* {{Bokukko}}: She calls herself by the masculine pronoun "boku" in the Japanese version, despite being not particularly boyish herself. At one point Yūichi tries to convince her to use more feminine pronouns, but she ends up being uncomfortable with this.

* GirlsAreReallyScaredOfHorrorMovies: Gets freaked out watching one. Considering her mentality is that of a child…

* AdaptationalNiceGuy: The 2006 anime sands down some of Yūichi's rougher edges, dailing back his more cynical and smug moments somewhat, while portraying him as a more empathetic guy from the get-go.

* BoobsOfSteel: She's the best endowed of the main girls, and also the only one known to possess any sort of fighting ability.

* CrashIntoHello: How she first meets Yūichi or, rather, how she meets him ''again'' after not seeing him for seven years. It becomes an obviously invoked trope when Ayu keeps doing it on purpose, making it a RunningGag for a while when she keeps trying to tackle hug him. 'Trying' because he is prone to dodging.

* DeadAllAlong: [[spoiler: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]. The reveal of her accident and her generally ghostly behavior imply this, but she turns out to be AnAstralProjectionNotAGhost, and thus NotQuiteDead.]]

* TheGlomp: Her usual method of saying hello to Yūichi. She combines it with a running tackle. A running tackle that he often dodges.

* MeetCute: Ayu often meets Yūichi by [[CrashIntoHello colliding with him head-on]] while running away from an irate taiyaki vendor she accidentally stole from.

* BoobsOfSteel: Is the best endowed of the main girls from Kanon, and also the only one known to possess any sort of fighting ability.

* SilkHidingSteel: Always calm and gentle and though assertive, she never raises her voice in anger.

* TheComicallySerious: Doesn’t show a lot of emotion, at least early on, but definitely has some humour.

* KindlyVet: Her dream to become a vet is one of the biggest signs of the warm heart she hides beneath her cold exterior. Yūichi is disbelieving when he learns about it, so she whacks him with the veterinary book she's reading.

* TomboyishPonytail: Wears a ponytail and is a capable fighter.

* WhenSheSmiles: When she’s happy, her smile really shows it.

Mai's best friend (with whom she has a fair amount of LesYay), Sayuri is a [[StepfordSmiler seemingly cheerful]] girl with an odd habit of [[ThirdPersonPerson referring to herself in the third person]]. Her family is rather wealthy, and she is a good cook. She and Mai have seemingly diametrically opposed personalities, which causes Yūichi to remark that "they sure do make an odd couple of girls". She is also referred to as being almost like Mai's older sister.

* BigSisterInstinct: Sayuri looks after Mai like a kindly older sister would. Makes sense since Sayuri regrets not being kinder towards her actual younger brother before he died.

* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Part of her StepfordSmiler act. She's weird in a cheerful way, and she comes across as kinda clueless a lot of the time.

* BetaCouple: With Kitagawa in the Toei version.

* BetaCouple: With Kaori in the Toei version.

* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: In the Toei Version.

* AllLovingHero: A little more cynical version, but when you get past his snarky attitude, he’s a very loving person.

* TheSnarkKnight: He’s the male hero, but he’s pretty damn snarky.

* AllLovingHeroine: She’s kind and loving towards everyone and tries to help them as much as possible.

* CuteClumsyGirl: Her first scene involves crashing into Yuichi and it’s a bit of a RunningGag.

* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Taiyaki, of course. So much so that she accidentally steals it twice. It ''does'' look delicious.

* LongHairIsFeminine: Has long hair and is very much feminine.

* ActionGirl: Par excellance. She's excellent with a sword.

* AloofDarkHairedGirl: The tallest of the girls in series, rather cold, aloof and mysterious, and she has dark blue hair. She fits.
* AmbiguouslyBi: She definitely has feelings for Yūichi, but she seems to also have feelings for Sayuri.

* CoolSword: And she's very skilled with it.

* KindlyVet: What she (and apparently Sayuri as well) aspires to be. Yūichi is disbelieving, so she whacks him with the veterinary book she's reading.

* TheQuietOne: Doesn’t speak unless she has to.

* TheStoic: Given her calm, uncommunicative, at first.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Extremely calm and stoic, coming across as emotionless. Deep down, though, she's a very nice girl who cares very much for those close to her and wants to be a KindlyVet.
* SwissArmyTears:Played for heavy drama. [[spoiler:Her tears have healing powers, but when she used them to save her mother's life when she was little, after making her briefly famous and revered, she was persecuted and driven out of town for it, causing her and her mother to move to the town where the series is set. The repression of her powers created the demons, and it's only by embracing her powers that she is saved and the demons disappear.]]

* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Beef bowls.

* TookALevelInKindness: Before the series, she was an AloofBigSister. After her brother’s death, she warmed up gradually.
* VerbalTic: Whenever she laughs, she clearly voices "Ahaha!". She also exclaims "Hoe!" when surprised.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She’s aloof and stubborn, but she’s a good person underneath it all.

* IdiotHair: Has one and isn’t exactly the smartest cookie.

The JerkAss Student Council President, who is apparently intent on expelling Mai (and possibly Sayuri as well, if she continues to associate herself with Mai) from the school.

* HateSink: Kuze’s every bit petty as he is an asshole.
* JerkAss: Trying to get Mai expelled after the ball is pretty extreme, considering [[spoiler:the demons did the damage, not her- she didn't start waving her sword around until AFTER the windows all broke and tables started flying. Yet he still tries to get her blamed for that, too.]]
