* BreakTheHaughty: In her first focus chapter/episode, she losses her nerve and it almost leads to her familiars turning against her.
** It goes straight into BreakTheCutie territory during the Inari arc.

* {{Familiar}}s: Has a pair of very powerful foxes who almost killed her when they saw [[BreakTheHaughty she wasn't as strong as she seemed]]. They are later "killed" by Shima when she tries to escape the Illuminati compound and then come back when she begs them for strength after her mother dies. However, turns out Shima just ''weakened'' them enough to make it so they were out of the way for a time...

* FriendlessBackground: Happened due to being the only one who could see demons. Possibly also due to her fear of one day having to give herself up to the Illuminati.

* HimeCut: She has long hair in tails and bangs that are as straight and even as a ruler. She also claims to have a relation to a {{miko}}, which is true; her family were always Miko tasked with keeping the Ninetails under control until her mother snapped.

* LovableAlphaBitch: She's aloof and cold, but on the inside, she's a JerkWithAHeartOfGold.

* ShaggyDogStory: The entire Inari arc. We find out that she's been living her life to defend and protect her younger sister Tsukumo, and is only being kept alive for her possible compatibility with the Nine-Tailed Fox inside her mother. It turns out she's ''not'' as compatible as everyone thought, and allowing the spirit inside her body may kill her, but she decides to go through with it to keep the Illuminati from going after Tsukumo in her place. Sure enough, Izumo is almost killed in the process, which leads to her mother taking the Fox into her own body again to keep it from killing Izumo and allowing their family's power to die with her, but not before telling Izumo that she always loved her. The Cram School students save Izumo, but her efforts were ultimately in vain, because Tsukumo was under the protection of True Cross all along, and when Izumo finally goes to visit Tsukumo, the latter doesn't even remember who she is ([[JustifiedTrope justified]], since she was three the last they were together). So for all the trouble Izumo went through, she gained absolutely nothing she was fighting for, has no access to the power she should have been able to inherit and loses what few family ties she thought she had left, leaving her unable to do anything but cry over the unfairness of it all to Shiemi.
* SummonMagic: Her foxes spirit familiars come when she calls them.

* {{Tsundere}}: Type A, right down to the [[GirlishPigtails twintails]] and [[ZettaiRyouiki thighhigh socks]]. As part of her character development, her deredere side comes out more and more often; Generally towards Paku, Shiemi and [[ShipTease Rin]]. She is also a deconstruction of the trope like [[LightNovel/{{Toradora}} Taiga]]. As the above tropes prove, Izumo is not prickly for no reason.

* BladeOnAStick: Can use [[spoiler:Yamantaka's black flames]] to change his khakkhara into a spear that burns the souls of anything it cuts.

** To Izumo, when she's chewing him out for [[spoiler:betraying them.]] Particularly notable since he manages to take the wind from Izumo's sails with only three sentences.

** Chapter 67 has him doing this to [[spoiler: Yukio]], reducing [[spoiler: him]] to a break down after he's gone with only a few well chosen words.

* DoubleReverseQuadrupleAgent: [[spoiler: He's the Shima clan's and Mephisto's spy in the Illuminati, who have him enrolled in Cram School to spy on the True Cross Order and Izumo in particular. He also may have some genuine loyalty to his classmates, as demonstrated by him going out of his way to spare Izumo's familiars, but at the same time, the Illuminati knows this and sent him to back to spy for them in the True Cross Order, which he seems to do. So really, it's anyone's guess.]]

How much that is true is unknown, but Renzo certainly doesn't fit with the usual mould for the Shima family and Myoo Dhra as well. Not to mention appears to on some level ''despise'' his deceased elder brother Takezo.

* DistressBall: Has caught this ''four times'' so far: First during the exwire exam (getting rescued by Rin), second during the Impure King Arc (getting rescued by Shiemi), third during the festival (getting rescued by Renzo), and finally the Inari Arc is all about rescuing her from the Illuminati. That's right, the [[DeadpanSnarker snarky]] {{Tsundere}} IceQueen is the resident DamselInDistress.

Only child and son of the Head Priest of the Myoo Dharani sect, of which got the label of "Cursed Temple" due to being a victim of the Blue Night. Ryuji is trying to acquire the title of Meister in both Aria and Dragoon. Also wants to kill Satan, in this case in the desire to use that to restore the temple he's from. He's a major hot head and struggles often to understand others.

* TheApprentice: Becomes one to [[spoiler: Lightning]] in chapter 71, though his friends claim he's more like the man's manager. Ryuji doesn't disagree, but he's sticking it out anyways at a chance of learning useful stuff.

* BerserkButton: Ryuji cares a lot more for his friends than he cares to admit and is absolutely pissed whenever any of them places undue strain upon themselves [[ThePowerOfFriendship when they have each other to depend upon]]. In the manga, [[FantasticRacism he doesn't care that Rin is Satan's son]], but he's irritated that Rin decided to handle the students' protection on his own. [[spoiler:Ryuji is absolutely ''infuriated'' when he finds out in Chapter 64 that Shima's brothers willingly allowed Shima to join the Illuminati, even if it is for the sake of being True Cross' double agent]].
* {{BFG}}: Later chapters show him packing a ''Bazooka'' and a bandolier holding several reloads of rockets. It's justified, as he's also pursuing a [[TheGunslinger Dragoon Meister]] along with Aria.

* CharacterDevelopment: Starts going through it during the Kyoto arc, drops it temporarily after, picks it up again during the Inari arc, and the recent arc half focuses on how he's finally starting to grow up properly.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The ''Impure King Revival'' StoryArc sends the cram students to Kyoto, Ryuji, Shima, and Konekomaru's hometown, and in specific his family's past is tied directly into the Impure King. He gets another, shorter bout of limelight when [[spoiler: Lightning arrives, resulting in him wanting to become his apprenctice.]]
* DelinquentHair: This plus his FaceOfAThug lead to some people (like Rin) to assuming he is a poor student. [[spoiler: He ditches it in ch72 as a sign of his growing maturity. Keeps the piercings though.]]
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: Ever since he was young, he defined himself as TheLeader, whether it be towards his friends, the Myouda sect, whoever. However, following the Impure King incident and especially TheReveal that [[spoiler: Shima is TheMole]], he's begun to realize that isn't necessarily true anymore, and is having a lot of trouble dealing with that. Lightning's reveal of how one doesn't need a great goal to become an amazing exorcist seems to be helping [[spoiler: as is him taking Ryuji in as his apprentice.]]

* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: In chapter 72 he switches to a different hairstyle. [[spoiler: He gets rid of the yellow streak, cuts his hair closer, and shortens his bangs. The result is of a mature and sensible look, which fits as he's [[CharacterDevelopment working]] towards dealing with his flaws and even shows signs of calming down already.]]

* {{Foil}}: Turns out to be one for ''Yukio''. Both are smart scholarship students who have terrible tempers and are admired by others while not being as good as they seem at first. While Ryuji is currently doing his best to work through his [[FatalFlaw flaws]] and improve himself Yukio [[spoiler: is refusing to admit to be wrong and is heading on a crash course to disaster.]]
* GeniusBruiser: Like most aria using exorcists, he can recite the entire Bible from memory while beating on demons.
* HairTriggerTemper: Has the worst temper of the group and it's his biggest flaw. The calm he shows during certain situations is more of a facade he puts on as his status as TheLeader.

* ItsAllAboutMe: An interesting variation; Ryuji's tendency to take things personal means he acts as if everything is done against him if it effects him. For example, Rin being the Son of Satan and hiding it from him, and [[spoiler: Renzo's choice involving the Illuminati.]]

* JerkassRealization: Has this happen ''three times'' before it fully sticks. First during his debut chapter when Rin saves his life from the Leaper, second during Kyoto arc when a "fight" with Rin puts him in the position of being executed, and then finally during Inari [[spoiler: when Renzo throws it into his face how he's been acting rather spoiled this entire time]]. After the last time, Ryuji has started seriously working on fixing his problems and has started to truly get a handled on his temper.

* MoralityPet: [[spoiler: Ch83 reveals that Lightning wants him to act as one, pulling him back when he goes too far.]]
* MulticoloredHair: His dyed blonde hair is shaped like a mohawk, while both sides of his hair are black. [[spoiler:He eventually shaves the blonde part off.]]

** Takes it even ''[[UpToEleven further]]'' in the next arc. Him having an argument with his father gives Rin a flashback to his foster father's traumatic death. Rin's blow up there gets him locked up and set for an execution, while he's the only one able to truly take on the Impure King. On top of that, Rin's awakened insecurities due to that incident makes it impossible to draw Kurikara to defeat the Impure King for a long time. If ThePowerOfFriendship hadn't come through, not only would have all the exorcists there died (which includes not only Ryuji himself but his friends and family) Kyoto would have suffered under a terrible demon plague that might have spread to the rest of Japan before the Order could defeat or re-seal the Impure King. Damn.

* PlayingWithFire: In chapter 27, he [[spoiler:inherited the red flames of Gouhaen from his father]].

* TheRival: Towards Rin for the right for kicking Satan's ass.

It turns out she's ''not'' as compatible as everyone thought, and allowing the spirit inside her body may kill her, but she decides to go through with it to keep the Illuminati from going after Tsukumo in her place. Sure enough, Izumo is almost killed in the process, which leads to her mother taking the Fox into her own body again to keep it from killing Izumo and allowing their family's power to die with her, but not before telling Izumo that she always loved her. The Cram School students save Izumo, but her efforts were ultimately in vain, because Tsukumo was under the protection of True Cross all along, and when Izumo finally goes to visit Tsukumo, the latter doesn't even remember who she is ([[JustifiedTrope justified]], since she was three the last they were together). So for all the trouble Izumo went through, she gained absolutely nothing she was fighting for, has no access to the power she should have been able to inherit and loses what few family ties she thought she had left, leaving her unable to do anything but cry over the unfairness of it all to Shiemi.]]

* ThemeNaming: His older siblings are named Kinzou ([[VisualNovel/UminekoWhenTheyCry not that one]]) and Juuzou ([[Manga/DetectiveConan not that]] [[TokyoGhoul one, either]]). Later on we find out his father Yaozou and his late eldest brother Takezou fall under this as well. The middle sibling is also named Gozo, and it fully seems to be something all the guys in his family get.

* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: A down played Tomboy to Shiemi's Girly Girl. Not that she's unfeminine, but her rough personality is a stark contrast to Shiemi's gentleness.
