* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: During the Soul Society arc, Kyoraku is one of the few officers not to blindly attack the intruders just because he was ordered to. Instead, when he confronts Sado, Kyoraku questions him about his connection to Rukia and purpose in coming to Seireitei and realizes something doesn't add up. Once Sado has been defeated, Kyoraku makes sure he and other the captured intruders are kept alive and secure, refusing to automatically assume they are responsible for Aizen's "death" without a proper investigation.

* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: Soul Society recently learned that captain-level Soul Reapers, or at least those with a high amount of [[SoulPower spirit energy]] are sent to {{Hell}} when they die. Given Mayuri's position and incredible power, things don't bode well for him.

* AnIcePerson: Hitsugaya weilds Hyorinmaru, which is said to have the most powerful ice-based Zanpakuto in the Soul Society. In Shikai, he is able to control water and ice for both offense and defense. He can create ice dragons and freeze his opponents. His Bankai, Daiguren Hyorinmaru, enhances his powers and gives him a pair of cryokinetic wings. He can use his Bankai to create an ice clone to distract an enemy, but states that he can only use it once.

* KlingonPromotion: A common way of becoming the Captain of Squad 11 is by killing the previous Captain. That's how he became the Squad 11 captain; by killing his predecessor. That's the guy's cloak he wears.

* MagicIsFeminine: Yumichika is the third seat of Squad 11, a Gotei 13 squad that favors brute force and physical combat. In contrast to most of his squad mates who fall more into RatedMForManly, [[TheFightingNarcissist Yumichika is obsessed with beauty]] and [[CombatAestheticist making sure he looks good in battle.]] He is the only confirmed [[FunctionalMagic Kido]] user in a squad that seems to be full of {{Magically Inept Fighter}}s and the only one with a Kido-type Zanpakuto, a fact he prefers to keep a secret. Yumichika is no less of a BloodKnight than his squadmates nor is he [[AgentPeacock any less deadly]].

* LackOfEmpathy: Mayuri sees people not as living beings, but as objects of research. He seems honestly surprised when people get angry at him for his cruelty or reject his offers to be research specimens. He will even get angry if someone tries to impose their moral standards on him, as he did with Uryu, who took issue with the way he treated his daughter. He then goes on to describe the sadistic torture thinly disguised as "experiments" that he performed on countless captured Quincy, right in front of Uryu, a Quincy himself. He even shows Uryu a picture of his dismembered grandfather in a casual manner. Uryu is understandably furious.

* UnskilledButStrong: Kenpachi has no clue on how to truly fight properly, but his raw power is enough to defeat almost any opponent. Until the final arc, his equivalent to the other Captains' Shikai and Bankai was removing his [[PowerLimiter eyepatch]] and [[BoringButPractical holding his sword two-handed and using what little Kendo]] Yamamoto forced him to learn. It is eventually revealed this is a combination of his dislike of formal martial philosophy and the Central 46 preferring to keep him untrained so he's not too powerful should he ever rebel. Even as a child, he was able to defeat the Eleventh Division Kenpachi, who was considered to be the most skilled swordsman and one of the most powerful captains in Soul Society. When he eventually gains his full power, he transforms into a red-skinned raving beast of a fighter that can literally rip the arms off a giant Quincy with his bare teeth.

* BladeOnAStick: Hozukimaru turns to a three sectioned spear in Shikai form.
