* KnightOfCerebus: Buck's appearance in the game is the catalyst that turns Jason into a ruthless killer. Unlike the the pirates and the privateers, Buck is a shameless psychopath who uses Keith to press-gang Jason into working for him. [[spoiler: He sends Jason on multiple suicide missions for the dagger and you can see Jason grow more and more impatient with Buck. When Jason finally reunites with Keith, he realises Buck was using him as a sex slave and learns that Buck had no intention of cooperating with Jason. This realisation makes Jason attack Buck and he successfully kills him after a brief struggle. This time, Jason was confronting an immovable object and couldn't fight back without putting Keith in more danger. After killing Buck, Jason's hands are shaking and he becomes emotionally distant towards his friends. Killing Buck was the event that made Jason honest about what he does, he now wants to kill Vaas and Hoyt in revenge for murdering Riley and Grant.]]

* AxCrazy: An absolutely frightening MoodSwinger who is very open to the idea of senseless violence, and constantly [[ColdBloodedTorturer tortures]] and murders [[ForTheEvulz for fun]].

* AdvertisedExtra: Despite all the publicity he got in the trailers, being on the cover of the game, and being the villain Jason has the most personal enmity with, [[spoiler:ultimately, Vaas is only TheDragon to Hoyt, the BigBad, and once Jason kills him, the remaining half of the game is dedicated to defeating Hoyt.]]
* AlasPoorVillain: While Vaas needed to be killed, Citra mourns him since he was still her brother and only became the way he is because of [[TheCorrupter Hoyt Volker]]. Jason then realizes that Hoyt is the true monster and promises to kill him for he did to Vaas.

* AxCrazy: An absolutely frightening MoodSwinger. He'd give ComicBook/TheJoker a run for his money in the psychotic department.

* DeathSeeker: More daring people to do it than actually wishing for it, though. [[spoiler:Zig-Zagged during the final confrontation with him in the hallucination. At first, he taunts Jason about how Citra has him around her finger before grabbing the gun and shouting at him to hurry up and shoot him, which Jason does but reveals it's another hallucination. Then Jason has to fight/dash through a bunch of Vaas hallucinations to reach him again that ''can'' hurt and kill him, yet by that point Vaas is just shouting a bunch of mocking religious spiel for Jason to finish him off so he'll be "reborn." The final part of the "fight" doesn't even have Vaas trying to fight back against Jason, merely dodging and blocking the knife until he's finally stabbed through with it in a cutscene.]]

* DiesWideOpen: [[spoiler:After Jason stabs him. And then his dead eyes ''stare right up at you.'']]
* DiscOneFinalBoss: [[spoiler: Dies about two-thirds of the way through the game, despite being the most consistent antagonist until that point.]]

* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Choleric. He is incredibly aggressive, violent, domineering, and controlling.

* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler: Jason kills him by brutally ramming a knife into his chest.]]

* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler:''VideoGame/FarCry6'' confirmed this. He never died.]]

* BaldOfEvil: What he's pretending to be instead of BaldOfAwesome.

* AxCrazy: As soon as he begins to opt for violence and the habit of killing, Jason becomes increasingly bloodthirsty, cruel, brutal and sadistic, to such an extent that he enjoys [[{{Pyromaniac}} pyromania]] and the habit of burning things, as evidenced in a mission.

* {{Bishounen}}: He is a very handsome man, and therefore numerous characters show clear attraction to him. When he first meets Buck, he takes a moment to eye up Jason before speaking, and clearly wants to take him in along with [[spoiler:Keith]] as a sex slave. Similarly, Citra ends up falling in love with him as he starts to prove himself. Also, when walking around the Privateers Compound, Jason will get random quips from soldiers.

* VillainProtagonist: [[spoiler:In the Join Citra ending.]]

* TheBerserker: [[spoiler: Progressively. This reaches its culmination in the "Kill Liza" ending.]]

* MaskOfSanity: Buck is even better at hiding the psychopath he truly is than Hoyt. Most of the time, he's [[FauxAffablyEvil superficially cheerful and sarcastic]], if mildly rude. The only time we see this mask slip is when Buck loses his temper with Jason and snaps at him for perceived incompetence, making it clear IWillPunishYouFriendForYourFailure. Even when he's [[spoiler:challenging Jason to a knife fight with rape as his punishment for losing]], Buck treats it like one big game.

* PinkIsErotic: He is the first main villain Jason must face and he's shown to be a perverted psychopath with a lust for violence. [[spoiler: Buck also bought Jason's friend, Keith, and has been raping him repeatedly. When Buck tries to kill or capture Jason to be his next sex slave, the arena is decorated with pink lightbulbs. As part of his design, Buck has a tattoo of a deer with 2 pink roses in the center of his chest.]]

* ScarsAreForever: Vaas has a scar of unknown origin along his left temple. His DLC in ''VideoGame/FarCry6'' reveals that Vaas at one point tried to [[BungledSuicide shot himself because of Citra only for the bullet to graze the side of his head instead]].

* EverythingsBetterWithMonkeys: His reason for using monkeys as suicide bombers.

* BadassBeard: He's got a goatee, suiting his rugged nature. It also helps him blend in with Hoyt's Privateers, who [[BeardOfEvil almost all have beards]].

* BadassBeard: A nice black beard.

* BadassBeard: Well, he'd like to be badass, anyway.

* CainAndAbel: With Citra, to the point that when Vaas realizes that Jason has been inked due to Citra's influence, he goes on a furious rant about her and decides he's going to burn Jason to death rather than just shoot him. [[spoiler:While it initially looks like he's the Cain to her Abel, events both implied and shown indicate it actually goes both ways.]]

* EvenEvilHasStandards: PlayedForLaughs- [[BlackComedy very, very dark laughs]]- when he tells off Christopher Mintz-Plasse for not flossing his teeth. [[TheToothHurts After he's pulled one of them out.]]

* BreakoutCharacter: Vaas was so popular with the creators, they released a live-action miniseries starring him.

* BigBad: [[spoiler:Technically shares the spot with Hoyt in a BigBadEnsemble. While Citra is never openly antagonistic to Jason, she feeds his power trip and is partially the reason he sinks into SanitySlippage in fighting the pirates and privateers. Plus, the final choice of the game that determines whether it's a DownerEnding or a BittersweetEnding is entirely by her doing.]]

* ShoutOut: Buck is largely based on Buck from the movie Film/KillBill. Both men have similar personalities and hairstyles. When hearing about Buck for the first time, Jason quotes a line from the movie before cutting himself off.

* {{Yandere}}: [[spoiler:She is ''very'' possessive of Jason. In the 'Save Friends' ending, she goes ballistic once Jason starts cutting his friends loose. In spite all of that, however, [[TakingTheBullet she throws herself upon Dennis's knife]] [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere if Jason rejects her]], even though she, of all people, logically would've taken his decision the worst. Whatever else one can say, Citra cares about Jason. In her own way.]]

* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: He really was a ordinary guy but the pressure given by Citra and Hoyt's drugs has destroyed his sanity, turning him into [[AxCrazy homicidal maniac.]]

* TheMentor: Serves the purpose of mentoring Jason through the tutorial.

* BenevolentBoss: Quite surprisingly, Vaas appears to be one of these, which is not something you would normally expect from a man as insane and homicidal as he is. Several times (in both promotional material and in-game) Vaas is shown to be on good terms with his pirates, and even jokes around with them. And while he does occasionally get angry at them, it never goes beyond yelling at them.

* BenevolentBoss: Surprisingly, Vaas appears to be one of these, which is not normally something you would expect from an insane and homicidal pirate such as he. Several times (in both promotional material and in-game) Vaas is shown to be on good terms with his men, and even jokes around with them. And while he does occasionally get angry at them, it never goes beyond yelling at them.

* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler:After Jason begins to have second thoughts of staying on the island with her, Citra begins to [[Gaslighting manipulate his feelings]] by drugging him to into thinking that his friends do not care of him and during said hallucination, he nearly kills them.]].
