[[spoiler: Killed in chapter 5 by Oswald himself after attacking the animatronic and going against the rules.]]

* TheFriendNobodyLikes: We keep Michael around for 3 reasons. Pity (6), Caring (9), and Supervision (8). Folks pity that he has no friends and no real childhood to speak of, he actually has a friend or two because he is a good boy, and you [[{{TheKlutz}} can’t trust him alone]]. You can’t trust him with people, either. You just can’t trust him.
* WalkingSpoiler: Not Michael per say, but most of his actions… He’s an instigator, and when tricky stuff happens… he’s at least partially involved…
* PrimaryColorChampion: Have you seen this boy? He’s wonderful!!!
* ProperlyParanoid: Michael’s been in a hostage situation before, and when the vacation starts up, is first to think something’s wrong. From the lack of wi-fi to the lack of staff, he’s worried. He brings it up and is brushed off. Then the killing game starts. [[spoiler: There’s also the fact he has at least 3000 more files in his Aura Reader (which at most can catalogue individuals for 30 days at a time in one file) than he remembered.]]
* AwfulTruth: [[spoiler: “Like. I. Said. This is entertainment.” Michael’s the first to raise the possibility that everything’s being broadcast to the outside world, albeit, [[{{ObfuscatingStupidity}} in his normal way of doing things]]. (Thanks for that Michael, being vague to spare the feelings of everyone else was a great idea, genius.) He’s the first to theorize that maybe everyone’s missing some memories (thanks to the Aura Reader) and one of the first to break the prologue calm by suggesting that someone will inevitably crack and commit murder.]]
* HonorBeforeReason: Michael’s nothing if not doggedly stupid. And loyal. But mostly stupid. He follows his own personal ethics without fail, most of which where imparted to him by his collective parents. The most notable consequence of these ethics involve him viewing other people--regardless of how he feels about them--and animals--especially his clients--as more important than him. That his own life is not as important as the lives of others, especially if his own sacrifice is necessary. …His parents didn’t teach him that, by the way.
* GivingTheSwordToANoob: Michael has an accurate to the second heart rate and MRI brainwave scanner! It doubles as a one use bomb and has a 50-foot range. It can track simple bodily statuses, from asleep to stable to panicked to dead. It could be used as an accurate lie detector… [[{{MistakenForBadass}} Something really important for class trials!]] It could even give him an edge! But he never learned how to use it that way, [[spoiler: and later [[{{HonorBeforeReason}} exploded it because he didn’t want to be above his Ultimate peers.]]]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity: “Buzz Lightyear is handsome and I want to hold his hand.” He’s not good at logic, but he is good at playing up his naiveté. Often covering up his suspicious activity as doing his own thing in a well-meaning manner, he’s actually trying to lead everyone along. [[spoiler: (Which is confusing for when he really is trying to do something good, like [[{{ArsonMurderAndJaywalking}} when he stole Tsukiya’s shoes, or tackled Billy that one time, or tried to rewrite the school rules cover to cover in 6 different copies]]. Those were all him not thinking, folks.)]] See ‘Guile Hero’ entry. To catch him off-guard is easy to do (just touch him unexpectedly or say something loud, that’ll make him uncomfortable and vulnerable), and since he actually is bad with social situations, it’s not like most could tell when he’s being facetious. (If someone is trying to spend time with him or be his friend, that’s the real Michael, baby.) Chances are, if something’s too convenient and it looks like Michael might have done something, he’s already aware of that fact and looking to spin it in his favor. Couple this with growing up in [[{{WrongSideOfTheTracks}} Orre County]], a place known for only having 2 police officers and no legitimate schools, and you’ve got yourself one tricky chaotic neutral character.
* HalfTruth: Almost everything Michael says about his injuries or the more supernatural parts of his past fall under this category. If he has a plan, he’s sure to employ this strategy as well. And if he’s showing his hand willingly, you can be sure he’s not telling the whole truth. The only thing he never lies about is how much he loves his family, how he feels about animals (loves them!), when he’s trying to comfort someone, and things he perceives as dangerous. In fact, unless you catch him off-guard, he’s likely to steel his emotions and react cautiously.
* ContrivedCoincidence:
** Backstory: Michael showed up to Phenac City, like in the game. Got kidnapped and sent to Justy’s PRE-GYM underground Pokemon terrarium to meet up with all the real townspeople, same as in the game. Upon his arrival, Just got shot in the leg for requesting back-up (Michael was a [[{{KidHero}} serious threat to both Cipher and Snagem]] at the time) and those in charge decided to stop giving the hostages food as punishment. It took just shy of 5 weeks for help to arrive (although Michael will only say 3). Six people died. The people of Phenac never forgave him, except Justy because he’s a good guy.
** Pre-DV 2: [[spoiler: Michael was the last to fight local worst guy ever, Tsukiya. The cops took him in for questioning on grounds of suspicious behavior and murder accusations.]]
** Chapter 1: [[spoiler: His motive (forever locked in rooms) framed the first crime scene in a way that maybe Michael did it.]]
** Chapter 2: [[spoiler: A quintessential part of the investigation and later the trial involved hacking skills… Michael is talented enough to get past Hope’s Peak Academy’s encrypted servers to copy, download, and wire all the student relevant files.]]
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: To a slightly extreme measure. Michael views almost everything as just or unjust, heroic or villainous, etc. While he doesn't often speak about things in this manner, it's always present in his mind. To do bad things, like spread rumors or taunt bullies, that lead to good things, like getting someone put in prison or redirecting aggression to oneself, is perfectly fine. To sacrifice anyone that is not oneself is wrong and bad, and only ever justifiable if it protects a larger group, like the whole world. Friendships, relationships in general, are a bank account that one must keep balanced. It is not okay to offer nothing in turn for spending time with someone.
** Things that are okay: Ding dong ditching after leaving an unnamed and unmarked care package at someone’s door; Continually pestering the front office and the headmaster of a school even after several verbal and written warnings because a small child said it was okay; Bombs and guns in plain sight, without safety on, in the general vicinity of a child under 10; Rooming said child in the storeroom for said equipment; Sending a 13 year-old to take down the mafia; Being shot at; Being burned; Being shocked; Being bitten by several big cats and dogs and other various strong animals, also a real Dragonite; [[spoiler: blowing up at least 26 people under the pretenses that either at least one would make it out, or that at the very least the big bad would cease to exist; Thanking someone for dismantling some killer animatronic dolls;]]
** Things that are not okay: Misgendering someone, ever; Showing up to a crime scene without disposable gloves and juice; Showing up to a trial without gauze and juice; Being friends with someone without being able to offer gifts and meaningful conversation for putting up with you; Being selfish by taking care of your own mental, physical, and other basic needs without first offering help regardless of your actual feelings; Prioritizing yourself over the needs of those suffering
* ShuttingUpNow: The preDV 2 shenanigans sometimes causes him to outright mute the chat or not check it for days because they all seem to have little regard for rules and he doesn’t want to bother them… too much. [[spoiler: Caelum tells him to shut up in Trial 1 because he was being unhelpful, so he did.]] [[spoiler: In Trial 2, he only answered when someone talked to him directly.]]
* GuileHero: The young, actually not-so-evil variety. Along with the use of tasers, this is the only way Michael managed to survive infiltrating Cipher and Snagem. [[spoiler: Later, during the prologue, he purposefully brings up the topics of murder and distrust to foster hope and resilience. [[{{TheAtoner}} It didn’t quite work, instead making everyone wary of him.]] He spends the social part of Chapter 1 strengthening his Aura Reader bomb to blow up Oswald in the trial room (with everyone else in it)! [[{{DidntThinkThisThrough}} He shows his hand]], half-expecting praise but mostly [[{{BlueAndOrangeMorality}} realizing how stupid he was to think they’d understand]]. He does this to lure out the real killer, and it kind of works, in a roundabout manner? After Chapter 1, he blows up the Oswald statue to instill a sense of hope in his classmates, and that seems to take hold. During the trial for Chapter 2, he starts playing with his park pass (the vital piece of evidence for determining the killer) to grab everyone’s attention from their talk of murder weapons onto something more concrete. During Chapter 3, even though the injury itself was accidental, he brought up the presence of an injury while some personal stuff was going down to direct the attention away from those involved - Caelum, Saturday, and Hiroki to an extent - to let Caelum have some time to himself.]] He means well, but boy, is Michael… something.
* CanonWelding: Sentient cartoons--toons--are a very real and present thing, with most of them [[VideoGame/{{Pokemon}} living normal lives]] and 9 to 5 jobs ([[VideoGame/BendyAndTheInkMachine sometimes through acting]]). And so are Pokemon, which could make Michael’s whole canon play out exactly like how it did in [[VideoGame/PokemonXDGaleOfDarkness his actual game]]. But that’d be too nice. So instead Michael’s adventures involve bad guys. With guns. Bad guns.
* FeigningIntelligence: When it comes to anything socially-related, Michael will pretend he knows what’s best and act accordingly. If you call him out, he’ll respond with confusion or shock, depending on how he’s addressed. He lived in a lab for 8 years of his life, and a weapon storage room 10 before that.
* MartyrWithoutACause: [[spoiler: Yes Michael, because blowing up a robot that probably has spares just to save yourself and your classmates a few months of suffering is a great idea. [[WhatTheHellHero It is also this]].]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: [[spoiler: Michael made a perfectly functional bomb that could actually destroy Oswald and maybe let everyone buy time to escape, but then someone asks what he’s hiding and he spills everything. Later he uses it to blow up and Oswald statue, but that doesn’t so much as garner a proper reaction from Oswald… Oswald threw a popcorn kernel at him.]]
* NeverBeAHero: He’ll never be a hero in-canon. [[spoiler: The only time he really did something heroic was the 5 month stint between DV 1 and DV 2 when he traveled cross-country across the Monokuma/Oswald controlled world and helped out survivors along the way. He even helped some people who immediately turned on him, leading to a broken arm and permanent brand over his heart. Hot metal hurts folks.]]
* NominalHero: Relationship and Reward variety, but Reward only during preDV 2. Michael, during preDV 2 especially, did many illegal things under the pretense of helping classmates or fulfilling his promise to Gonzap. He would do anything for his classmates, but above that, anything for his sister Jovi. In DV 2 he trusts none of his classmates fully, but would not leave or kill any of them, unless forced to. He only acts and behaves within the confines of “good” moral traits because Jovi would want him to be kind and good. He feels just as hopeless as anyone else, but because he loves his sister, he’ll give his all.
* ParentsAsPeople: Lily, Krane and Naps, and Rui and Wes all qualify. Even Gonzap, to a lesser degree. They try their best to be good role models for Michael, to support and be there for him, but they’ve all also got their own lives. Lily and Krane pretty much run the HQ Coordination Lab, Krane’s got serious identity and sister issues to deal with, Wes and Rui are on the run (when they’re not building up a wonderful little cave city called the Under), and Gonzap is Gonzap.
* FamilyOfChoice: Gonzap may be a conniving jerk that Michael has no reason to trust, but he’s also never done anything to intentionally hurt Michael either. He’s also blackmailing Michael… for good reasons (Gonzap thinks Michael will behave better in school if he’s motivated)! But above that, he’s family… kind of.
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: Gonzap promises to get Jovi in contact with his parents if he goes to HPA and behaves like a model student. Michael wants his sister happy and she only wants a full family (missing parents and all), so what else can Michael do but take Gonzap for his word? [[{{ThatWasntARequest}} He couldn’t actually refuse, either.]]
* FollowInMyFootsteps: Michael took down Snagem and Cipher, just like his Mom and Dad! He also used a bomb that scared his classmates in Hope's Peak Academy while being blackmailed by Gonzap, just like Wes!
* ItRunsInTheFamily: Liking Pokemon, saving Orre, and being a disaster pansexual are all things he got from his parents, Wes and Rui! He's stupid, impulsive, and constantly evaluating his surroundings in constant paranoia just like his dad! He also has orange hair, blue eyes, and a bit of a hero complex, just like his mom!
* WorldOfNoGrandparents: Subverted by the fact his Great Grandparents are in the picture instead. Unlike Wes and Rui, who left Michael's life at 10 to go into hiding and build a safe haven in a cave (a safecaven, if you will), Michael's great grandparents Belluh and Eagun have always been there. He calls them his grandparents because Rui never got along with her folks in the first place, and Wes didn't know his parents. They were too old to properly take care of Jovi and Michael when their folks split, but they did send Jovi and Michael off to the HQ Coordination Lab with Krane and Lily. Eagun is known for raising the hit Pokemon Anime's own Pikachu, taking care of him perhaps a little more than his children at the time, who grew up to have an aversion to all sorts of supernatural phenomenon, even going as far as moving away from Orre and changing their names to hide their past heritage.

* SickeninglySweethearts: Caelum and Rocky are just like this.

* SleepCute: During Chapter One, Caelum fell asleep on Rocky multiple times. This was largely due to the motive, [[spoiler: as his curse made him unable to stay awake for long periods of time,]] but Caelum also just felt safe around Rocky, [[spoiler: despite the class not knowing that the two were already a couple.]]
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Caelum is usually distant even when friendly and very sktitish about getting too close to people. But around Rocky, he can't help but melt (until they're [[SickeninglySweet Sickeningly Sweet]]).

* UptightLovesWild: Subverted when Caelum is actually not as uptight as he first appears.

\n* [[spoiler: YouAreWorthHell: Caelum had a choice to make when he realized what Rocky was doing with Peacock. And he knew that he didn't have the same passion for destruction that his boyfriend apparently did; on the contrary, that he might harm someone unknowingly was one of his greatest fears. But he chose to join Rocky in Hell rather than be parted from him, and he would make that choice again.]]

* OppositesAttract: Caelum is quiet, Rocky is as loud as it gets. Rocky takes care in his appearance, Caelum only cares as far as he feels like he has to. Caelum is terrified of crowds, and Rocky performs in front of them regularly. Rocky is the moron, and Caelum is the morosexual. And they're as in love as it gets.

* [[spoiler: OutlawCouple: As Ultimate Despairs, Rocky and Caelum incite riots, cause people to go berserk, and in those and various other ways cause the deaths of countless people.]]
* ParalyzingFearOfSexuality: Implied. Caelum has no difficulty talking about sexual topics in a clinical sense, but when he has to consider the topic on a more personal level he becomes overwhelmingly flustered.

* RelationshipReveal: Caelum and Rocky almost forget to tell the rest of the class when they begin dating, as Rocky is sick at the time and Caelum is focused on taking care of him.
* RoaringRampageOfRomance: [[spoiler: Rocky and Caelum are key factors in the destruction of society as Ultimate Despairs. Being together and working together towards this goal exponentially multiplies the amount of destruction they each do, leading to this trope.]]
