* ATasteOfTheirOwnMedicine: Subjects all of the Hinata's tenants to one to punish them for their constant abuse and mistreatment of Keitaro.

* HairTriggerTemper: She gets extremely angry easily and with minimal provocation, and usually deals with it by beating the crap out of Keitaro.

* FunnyForeigner: From the fictional Molmol Kingdom, complete with occasional forays into random customs from her home country. She also speaks in a shaky Kansai dialect, due to being taught Japanese by Kitsune (who's from the Kansai region).
* GadgeteerGenius: Among other things, she's created Mecha-Tama and a turtle-tracking radar.

* LaceratingLoveLanguage: She's pretty much known for her violence, and struggles to come to terms with her feelings towards Keitaro as a result.

* CanonForeigner: She's an anime-original character. She does make a {{cameo}} in the manga in the final chapter during her sister's wedding.

* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: He's supposed to be the temporary manager of Hinata Inn while his grandmother is away, but he doesn't do much of that onscreen and spends most of his time studying for entrance exams. Much of the day-to-day management seems to be done by Haruka instead.

* AmbiguouslyBi: Kanako being head-over-heels in love with Keitaro is indicative of her being attracted to men; however, as noted in DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnFemale below she also molested the other Hinata residents and was implied to have all but raped Motoko while disguised as Naru in order to torment them. It's not certain if she's genuinely a bisexual or a straight girl who's homoerotic actions towards the Hinata girls are a case of PragmaticPansexuality.

A 19-year-old member of the Hinata House and a freelance writer. Trickster, troublemaker, and professional layabout. In contrast to her best friend, Naru, she revels in her [[IHaveBoobsYouMustObey assets]], and is not above using every scheme in the book to get her way, or at the very least make the house less boring.

* ActionGirl: She stands out as a trained swordswoman all the more in a non-fighting series. It comes in handy at least once when she had to fight off a {{Demonic Possess|ion}}ed Naru.

* ContraltoOfDanger: Motoko is the most action-oriented girl in the series and has the deepest voice out of anyone in the UnwantedHarem.

* WhipItGood: She almost never takes it out, and she's reluctant to even pretend that she'd use it, but she's clearly skilled -- she answers the phone with her whip, from across the room.

* {{Ronin}}: He failed entrance exams for the University of Tokyo twice, then on his third attempt. [[spoiler:[[ThrowTheDogABone He finally passes the fourth time around]]]].

* UnwantedHarem: Averted and subverted. In the beginning, he was very happy to live along beautiful girls. In the progress of story, he started to focus on Naru but he still wants to live in Hinata Inn with all girls as close friends.
* WillTheyOrWontThey: Keitaro and Naru are very attracted to each other from early on, but his AccidentalPervert moments, {{Moment Killer}}s from other characters and Naru's diehard {{Tsundere}}ness keep them from making any real progress and becoming a couple until the final volumes of the manga. * RedHerring: Both the manga and anime present clues that guide the audience to assume Mutsumi is the promise girl, since she was friends with Keitaro at Hinata Inn when they were little and unlike Naru, Mutsumi is the same age as Keitaro which makes it more possible that she could make the promise with him (since Naru was just two years old at the time). To top it off, Mutsumi reveals she did make a promise to go to Tokyo U with another kid. [[spoiler:The truth starts to become clear when Mutsumi reveals the one she made her promise with was a ''girl''. Mutsumi pushed Keitaro to make his promise with their younger friend at Hinata Inn, but after a few years, the real promise girl forgot about it and Mutsumi made the promise with her again. In case there were still any doubts, the final volume confirms the promise girl was Naru all along.]]

* {{Ronin}}: Like Keitaro, she failed her entrance exams two years straight, though not due to poor academics, but due to mishaps (such as failing to write her name) and her condition (fainted just before the exams started).[[spoiler:She ultimately passes at the same time as Keitaro and Naru, and breaks the news to both of them in Pararakelse.]]

* BunnyEarsLawyer: You'd think someone so prone to spacing out or not noticing things like gaping head wounds to be so good at, well, nearly everything.

* WillTheyOrWontThey: Keitaro and Naru are very attracted to each other from early on, but his AccidentalPervert moments, {{Moment Killer}}s from other characters and Naru's diehard {{Tsundere}}ness keep them from making any real progress and becoming a couple until the final volumes of the manga. * ForgetfulJones: He can be somewhat forgetful, such as forgetting to pay Keitaro and having some trouble remembering his name.

* CompetingWithACorpse: Back in college, Haruka and Julia [=McDougal=] were both in love with Seta, but he would only choose one of them when he turned thirty. However, Sarah's mother passed away soon after. When Seta does propose marriage to Haruka after turning thirty, Haruka violently rejects him because it doesn't feel right for her to "win" because [[DeathOfTheHypotenuse her only love rival is long dead]]. It surely doesn't help Seta is raising Julia's daughter as his own. [[spoiler:She does come around and marries Seta in the final volumes.]]

* InsistentTerminology: Dislikes it when Keitaro calls her "aunt" instead of "Haruka-san", possibly due to being both an OldMaid ''and'' his older cousin.

* OldMaid: She ''hates'' being reminded of her single status and being called [[MaamShock "Oba-san"]]. [[spoiler:In the end of the manga, she marries Seta.]]

* RaisedByGrandparents: Her parents died when she was young and Grandma Hina adopted her, meaning that she is simultaneously Keitaro's first cousin and his aunt.
