* FlatCharacter: PlayedForDrama. He's just a {{Jerkass}} with TheSocialDarwinist and he shows to have nothing else, even his past raising Minerva shows him being the same he was as a guild master. While the rest of the guild (including, eventually, Minerva) grow out of their former policies, Ziemma stubbornly sticks to these ideals. He is ultimately taken down by Sting and Rogue to show that the guild wants to be done with him, a symbol of the old, unfeeling Saber Tooth that refuses to change. Even his powers are generic, with him simply being physically strong and having non-descript purple blasts as his magic.

* MakeAnExampleOfThem: As part of his disciplinary methods, Ziemma singles out the members of the guild who have [[YouHaveFailedMe failed him]] and publicly humiliates them before having them [[InsigniaRipoffRitual erase their guild marks]] and expelling them, so all can witness what happens to those who disappoint him.

* CombatPragmatist: She's clever and ruthless and doesn't hesitate to do anything that will give her an advantage in battle. During the naval battle, she uses her teleportation magit to steals Lucy's Gatekeys to render her helpless. As the tactical mind of her group in the final match of the tournament, she tells her teammates to avoid the strongest members of the opposing teams so they can be taken on [[KickThemWhileTheyAreDown once weakened from their fights]]. This plan only falls through because Fairy Tail, even when beaten and broken, are literally just too badass to stay down for long.

* EasilyForgiven: Even after her despicable actions at the end of the Grand Magic Games, Erza doesn't hold a grudge against her and tries talking her into returning to Saber Tooth during their next encounters. Saber Tooth itself holds no grudge against her either, with Sting and Rogue personally coming to her rescue during the Tartaros arc, and everyone welcoming her back. After Tartaros's demise, Lucy forgives Minerva for her NoHoldsBarredBeatdown in naval battle.

* TheStarscream: PlayedWith. While she plays herself as a loyal TheDragon towards her father, she does not hesitate to shove her father's TheSocialDarwinist beliefs on his face after Sting takes him down in a fit of rage, and she's the one who pushes Sting to take over as the guild master for "defeating" her father, but making sure Sting is on her leash by keeping Lector her hostage.
* TheStrategist: She's the one who makes the battle plans for Saber Tooth, including the plan for the final battle at the Grand Magic Games where she instructs her team to avoid the tougher fights (like Erza, Kagura, and Jura) and concentrate on the easy prey. Even after she herself got defeated, her plan still almost works, as Sting was completely unarmed facing a worn-down Fairy Tail team, but Sting decides to surrender rather than defeat his idols in such a dishonest manner.

* BullyingADragon: She thinks Erza's nothing but cornered prey just because her foot is shattered, but this ends up being a bad idea.

While Lucy ran away and made a new life and friends for herself, Minerva stayed and became even worse than her father.

* FreudianExcuse: Her father treated her as badly as any "weak" member of the guild, and harshly trained her into becoming a {{tykebomb}} just because she wouldn't stop crying as a child, a sign of weakness in his eyes. She finally turns the tables on him when Sting blasts a hole in his chest, giving her the excuse to force him out of the guild, but by then, she already TookALevelInJerkass that one can hardly celebrate.

** Another one when she returns to Succubus Eye's headquarters to find the place trashed, the other guild members reduced to paper dolls, and Tartaros' Kyôka calling Succubus Eye too "weak" to work for them. When Kyôka says she's about to find out if the same is true for Minerva, her eyes go wide with fear.

* RedRightHand: After temporarily transforming into a demon soldier for Tartaros, she sports an eyepatch over her right eye and has two devil horns on her head. Polryusica eventually reverses those changes after Tartaros' demise.

* KarmicButtMonkey: As payback for her vile actions against Lucy, Milliana, and Kagura she's played as something of a pushover at the [[Recap/FairyTailSunVillageArc Sun Village arc]] when Erza accidentally [[ClothingDamage rips off her skirt]] during their rematch, and again when she falls victim to her guildmate's [[FountainOfYouth de-aging spell]] due to PowerIncontinence.

* KickTheDog: Her actions during the Naval Battle in the Grand Magic Games are meant to show the audience how cruel and ruthless she is. She could have easily won the match by teleporting Lucy out of the ring, even ensuring Lucy have last place by doing it early, but made a point not to do so just so she could beat Lucy. She even uses her magic to ''keep'' Lucy in the ring for longer. The beatdown is so vicious and pointless that the referees had to intervene by declaring the match over just to stop Minerva.

* KickTheDog: She shoots right through her own spirit Aries with Caelum to get a cheap shot at Loke in the [[Recap/FairyTailOracionSeisArc Nirvana arc]]. She justifies herself by saying [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman spirits can't die from such an attack]], but Lucy has none of it.

* RedRightHand: After temporarily transforming into a demon soldier for Tartaros, she sports an eyepatch over her right eye and has two devil horns on her head. Porlyusica eventually reverses those changes after Tartaros' demise.

** For all her talk of MightMakesRight, she is appalled when she realizes that Kyôka murdered everyone in Succubus Eye for not being strong, enough instead of just recruiting them.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: As a member of Succubus Eye, she ditches the UsefulNotes/{{Qipao}} for a {{stripperific}} black robe, complete with exposed midsections and PrettyInMink. Although it might as well be ''eviler'' just because she was hardly a good guy by ''any means''. After her HeelFaceTurn, she takes up new outfit, distinct from the qiapo to mark her GoodCostumeSwitch.

* UnexplainedRecovery: Tartaros turns her into a demon, but she's inexplicably returns to normal upon her return to Saber Tooth, and it's never mentioned in the story how. Volume Q&A explains that Porlyusica treated her, but couldn't fully revert her back to human, although Minerva never shows to have any demon traits.

* BreakTheHaughty: The entire [[Recap/FairyTailGrandMagicGamesArc Grand Magic Games arc]] is this for them. Though on the first day they proceed to dominate all the events they participate in, on the second day they get no points, with Sting getting stuck on a vehicle-themed challenge, and Yukino being soundly defeated by Kagura. Then, on the third day, though Rufus manages to defeat Eve without issue, Orga gets thoroughly shown up by both Erza and Cana. Then, come the fourth day, despite Minerva carrying the initial challenge for Sabertooth, both Sting and Rogue are quickly overpowered by Natsu and Gajeel (and later just Natsu). Fortunately, after losing in the final challenge, they take these losses to heart, and decide to better themselves.

* AbusiveParents: He raised and trained his daughter Minerva. And by "raised and trained", we mean "tormented her and conditioned the poor girl to become a {{tykebomb}}".

* DisproportionateRetribution: An ironclad rule of his is not to dishonor the guild, which essentially amounts to "win all your battles". Lose even one battle, however, and he'll have you humiliated in front of the other members and expel you from the guild, as Yukino found out the hard way. * LackOfEmpathy: A complete megalomaniac who doesn't show any remorse in expelling his guild members just he can maintain Saber Tooth's reputation. Nor does he show any emotion in trying to off Lector and taunt Sting about it.

* MakeAnExampleOfThem: His method of "disciplining" his guild involves organizing a mock trial where he singles out the members of the guild that [[YouHaveFailedMe failed him]] and publicly humiliates them before [[InsigniaRipoffRitual removing their guild marks]] and expelling them, so all can witness what happens to those who disappoint him.

* MoralityPet: During the Grand Magic Game, his friendship to Lecter is his biggest redeeming factor. Seeing Ziemma almost execute Lecter is what finally triggers him to turn against his abusive guild master and his methods.

* BrokenPedestal: Ziemma becomes one to them after the end of the Grand Magic Games. They help him uphold his MightMakesRight beliefs to the point where they ridicule Fairy Tail, even extending it to Dragon Slayers lower than them. However, once Sting and Rogue realize the abusive relationship between Sabertooth and its master after Natsu defeats them, they eventually decide to turn on Ziemma and help rebuild Saber Tooth for good.

* AnimeChineseGirl: PlayedWith. She has the design of Chinese ActionGirl, down to the UsefulNotes/[{Qipao}}, OdangoHair, and hand-to-hand fighting skills, but is more of a DragonLady due to her cruel personality and sexualized appearance. But after her HeelFaceTurn, she does begin to be drawn as more cute than sexy and gains many silly traits like being a BigEater.

* BrainwashedAndCrazy: After she gets captured and ReforgedIntoAMinion of Tartaros, her mental health takes a dive, with the only thing on her mind being to kill Erza and Fairy Tail. She manages to snap out of it with the help of Minerva, Sting, and Rogue.
* BrokenAce: She's the most powerful and talented mage in Sabertooth, but her TrainingFromHell as a child left her emotionally scarred, and she has a great deal of self-loathing and emotional issues.
* BrokenBird: Her father repeatedly puts her through TrainingFromHell as a young child, transforming her into a merciless fighter who realizes that [[DeathSeeker she actually doesn't deserve to live for the things she's done]]. Thanks to Saber Tooth's reform, she manages to recover nicely.

* CameBackStrong: {{Subverted|Trope}}. After Minerva withstands Kyôka's reinforcement curse, Kyôka takes enough of a liking to her to recruit her into her guild as a demon. Though this would normally mean Minerva is more powerful than ever, Erza still manages to beat her easily.

* ChildrenForcedToKill: The anime adaptation shows how bad her childhood was, where she's forced by her father to murder another guild member, Fingers, after beating him, although he's the one who does the deed when she cannot. She cries the entire time.
* ClimaxBoss: She's the last opponent Fairy Tail faces in actual physical combat on the final day of the Grand Magic Games, fitting as she's TheAce of Sabertooth.

* TookALevelInCheerfulness: Fairy Tail's quirky cheeriness definitely rubs off on Saber Tooth after teaching them a thing or two about ThePowerOfFriendship. Following the Grand Magic Games, they're even shown to have built a swimming pool just like Fairy Tail does.

* LaserGuidedKarma: After Sting incapacitates him for seemingly killing Lector, Minerva--his own daughter--shoves his SocialDarwinist doctrine back in his face and tells him there's no longer a place for him in the guild. Then, when he becomes a demon after joining Tartaros, he's ultimately defeated by Sting and Rogue, the same wizards whom Ziemma frequently abused.

* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: He goes through a brief HeroicBSOD in the Alvarez Empire arc after [[CurbStompBattle his entire guild gets trounced by]] [[OneManArmy Bloodman]]. It takes Yukino [[ShrinkingViolet of all people]] to slap some sense into him.

* GuileHero: In the Tartaros arc, Sting works around Natsu's adamant refusal of the Twin Dragons' help fighting Mard Geer by challenging Natsu to see who can beat him first.

** In the Alvarez Empire arc, he falls into one after Bloodman wipes the floor with his entire guild.

* KnowNothingKnowItAll: His default position with the first generation Dragon Slayers comes off as this, boasting to Natsu that he and Rogue could have beaten Acnologia despite having never seen the monster in action before. In truth, he's just being a blowhard; not only does he have no real experience fighting any dragon in battle, but the ones he faces up against are nowhere near Acnologia's level, and he can't even scratch them.

* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Even after finding out Lector is alive, he becomes much more subdued and calculating than usual on the last day of the Grand Magic Games, taking out several enemy guild members (most notably Bacchus) with stony expression and surprise attacks rather than his usual BloodKnight attitude and direct combat before hiding away from the cameras for the rest of the time. It's only by the end when it's all coming together that he lets some of his old cockiness back out.

* RedemptionPromotion: After his humbling at Natsu's hands, it takes him a good while before this kicks in, aside from some battles against Ziemma . He struggled against the Eclipse Dragons, got toyed with by Mard Geer, and was throttled along with his guild by Bloodman and his Alvarez invasion force.
