using Callista]] to climb Artemisis' social ladder, but she stoops as low as to use [[spoiler: a nude painting of herself]] to hog the spotlight, at her girlfriend's birthday party!
