* DetachmentCombat: Funny Face's normal attack is to disassemble his outer shell, having each part float out to attack the player before reassembling. As his parts fly off, you get a split second view of the shriveled husk of the person Funny Face used to be.
* KickTheDog: Sunny Day and Funny Face are such funny comic relief! Look at them avoiding chores around the mothership, being treated like flunkies, and directly attacking defenseless civilian population centers. The hero team comes across them for the first time in Italy, attacking a town of no particular strategic value. Turns out Sunny and Funny merely prefer civilian targets because they're easier to kill, and get upset when the heroes show up since they expected no "army" resistance.
* MinionWithAnFInEvil: Sure they can fight if you put them in a room with your enemies, but they can't even keep the super important shut-off mechanism a secret without telling you how secret it's supposed to be first.
* ShooOutTheClowns: Once they're out of the picture for good, you know you're firmly in the final sequences.
* VileVillainLaughableLackey: One of them is going to be scrubbing the entire mothership after this latest blunder.

* EliteMook: They start showing up halfway through the game and are one of the deadliest units in the Dark Force Army. They are big, durable, and their Mega Plasma Cannon fires a wide, devestating blast that can attack from off-screen. * TheAssimilator: The parasitic bem spreads by infecting humans and assimilating them into another bem. By the time the game begins, several towns in Europe have already been lost.
* DarwinistDesire: This in general is the desire of the bem. Apart from the general survival and propagation of their species by assimilating humans, they seek out superior genetics where they can to produce superior offspring. Francisca identifies Gradius as having superior enough genetics that the two of them should become mates, but his assimilation of a young boy Hans gave Gradius his romantic feelings for the girl who used to be Martina, putting conflict between him and Francisca. The bem eventually capture another human with superior cells, assimilate him with exceptional bem, and produce Gael Bolg, the apex of their species.
* DyingRace: Ultimately their motivation is to maintain their existence as a species and settle in a new home, the assimilation of humanity being an unfortunate side effect. They do not take the human pushback well.
* EvilIsVisceral: Bem and the places they infest are covered in red, gutsy-like musculature, and drip with blood-like fluid.
